We rented one during August 2020 and went to way northern California for a week. (It was actually illegal for them to rent it to us due to Covid lockdowns.)

92, sunny... hot and humid.

75 degrees in my recliner.

All my chores for the day are done. Walked the dog, went to the gym, got a few groceries at the commissary and got a haircut while I was on the base.

It's 89 going to 104 here today and that feels like a pretty nice change from the 30+ days of 110-117 we just went through.

20 mile bike ride with wife and boy. Time for a new bike. I bought mine in 1997 for $300. Fixed a few things over the years but at this point I don't think any of the components are salvageable. Bearings are all crunchy and coasting feels like light braking. Hubs and crank barrel were hot at the end and they were freshly greased in the spring. I got every bit of life out of that bike. Had 12k miles on the odometer before that broke sometime around 05-06 when I was commuting with it.

Brother in law is service manager at local trek store so I stopped to bother him on the sales floor. They have two bikes under $1k that would work for me. Gotta sell my beater first, then I'll go pick up a new bike.

Cool thing happened while we were riding back from Gary we stopped in downtown Griffith where there's a huge train intersection and some old train cars - 2 caboose and a Pullman troop carrier along with an old switch tower and train depot. An older guy came up and asked if we'd ever been inside. Nope. Been stopping there for the train loving boy since he was in a bike carrier. He opened all the cars and the buildings and gave us a tour. It was so cool to see, I love old stuff like that. We got to sit up in the top cupola of the caboose and watch a couple trains go by. They have a livestream camera on the tower too https://www.youtube.com/live/YMGLorDhw0w?feature=share

Had a great day. Tomorrow I've gotta help dig in a crawlspace all day. At night taking boy to the fair for demolition derby.

1k for a Trek you gotta pedal?

F that... for just a shade under $1200 I got a Lectric E-bike with cargo baskets and the upgraded battery. I pedal if and when I want to (with pedal assist)... and turn the throttle when I don't. Pedal assist 1-5 and at 3 I am pedaling lightly and doing 16-17 mph.

danm I have just the bike for you. I'm considering selling my Masi Gran Criterium from 1982 which is in mint condition and has less than 1000 miles on it. Only used it to complete the Tour de Tucson and the Arizona Challenge back in the day.

The frame set was hand made in Italy (the newer ones are machine made in California) and it has the best Capagnolo components. I dropped by a bike shop to ask their advice and said I thought about $1500 would be a good price. The guys told me that these are now collectors items and worth much more.

Went on Ebay and saw a couple going for $2250 - $2900. How about a bike that appreciates instead of depreciates?

Trek bikes... that brings back memories. Back when I was in engineering school in Madison, WI in the early 90's we (the metallurgy/material science) students and professors took a field trip to the Trek assembly plant in Waterloo, WI. It's about 30-45 minute bus ride from Madison.

They would welcome the students in a couple times a year for a tour of the place. They were just still kind of a small bike business at that time (relatively speaking). They've grown quite a bit over the years and have expanded into many other biking areas since then.

At the time I visited, the steel frames were welded by a third party. The aluminum frames (depending on the model) were welded in house or epoxied together in house. The carbon fiber bikes were all epoxied together - carbon fiber tubes for the main triangle and cast aluminum parts and stuff for the front triangle. I think the rear triangle was still welded steel and epoxied to the seat tube and the bottom bracket. The forks were still steel on all of the frames

When we left after the tour, they sent us home with 3 or 4 rejected frames of each assembly method (steel welding, aluminum welded, aluminum glued, carbon fiber glued), something like 12-15 bike frames in total. Our job as students was to section the frame, analyze the joining methods and recommend improvements. Then write up a lab report on our findings. It was a fun analysis. They give us free frames and we do some analysis on them for free. We both win.

Transparency: Not all of the bikes were sectioned and cut into pieces. We had to do real world ride tests with each of the frames so a few (cough) students got a free Trek bike after we completed the analysis and reports.

Have a 21 speed 1995 Mongoose. The good ones. Not the pos they turned into once Walmart bought the name.

It is either time for a big investment- most everything would need to be replaced, or time to do the electric bike thing.

Neither are really in the budget at this point.

It's hard to find a good bike for under a grand. Road bike or a fatty. I have to admit those electric bikes seem pretty cool. You can pedal if you want or cruise at 20 something mph for 80 miles on some of them. Do any of you have one?

Almost on the daily... mailbox is almost a mile away. If I walked to it in this heat I would melt. Hell, if I pedal to it I sweat a lot. All electric, back and forth. 20 mph in the heat, but at least there's a breeze. fog

Waz up Bros?

Headed for Cape Cod for four days on Thursday. It was 104F with 80-90% RH Thursday. Hope and pray to meet up with Frank around Boston or on the Cape. Can't wait to get reprieve from Orlando's heat and humidity. [-o<

Wife and I are nursing colds for the next 2-3 days. Someone at her office is Covid+ so she took a couple tests over the last few days to rule that out. Thankfully, negative so our trip is a go!

Just picked up some bagels hot out of thhe shop's oven- too hot to even eat in the car on the way home.

Going to work on getting our home library/office de-cluttered and organized (again). Not much else planned for this weekend except perhaps swimming laps, watching UFC and NFL, and maybe jumping on to the v-herf.

Hope everyone is doing well!

I've had a sinus infection for a few days, myself, Robert. Wife told me "maybe you got covid"? I lol'ed. We'll never friggin' know because I will never test for it again.

Flushed sinuses with saline for a few days and I am already back to 90%. Well enough that I ran yesterday and did some exercise today.

Spent $45 to go to the fair for demolition derby. Again. Went to ticket booth 20 minutes after tickets went on sale. Sold out. Again.

$100 spent trying to see demo derby and all I get is a crying kid. I don't think I'm going to even try the next county fair in 2 weeks. Fvck demolition derby I'm cutting losses and not trying again.

I would say in order to score tickets you have to be at the ticket booth 30 to 60 minutes prior to tickets going on sale. Think

Evening All! Home form the match in Orangeburg, SC I came in third, pretty good since the top shooter is the South Carolina ARA Champion. To take up the time between shooting our four ARA targets they had a grouping shoot, the smallest group aggregate of three five shot groups, the winner got each shooter's entrance money, I shot the smallest groups, a little cash is better than fame.

Yeah, you think y'all got it bad? It's hot as a half-screwed fox in a forest fire and my AC fan doesn't want to switch from low speed to any other speed.

Trane is the brand. Called a couple places. One guy asked for a picture of the plate with the serial and model numbers... got back to me and told me it is under warranty until 2028, and it's a good thing because it has a variable speed fan... and they're $1500-$2000. Still gonna cost me around $500 for labor.

The other place was servicing the AC under the old owner and told me it was not under warranty. Huh? The house is 5 years old. I'm gonna go with the guy doing the services under warranty, tyvm.

Ain't nothing getting done until Monday at the earliest... and that's if he can find a motor for it locally. Brick wall

It's 78 inside. Never really got warmer than 80 inside yesterday. If that holds, I'll be ayite... got a portable in the bedroom, but it's louder than I remember. d'oh!

If it helps you out, current temp here is 66. High to be 72.

Best news for you southern folks, is the story is going to start turning bad up here and continue downhill for 6 months. Time is on your side.
