Before any of you azzhats say wrong forum the op has nothing to do with politics. Can’t say what direction it will take though.

So this morning I’m perched on the throne at a truck stop in Weatherford, TX. Not to digress, but I wonder how many of the world’s problems can be solved by ideas manifested in those hallowed stalls.

While taking care of business the thought of open carry came to mind so I pondered the concept. Not just the idea of open carrying a firearm, but also open carrying bladed weapons.

Throughout my coast to coast travels I’ve seen all sorts of weapons open carried. I’ve seen damn near every type of pistol open carried from a baby Glock on a hip holster to a single action Colt Navy Revolver in a left pocket cross draw holster to an Sig P365 in a tactical thigh rig and other misc options.

In addition to open carried firearms I’ve seen numerous bladed weapons open carried. There is a guy I won’t claim to know who has open carried both a 6 and an 8 inch filet knife at the same time, yep 2 at at time, on his right hip. I’ve seen people open carry Bowie knives that hang from their belt almost down to their knee. Hell, even saw a guy carrying crossed katanas on his back.

But the question I ask is why? What purpose does this serve? I’ve heard many reasons why people open carry. One popular reason is it’s a God-given right. Didn’t realize there was such a thing. The only “given” rights available in the US I’m aware of are the ones granted by the Constitution and case law. Some people saw it’s because they don’t want to be a victim. Some say it’s a deterrent. The list goes on and on.

For me, I have decision making process I use to determine what I do. It involves weighing the pluses and minuses and picking the best option. So consistent with that mantra I choose not to open carry. For me concealed carry is the way to go for a few reasons.

Since my number one reason for carrying a weapon when I do is protection for me and any loved ones with me I do not think open carry best achieves that goal. When one open carries he is announcing he’s armed. Human nature is self preservation. So If I’m a bad guy desiring to harm someone I’m going to survey the situation before I make a move. If I see someone carrying a weapon I’m going to perceive that person as a threat to me. So that person is going to be my first target. I’m going to look at how he’s carrying to determine his strong side and maneuver to get on his blind weak side that way I get the drop on him. He’s dead before he even knows a threat exists. So much for open carrying. Didn’t do him any good.

Anyway that’s my take. What says you?

This topic has been battered for…………ever…………on various gun forums, etc.
No solid/convincing evidence either way, from what I understand, whether or not OC is a deterrent, or in fact, makes you a target.
Yeah, there are a few vids of idiots carrying in a sloppy fashion and having their Glocks yanked and similar.
Endless arguments.

CC for me in urban settings, for all the usual reasons.
OC in da woods, camping in da sticks, etc.

OC, unless engaged in hunting/fishing, IMO not a smart thing to do.

I am in favor of permit less carry.

Let me say this for open carry.

If you don’t do it (at large not me or you) it becomes abnormal. If it’s done regularly than less so. The other side of that coin is the jackasses doing police audit vlogs.

I open carry a lot. Mainly fishing, but I open carry in town as well. I’ll tell you why when I fish you’re GD right it makes me the first target. My daughter fishes with me a fair bit, not as much as she used to, but still purpose served. Also my buddy and I had one singular bad experience that could have gotten ugly, thankfully it didn’t happen years ago when we didn’t always make the best decisions. That was what pushed me to this. Same two wastes of oxygen appeared two weeks later and I made walking a certain direction a point. Heads down and silence. Also had a hilarious interaction with a certain OSP F&W officer who harassed my buddy about his leader length. When he approached I told him immediately that I was open carrying and where it was. He was cool with it but it was hilarious how fast he wanted to leave knowing it was my buddy whom he’d harassed. My buddy was flipping me off when I asked the ripper if he wanted to check my leader length. He says “oh yeah I do” holds it up to his shoulder and says “you’re fine”.

CC is better in most instances for certain. But this is a legal open carry state and I will exercise my natural born right that was affirmed by founding documents not to GRANT to me but to limit government. But what do I know I’m part Polish.

I think the real question here is how wide is our OP’s stance in that stall.

I never stand in the stall. I buy wipes by the case. A pack of them fit nicely in a pocket. First thing I do once the door is latched is to thoroughly wipe the seat multiple times with multiple wipes. Then I dry it with TP. No need to stand.

I’m all for it in the right hands. Love the stories where the open shooter in church is gunned down in Texas with hillbillies holding revolvers. Everyone should tote. I personally do not but I love it. I like open carry more than concealed.

But if I am in my Truck, both Semi, and personal, there is a full sized p226 in reach, chambered in 357 sig, at all times.

I could care less whether anyone else carry’s or not and if so how. Just threw it out there. Seemed like a non-controversial discussion could be had. [shrug’s shoulders]

I wipe very well thank you. First with TP then wipes. Can’t stand skid marks in my jeans.

Oh trust me there has been plenty times when I’ve been running hard and haven’t had the opportunity for a shower I’m absolutely embarrassed to even step foot inside a truck stop.

No doubt. I’ve been next to one or two in the fuel isles. That and chicken plants are why I keep a jar of Vick’s in the door cubby.
