I am currently finishing off a HOJA Robusto. It is a rich, sweet cigar. I was a little dissapointed at the end as it got a little rough, but for 17.95 I am definetly buying a box. I would compare it to a CAO Black Label. Don't let the price fool you. You can get some great gars for pennys here.

Just me talkin.............Leon

Hey guys hope you don't mind a question from a rookie1
Is this Hoja related to the Hoja Yellow band from Costa Rica? Also I've never tried a CAO so would you call the Hoja a mild smoke, like a Pleiades or what?
Thanks all

I just smoked one last week, a friend gave me one. IMHO it's a nice smoke, medium strength with a touch of sweetness, but not overly so. For the money, it's a very good buy. I usually smoke smaller 'gars in the winter..so I'm buying!

As far as comparisons, kinda like the Hoya de Monterray, but I'm not good at comparisons. I would suggest buying as box and trying them yourself!

By the way, on a scale of 1-10, 1 being mild, Pleiades is about a 2. It's one of my favorite mild cigars, great for the front nine on Sat. morning!

I don't know about you...but I have never been able to find a "hoja de nic."...the original great cigar out of nic, and the one worth buying is spelled "joya de nic."
try to find "hoja de nic", rated on CA or anywhere else and you won't find them. remember you get what you pay for, are these a knock off or what ?
but maybe this is a gold mine, if you buy some let me know how they smoke. good luck, and this is just MHO

Joya de Nicaragua has been around a long time and is experiencing a rebirth with the new Antaño 1970.
I have tried the Gran Consul and think it might be a great one in 6 months. X likes 'em, too.

Hoja de Nicaragua is an unknown quantity by me, but just in case they turn out to be good, I bid on 2 boxes. For that price you can forget about them for a year. They will be either good or good for mooches.

I smoked a box of these over the past year, and they are a pretty good smoke. Very mild, for 18 bucks it's definitely worth it. They burned evenly, and were slighty sweet. I'd recomend them.

Granpa, here's SMOKE's 97/98 winter review of the robusto

HOJA DE NICARAGUA Consul
Apparently, you can judge a book by its cover, at least in the case of the Hoja De Nicaragua. Made entirely of Cuban-seeded Nicaraguan tobacco, the Hoja De Nicaragua scored top points for aesthetics, and its construction was also at the top of the class. Even after the match was struck, the Hoja kept its perfect game intact with a smooth, complex, mild flavor, along with a wonderful aroma and satisfying aftertaste making for a great smoke. These might be the most pleasant surprise of the tasting, especially due to their low price of under $3.50 a stick. Check 'em out! Recommended.

Yes, definitely to each his own...my palate says "dog rocket" but then again who knows how these were handled or stored at one time or another; I've seen well known smokes end up as dog rockets as well due to poor storage or handling. I just know that I won't allow another Hoja de Nic in my 'dor. Not worth the second effort...IMFHO of course.
