Do You Log Every Cigar That You Smoke?

Was thinking about this topic a couple days ago...

I have recorded every cigar that I have smoked since I began posting on the forum in 2017.

If you don't do that, why? If you never post what you are smoking, why?

Why? Well I mainly smoke ceegars for enjoyment , not going to make a project out of something I enjoy. Another reason I DGAF about what I smoked over the years .😉

I record most of em on here. Maybe 99 percent of them. Only time I write something down is if I loved it. Then I usually find out they’re discontinued. Or I’ll buy some of what I liked.

I've been listing just about everything I smoke. Once in a while I may miss one or forget one.

I do try to log as many as I can, but sometimes I get busy or go on the road and don't drop in. When I do drop in, I will post the cigars that I've smoked the previous day or two...

I don't keep a daily written record of each cigar I smoke, and much like what I ate for yesterday's lunch, the current state of my memory makes it impossible to recall the cigars I've smoked, so if I've not come in for awhile, those cigars enjoyed during my absence are like the smoke they became...gone with the wind...

I'm not sure how Clint does it, but his occasional lists of 30+ cigars in the "What'cha Smok'in Azzhats !!!" thread is impressive...

Jake,

As far as record keeping goes, I keep track of how many, of each blend, that I have. If I like it, I'll save the band off of the last one to remind myself to buy it again.

I don't write down tasting notes, or any notes for that matter.

Delta,

I had a lot of those long lists over the past couple yrs. We didn't have internet at the house for about a yr and a half...

What I did was write the size of the cigar on the back of the band and then put it in a sandwich bag. I would log them all at once when I was at place that had internet.

When I initially saw the title it was about keeping a personal log or spreadsheet about cigars. I know there are people who do that, but at that point it seems more a chore than a pastime. So it’s not something I’d do. Besides my tastes are fairly simple so I don’t have trouble remembering what I like. I like a few different sizes depending on how long I want a smoke to last. For example if I’m fishing I want a Presidente or larger. That way it lasts a few hours. Then if I just want to sit, have a smoke and a drink a corona or similar is perfect. As far as blends, for non-CC’s Fuentes and Padrons fit the bill. There are enough blends between to two brands to keep me satisfied. For CC’s I like Monte’s, H. Upmanm’s, Bolivars and Partagas.

Since I’ve never been interested in sampling the maze of boutique and one-off’s it not hard to keep track of what I like.

I write pretty much every cigar I smoke in the Whatchasmokin thread. We´re counting! I will not live to see 1,000,000 unless a whole bunch of people join the forum. But I do hope to see 100,000.

But other than that, I don't write them down or log them. Stuff I like and want to buy usually stays in my mind. I will write those down in a list when I can remember to do it. But I never read the list. That's mainly because I usually do not set out to buy cigars. I just see a sale and buy because I have weak moral fiber and buying stuff helps fill the empty void inside me.

I probably have one of the worst cases of OCD here on the Forums. I have a spreadsheet of all the cigars bought and given to me. Some of the info includes manufacturer, frontmark / cigar name, country of origin, wrapper color, wrapper, binder, filler, strength, shape and size. Also where I bought or who I got the cigar from, date received, cost (if any), date smoked and a couple cells for miscellaneous info. AND THEN I have a separate spreadsheet for what i smoked and when. So yah, I put the date of when I smoked into two spreadsheets plus posting here and on the brotherly site. But, I’mma sick franker so don’t see it as “work” nor does it take any pleasure away from me. In fact, it bothers me more when I don’t do all of the above.

I’ve been anal / OCD about a lot of other things but because I’mma Gemini, there are times when I don’t give a rat’s azz about things and just let things go into literal anarchy. Not sure how my wife puts up with me. Think

I made notes early on until I figured out what I liked.

Never referenced that data and still don't see a need for it so I no longer preserve it. Sometimes if I find a cigar to be exceptional, I'll post in the whatchu smoking thread to remember it but again, I've never gone back to reference it.

I do have a few palama cigars in my humidor with his extra band and date on them

YES! To help recall over the years what I got out of the 1000's of different blends I have burned. Hate going to a shop and not being able to recall if I have burned a blend or not, and then dropping $12 on a hardly average stick. And also because I have way to much time on my hands! This is just a small example of the simple NOTEPAD file I keep in alphabetical order.....

I smoke about 700/year. Prolly log about 30% on this site when I think about it. Started keeping notes when I got into "totalmente a mano" about 25 years ago but pretty quickly learned what I liked so don't keep notes.

#11 Damn Conan. I thought I was a little OCD for just keeping count of every cigar that I have.

I prolly shoulda have came up with a better title, bc I was trying to find out why guys don't post what they're smoking to the "Whatcha Smokin" thread.

That thread has helped me the most over the years...

I used to keep a running list on a spreadsheet of what I bought, the name of the cigar and stuff, where I bought it, when I bought it, any date stamp that might be available, when I smoked and so on.... After a bunch of years I gave up and found my sweet spot of blends, manufacturers and stuff.

I know what I like so that's good enough for me. I don't know my current inventory for each cigar nor do I really care. I know I have some older than my teen age kids, older than a reliable pair of jeans and an old Tee shirt. Does that make them better than other stuff right off the truck? (shrug). I've had some that were better when young and I've had some that were better after sitting for a while.

Some of what I have may be past their "sweet point" and over aged. Some may not have hit the sweet point so just tuck them away and revisit them later. It's too much info and too much trouble to track each one for me. If it works for me, I'll buy some more. If not, I'll give it another try later. If it doesn't work, I'll put it on the list of don't buy again until I hear otherwise.

I don’t log every single cigar but I log each each 5 pack , 10 pack or box. In the event I get a single stick ordered or maybe I pick up single sticks at brick and mortar when I go into town I will record them in my journal that I recently started keeping. The reason I don’t record every cigar is that I find that much journaling tedious for my enjoyment. The reason I record them at all is because I tend to forget the cigars I’ve smoked and I end up ordering some and remember that I didn’t like it when I torch it. It was the Rocky Patel Sun Grown that drove me to journaling my cigars. No offense to the guys who enjoy that cigar but I found it to be in its own separate category of foul tasting nastiness. When I get tempted to bid on the flavored cigars I can look in my journal to see that every flavored cigar / cigarillo that I’ve ever smoked I’ve got a “not recommended, do not repurchase “ comment at the bottom. That is just to help me save my money for the truly wonderful cigars such as Rocky Patel Vintage, Aging Room Quattro, Montecristo Media Noche, San Cristobal Elagancia, many of AJ Fernandez cigars which are terrific. I like to write down what the wrapper, binder, filler consists of so I can better know which cigars to try that I’ve never tasted but think I might enjoy based on the tobacco blend. Doing this much journaling adds to the hobby part of cigar smoking and increases my overall enjoyment without making me feel bogged down with having to write an entry after every stick I burn.
Excellent topic you have started here. Do you log every last cigar you smoke?

I quite like La Aroma De Cuba brand and I have tried a few on your list but not all. I recently got some in the mail that I’ve never tried and I’m looking forward to the day when they are in my smoke box. Maybe mid-Spring.
