Guys, got a question for those who know their refugees. I've been reading some of the recent threads and I'm curious -- it seems like the box codes/dates are more important to pay attention to with ISOMs than with other smokes. Why is that? Is there more fluctuation in quality within the same cigar each year?

Multi-fold answer...

Cuban cigars aren't always necessarily manufactured in the same factory from month to month. At one time, the factory codes were known, now, not so much. Some factories are better than others, although in recent years, the provincial factories have improved greatly.

Vintage is also something worth noting with Cuban cigars since they are sometimes shipped a bit fresh.

Lastly, from a counterfeiting perspective, it's not uncommon for the counterfeiters to use a valid factory, month and year combo, but on the wrong brand. ie: they might stamp a box of marque "A" counterfeits with factory code ABC JAN09. While it's a valid factory, month and year code, it might only be valid for marque "B", as for that month and year, marque "A" might only have been stamped with XYZ JAN09.

Some non-Cuban cigars might have date codes, but factory of production is usually not necessary since a particular vitola in a marque is typically always made in the same place. It's also not as important with the date code since NC's typically use aged tobacco - Cuban cigars, who knows. Hit and miss - sometimes it's aged, sometimes it's not as much.

PS: Please quit calling them ISOMs Lightning isn't going to strike you down for calling them Cuban cigars. Show some respect.

Yeah, right. The reason I used ISOM instead of Cuban was to show disrespect to the country or its cigars. You got me. I bet that really stung them. I didn't use Cuban because I thought it might be discourteous to the owners of a forum to do so unless they had specifically invited a discussion of Cuban cigars. I realize buying and selling are different than discussing them, but whatever. Kind of like uttering "MacBeth" inside the theatre.

But, TG, other than that, your info was very helpful. Thanks.

Not so much that you would notice though there is a possible box pass under development here:

LOL. You posted in a 5 page long thread that is blatantly a discussion about Cuban cigars, where they are mentioned many times by name and origin, but yet didn't call them Cuban as not to be discourteous to the owners of this site? Laughable. By your own explanation, you simply posting in this thread would be discourteous.

Anyway, it's ridiculously silly term which has long since outlived it's usefulness. Don't take it too hard, most people use the term when starting out.

BTW - wanted to add that when I was speaking of the first three letters of the box codes and how sometimes the same cigars are made at different factories, a change of codes from month to month does not necessarily indicate a change in factories. It's not uncommon now, with the current coding system, for a single factory to get a new code each month, even if they are still producing the same cigar they were last month. There is also speculation that multiple factory codes can be issued to the same factory for the same month for different cigar marques/ vitolas.

Yeah, it's kludgey, no one has figured the new system out yet.

I aint never got to smoke no Cuban Ceegars. Are they really that much better than regular ceegars?

I would buy some if I knew how. Would someone post the names of some of the companies where these can be bought? Also, if I were to buy some, how would they be shipped to me? Could someone explain to me the shipping methods of the companies?

Thanks. Don't worry -- I wasn't taking the fact that you corrected my terminology too hard, I just didn't like the dismissive and condescending directive to "show some respect." And, Adam, it is uncool to call my rationale for how I worded my post "laughable." What is the point? If others on the thread want to use "Cuban" and I wasn't sure if that was acceptable, who cares? I appreciate you sharing the info -- it is helpful -- but going out of your way to insult just isn't cool IMO.

I wasn't trying to insult you, it seems that maybe you didn't realize that referring to a Country and Peoples by such terms as "ISOM" / "Island South of Miami" can be considered disrespectful and possibly even insulting & derogatory by definition in some of their eyes. Unfortunately, a common oversight since the term is tossed around so loosely without thought. That's what I was referring to.

Thanks for clarifying. And you are right that if the Cuban people take offense at that term, that is news to me. I used the term to refer to the cigars from Cuba, not the country or people. Based on what I have seen, the phrase's etimology seems to stem from the desire of some not to specifically reference cigars that are illegal. If it is a derogatory term that some use outside the cigar context to refer to Cuba, I did not know that.

Like many things, some whom I know do take offense to the term, some whom I know don't. *shrug*

At this point, I think the government is quite aware of what ISOM often refers to. I'm sure it worked for awhile though.

OK, I'm a noob when it comes to CC's, had a couple of cohibas and they were incredible.
I'm seriously interested in a couple of box splits with a seasoned vet, preferably Cohiba Eslpenditos or Robusto and PSD4 or you choose one of your favorites. I'm patient so I don't have a problem aging them a couple years.

PM me please!!

I have been doing a ton of research on cubans and specifically fake bands. It's really depressing how rampant the situation is. There is almost no definitive example of anything anymore. I'm bummed to say the least. Should I spend the extra money and try to find some at an LCDH if I'm ever in the area or have someone pick them up for me? I have even heard that some LCDH's sell fakes, hearsay but my quest for more information has left me with too many questions and certainly unsure if I should buy any cubans.

Rant over.

Gracias, I probably shouldn't have ranted so hard but I was frustrated with doing research for so long and not getting anywhere. I think I might have gotten burned yesterday but can't prove it for sure which is annoying.

Know your source.....find a vendor you can trust, and stick with them.

Buying Cubans private party (I.e OLH) is risky business. Again, know your source. If you don't, I would ask plenty of questions at the very least before pulling the trigger.

You're almost better off mooching for CCs than buying private party. That way at least you wouldnt be out of pocket any money if you ended up with fakes.

I'd go with the find a good vendor route first though. Mooching will always be there when you need it.

If the box arrived unopened and with the hologram sticker, try running the code number through habanos.com. If it all corelates, your good, if not, you still may be good.

Post or emial me photos of the cigars in the box, a close-up of the head and foot, the box closed and the bottom of the box.

I will give you an honest OPINION ASAP.

Also, start with minimmum order. Do test runs. Don't place a big order until you are comfortable.

I have never heard of a Legit LCDH selling fake Cuban Cigars. I think that they would lose their franchise if they were caught do this. I don't think they would risk it. The closest that I've heard is one LCDH (I won’t list specifics) have misrepresented cigars as far as age and/or special releases. But they are still legit Cuban Smokes. Just not exactly what they claim they are.
