Who have seemingly gutted their service departments?

One of our fleet vehicles is a Ford Transit, really like them a lot more than our Ram Promasters….anyways a crackhead cut the fuel fill line, so we had to have it towed to the dealership. This was supposed to be an advantage over our older bigger trucks that required a fleet maintenance shop.

Anyways, 2 weeks to even LOOK AT IT. They have 20 bays, and 4 mechanics. I have a few friends that left dealerships because they screwed mechanics on pay (charging almost double of a traditional mechanic shop and not paying the mechanics billable hours per job).

Is this the only reason? My ex wife worked at a huge chain (Lithia) when the manufacturers started a program to rate dealerships on their service in exchange for better buying pricing. She was in early in those call centers. I cannot fathom that’s still in place in the same fashion.

Any experts out there?

That’s a bit strange. Most “garages” allocate at least 2 bays per mechanic. That way if they have a car in one bay that’s awaiting parts or something then they can work on another one and stay billable. But, like anything else if people can make more sucking on the sugar teet than they can working guess what many will do.

The Honda dealership my mother worked at for 20 years has had to reduce its service/repair department by closed to 2/3 due to inability to find mechanics and service techs. It's an industry wide problem right now.

Generation Z and Millennials don’t want real jobs. They want to be social influencers.

Millions of boomers and Gen X retired during Covid-19 lockdowns.

Think

I have a friend that just started last week with Ferman. Started out at 45 an hour. So far, he likes it. He's an awesome mechanic off the bat now he gets the certifications. Said the hardest part of the job is learning the software.
