I wasn't going to post this, but I've learned more from this forum than I expected. Thought I would share something that has helped me a lot.

After a smoking session, I take about a 1/3 teaspoon of regular baking soda in my mouth, add some water and rinse it around for 2 or 3 minutes and then rinse with water.

Neutralizes a good bit of the cigar effects on my tongue. Been doing this for years.

About 6 months ago, after the baking soda rinse added a salt rinse after the baking soda, about 1/6 teaspoon salt and water - again for two or three minutes.

Works very well for me.

YMMV.

I find that citrus based mouth wash works way better then mint. Also a tongue scraper is good to use every couple days. You'd be shocked at how much crap comes off your tongue. I may have to try the baking soda.

Do I have this correct? You smoke a cigar, then you choke yourself with baking soda to get the taste out of your mouth?

Ok...........if you say so.........

I'm thinking more of doing it once at the end of the day. I get more action when my breath doesn't stink of cigar. Whistle

Actually, the process "refreshes" my mouth to a more natural state, or at least seems to do so.

If you don't realize that smoking makes changes to your tongue and throat, you are not paying attention.

FWIW, I started this after having throat irritation from smoking cigars. If I smoke too much, it can happen.

Went to my GP, who took one look and referred me to a throat cancer specialist.

Thankfully, I did not have cancer.

But, I did have an irritated tongue and mouth.

This is one way of reducing the level of irritation and keeping a more natural palette.

I also cut back how much I smoke.

You want to ignore the potential for oral cancer and laugh at it?

Go right ahead.

I cannot help but wonder how much you guys will laugh when you have been pushing more than you should for 30 years or more.

Heh, Heh. Let me tell you, when you get referred to a throat cancer specialist it changes your perspective.

You find very little humor or sarcasm in that situation.

YMMV

That's more like it.

My wife tells me I stink as well if I've smoked too many cigars. In fact she said that to me last night. Right before we celebrated my birthday, again.

For the last year I've had a diminished sense of taste. Probably a mix of all the nicorette I chew as well as smoking more cigars. Brushing/scraping the hell out of my tongue has helped, but I think I'll try this as well. It also helps for the morning after not to have such a foul mouth.

Some of you may laugh, but it pissed me off when I smoked a Cohiba Sublime last summer and barely tasted it...that was the cue to figure out what the heck was happening. Luckily my dentist said I have no problems going on but recommended the warm salt rinsing as well to clear off the back of the tongue. Now I'll try the baking soda to see if it helps.

About ten years back I had a benign growth removed from inside my nose. Ever since then I've had a heightened sense of smell and taste (both senses are linked in case you didn't know) I can very easily pick out notes in a cigar especially if I retrohale. I always smell things way before anyone else. I brush 2 to 3 times a day and am constantly flossing because of it.

I had my wife pick up an extra box of baking soda when you first told me about this but hadn't tried it yet. However, it's good that you posted your "technique" up, it sounds like it may help someone.

If you ever have a sore throat pour some peroxide into a glass of warm water and add a teaspoon of salt and gargle. Works like a charm. Tastes awful but it really works.

How does your throat get irritated smoking a cigar? Didn't think smoke went down there. Guess I'll pay more attention next time I burn one...

At the back of your mouth, where I believe your tonsils are located is what I am talking about.

"throat" might not be the correct word, but I am not sure what else to call it.

Past what I consider roof of my mouth to be, and prior to the beginning of esophagus.

Same area inflamed as when you get "a sore throat"

Exactly the same area.

heh, heh.
After Micheal Douglas announced that he contracted oral cancer from performing cunnilingus, DR Sonje Gupta went on one of the late night shows and stated that "more white males over the age of 40 have oral cancer from performing oral sex (HPV) than contract cancer from smoking and drinking.

If you are gonna get oral cancer, that is the way to go, IMO

Hey Ken;

After smoking two seegars tonight, I tried the baking soda rinse and it seemed to help me lessen the aftertaste. I didn't do the salt rinse, I'll try again next time but just wanted to let you know that it seemed to work for me. Mahalos for the tip.

Glad it seems to be working for you.

Anything that helps smoke more cigars has gotta be good!

I agree and rinse my mouth with it. It's also great for healing wounds. I've been banged up more than a few times in my life and doctors are always impressed with how fast I heal abrasions and lacerations. The key is the hydrogen peroxide. Pour that stuff on any open wound until it stops bubbling every time you wash and you will heal much faster than without. Good stuff. I have a friend who has been drinking a half a shot of hydrogen peroxide every morning for several years now and he swears it keeps all ailments away. Not sure about this but it's great for wound healing.
