Dude, that's not a real word...but yeah.

If we're fishing 200-300 feet... better be some heavy ass plactics. I've got rock cod rigs, but I need to get some more 8 oz+ weights. I have one 8 ounce, and all 4, 3, and 2 after that.

I've never fished for rock fish with anything other than cut/live squid or live sardines.
254. Author: delta1Date: Fri, 5/5/2017, 6:58PM EST
The soft plastic jigs are pushed through a long shank hook with a lead plug head on it. The lead plugs weigh from 8oz to 12oz, so they'll get to the bottom quickly. I'll bring some extra 12 and 16 oz torpedo lead weights also. Should I bring a couple of extra pole/reel rigs for Ant, so he can avoid baggage claim, and anyone else?
255. Author: MACSDate: Fri, 5/5/2017, 7:00PM EST
I'm going to bring all 4 of my ocean rods/reels. We'll swing by and snatch you up on the way through.

Looking forward to it...this is gonna be fun...

A 16 oz sinker is standard for beginners out there when fishing with the farallon rig... 10-12 works well enough though...

I usually use an 8 oz jig head if I'm doing soft plastics, but the plastic itself slows the drop, so i usually only fish it in smooth conditions or in the shallows...

For jigs, I usually go for 8-10 oz, sometimes lighter...

Leader i usually opt for 40-50lb mono, or fluoro if I've got the extra money to spend...

Main line is either 40 or 50 lb braid...
258. Author: MACSDate: Fri, 5/5/2017, 7:23PM EST
30/50/50/65 braid on mine. I have 25/30/40/50 fluoro that I'll use if the fish are line shy. Rock fish are NOT line shy.

I'll tie the rock cod rig right to the braid. What kind of bait do they provide? Cut fish, cut squid, sardines...?
259. Author: opelmanta1900Date: Fri, 5/5/2017, 9:32PM EST
probably cut squid but maybe sardines... I always buy a couple of things myself,,, I'm picky about bait...

the use of fluoro over mono for me is less about visibility and more about stretch... 6 feet of mono turns into 10 by the end of the day...

We could fire up my smoker on the 19th and bring 7-8 pounds of pulled pork with us. You know... just in case the fish ain't biting and stuff.

You could prolly twist my arm into assisting.

I'm wondering if I should mail my cigars. Never tried bringing CC's in my carry on. On the other hand, I could check a bag and bring a bottle of Havana Club Anjeo 7 Anos.
263. Author: MACSDate: Fri, 5/5/2017, 10:55PM EST
You can bring them. I always do.

The amount of boxes in my cabinet will make you sad. I've been smoking them and not replenishing. Spending more on fishing and much less on smoking. I also don't smoke as much as I used to.

Just take the cigars as carry-ons. TSA doesn't care about Cuban cigars or any cigars for that matter.

I would not send cigars in checked luggage if you can avoid it.

Sure wish you could make the trip.

Agree with Anthony, would've been nice to have met you...

Everyone has reserved their spot, right? The boat's about to be full...

Some interesting things going on with the wind... the whole area is going to get hit with 30 mph wind this Sunday... really really hoping that's the last we see of the crazy stuff...

The (wildly inaccurate) extended forecast is saying 10 to 20 mph wind for our day... 10 is doable, 20 is not... it seems like the small craft advisory comes out when there's a sustained wind of 15mph or so... i really don't know the criteria for when they issue that, but from experience if the sca is issued, the charters don't go...

This wouldn't be a problem if you guys had planned this on a day Prop could go... Mellow
275. Author: MACSDate: Tue, 5/9/2017, 4:06PM EST
Well... we got a house for 2 nights, that is already paid for. I think we'll be fine. The weather will cooperate.

Worst case... we smoke and drink for 2 days.
276. Author: elRopoDate: Tue, 5/9/2017, 4:52PM EST
Small Craft Warnings are generally issued for sustained winds of 22 to 33 knots and seas 10 ft. or greater.

Problem is there's no ironclad definition of "small craft". According to the C.G. it means "ships less than ships" so its kinda up to you to decide.

That being said, I won't go if its blowing more than 15. Tooooo bumpy for my old bones.

I've been through much worse. I'm sure Shawn has as well. Nothing like watching a bunch of seapups praying to Davy Jones.

Indeed I have. 30 foot swells, cracked sonar dome... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Ruby_(1988)

Then again in 1990 with typhoon Yancy. Ruby was worse.

Looks like we'll have a full house. Only 5 spots left on the Endeavor for that day.

Don't recall what hurricane, but it was in 1984. Found out what a rubber duck in a bath tub felt like. 2/3rds of the crew were sick in bed. I was walking around the decks smoking cigars.

The Endeavor has been limiting out on rock fish... I'm officially fired UP for this. Woot
282. Author: opelmanta1900Date: Wed, 5/10/2017, 12:05PM EST
Oh, if we don't get rock cod limits, it's because we didn't get to go fishing...

I don't wanna say this trip is a sure thing, but last time I went out on the 12 hour i had 45 lbs of filets... just filets... i think only 2 charter boats go to this spot and only once or twice per week... and the wind has kept them away most of this year...

The fishery out there is so rich, you can expect to bring up a good size fish on ever single drop... that's not an exaggeration....

The reds start at 6 pounds out there... the coppers are about the same... salmon grouper get up to ridiculous sizes out there... we should be able to get a nice canary each...

The only possible issue could be the ling cod... I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what this wind will do to them... but if they're biting, brad will get us on them...
283. Author: opelmanta1900Date: Wed, 5/10/2017, 12:52PM EST
12/62, 20/64, 19/64, 22/62, 18/62, 20/61, 17/64, 16/66, 16/72...

Those are the daily projected wind speeds in mph/daily high temp from now until the Friday before we get there... by the grace of God it looks like the temps will be up and wind should be manageable...

If you go to the Facebook page for endeavor Sportfishing morro bay you can see the pics of the reds they've been bringing in...

Relax, brotherman... we're going. We're gonna have a great day, regardless... and if we catch lotsa fish, GREAT!
290. Author: opelmanta1900Date: Thu, 5/11/2017, 10:44PM EST
no can do... I'm wired to be all crazy analytical about fishing trips... been that way since I started fishing at 12... I've got seperate tackle boxes I bring for 4 mph wind vs. 10, and another for 15...

not saying it's a good thing, I've just given up trying to change it...
291. Author: opelmanta1900Date: Thu, 5/11/2017, 10:48PM EST
endeavor had no issue getting rock cod limits today... ling cod numbers weren't great, but that's to be expected for a private charter...
292. Author: AbrignacDate: Fri, 5/12/2017, 12:57PM EST
You're over thinking this Joel.

I just booked my spot on the Endeavor for a 12 hour Cape San Martin trip on Sunday, May 21, 2017. Good thing I did, since there are now only 3 spots left. If you haven't reserved a spot yet, do so NOW!!!!

Yeah... he obviously wasn't paying attention. We're ALL booked now. I just got the e-mail with the key code for the house, and for the internet password and such. No smoking in the house... or anywhere on the premises. Meh... we can smoke 2 days worth while we're fishing.

My CC has been charged the full amount for the house already. It's game on fellas.

as for smoking cigars...I'm sure we can find a place outside the house, nearby, where we can have some beverages and cigars...just have to be discreet... less than one week away...

We'll figure something out. There's bound to be a public place nearby where we can smoke. I wouldn't want them to access some sort of BS cleaning fee.
