Surprise or no surprise?

I need some advice, I want to think through both sides of this...

The wife is turning 40 soon and I am planning on buying her a very nice necklace that has the birthstones of both of our girls. My wife has very little jewelery because she is pretty picky about it and would rather treasure the few thing she has than get a bunch of stuff she doesn't love.

I don't know if I should buy her what i think she will like (for some reason she generally thinks I have good taste) and surprise her or should I show her the two options I am considering and let her choose (one is custom so she could even have input)?

I recognize that one of the reasons she treasures some of her current jewelery is because someone important to her chose it for her (surprise option), but at the same time I don't want to get her something she won't love (no surprise option).

Pitch me either way!

I say surprise her. If it contains you're children's birthstones Its very unlikely she won't like it.

Surprise her.

But, do your homework first. Look around at her personal items like purse, watch, key ring and other type items.

Are they plain or gaudy?

Are they small or large?

Vibrant or dull?

You’re gonna have to think out the box a little.

Go to a jewelry store. Talk to a FEMALE sales person. Explain what you’ve learned your wife likes. Ask her to recommend 2 or more items.

Then go to another one…..

Then another

Using their suggestions see who he is first.

Your taste is usually correct.
Sentiment is important to her.
The kids are always with her around her neck and close to her heart figuratively and literally.

Slam dunk…. Surprise.

If she doesn’t like it, blame the guys on CigarBid.

Yep, surprise is surprisingly the choice. We all like to think we have good taste.

I've gone this route a coupla times, and I sucked at it...my supposedly well thought out "surprises" turned out to be expensive dust collectors in the "too expensive" box, a euphemism for "I won't be caught dead wearing that" stuff...

If you're buying for my wife, or your wife is anything like mine, take her with you and let her pick.

You are not alone. Someplace there is a custom made green fire opal surrounded by emeralds in a gold setting that might as well be a Cracker Jack prize.

Gene, Delta, you may have the last laugh, but I went the surprise route...it is being made custom so I may not have it for her actual birthday, but shortly thereafter.

Definitely made the right choice. Surprises are great.

Need to do a better job proofreading. I don’t what the hell “ Using their suggestions see who he is first.” was supposed to mean.

She loved it.

Well, she said she loved it, but I think she was being honest.

No jewelry.

Take her on a classy riverboat cruise...
Oregon has several...Europe has a lot...
Then perform every night till she's spent...
I think she would prefer it.

Great!

I'm happy to be wrong figuring out what women actually want is a perpetual struggle for all men. Worse, if any rule is actually discovered, the rule immediately changes. Brick wall
