When I was a youngster, we would visit family in Germany (we were the first (and only) immigrants to America on either side of my parents’ families)
We were not well to do……….a bit of an understatement.
One of the staple dinners was….
“Black” bread slice, covered with a sharp mustard, Swiss cheese slices, sliced ham, thick cut tomato slices, generously sprinkled with salt and pepper………..this is eaten open faced with knife and fork.
Side dish was a cucumber/potato salad.
Still one of my favorite meals….
