If the number of lots available exceeds the number of bids why aren't all bids winning bids?

Muskyboy?

I should make you splain that name first. But I'm actually a little bit afraid to find out.

The only thing I can think of is that the other bidders have bid on all the lots already. Otherwise, I think you're right, and any bid would be a winner.

Spose there are 10 lots. There may be only 3 bidders, but they've bid on everything. 5 lots here, 3 lots there, etc. Have you checked how many lots the others are bidding on?

LeeBot,

Haha, I am a musky fisherman, big, long fish with big teeth.

In the same list of bidders, it shows the number of lots they have bid on. I noticed that when the auction is actually closed there are a lot more bidders on that list than there were 10 seconds before the auction closed, and the number of lots bid on miraculously. equals the number of lots available. So I guess my question is are they deliberately not showing the actual total number of bidders and lots bid on, or is this a JR cigar scam?

A. A lot of people wait until the last second to bid (called "sniping") so they have a better chance of not being outbid, and

B. If the total of the list of bidders' "units" (the text in red print below the bidder names) does not equal the total lots available, then not all lots have been bid on and you are not bidding against other bidders. If the total does equal the total lots available, then you are now bidding against others for the same lots.

Post a link to a specific lot so we can see what you are talking about...

Stogie,

Next time it happens I will. My biggest concern is that, like JR CIgar auctions, if the site does not like the price as the auction ends there were suddenly ghost bidders that appeared at the end of the auction to purchase all lots available for a much higher price than anyone else had been bidding. Jr Cigars has since pulled their auction site but has left a pretty bitter taste in my mouth about the transparency of online cigar auctions....

All I can say is that lots of guys here win lots of auctions for pretty low prices... I used to get some smoking deals back when I bid on stuff that CBid offered.

Not anymore. I did like some of their By A.J. Fernandez exclusives as well as the Boneshaker Tombstone cigars, but they just got too shady for me to deal with. Every discount offer was matched by an equal price increase to offset any discounts....

Hmmm….
Took one look at their site and prices and selection, etc ……..MANY years ago, and knew it wasn’t for me.
And, I had no idea they dropped their auction site, which is not surprising, given it probably didn’t generate much business.
Bot bidding??
That accusation has been leveled at EVERY auction site at one time or another.
I’m not saying there wasn’t shenanigans at JR auction sites………….but…….even though they suq imho, I’d hope they weren’t/aren’t dishonest.

I spent quite a few nights with the auctions here at cbid during the past year. Bottom line is that putting in some time you can see some trends for night of the week and time of year. You will also see certain cigars get a lot of attention for several weeks after which the mayhem seems to settle a bit along with the prices.

I sure as hell wouldn't have any way to back up a claim of shill bidding. If the price isn't what you want to pay, move on.

Some fair/decent cigars seem forever popular and auction to auction prices don't fluctuate much. Still, if you are constantly poking around, you will occasionally see some go for cheap azz prices. These are sometimes auctions you chose not to bid on because ......well because that's the way it goes.

If you open up "All auctions" then select "ending soon" then select a brand, you'll see what's coming up that evening for something you want. Just put these in your watch list. Do that each day for a week or two or more and you can track what closed auctions go for in cigars you might like. You get a feel for how that cigar closes and that will set your expectation for what you want to bid. It should also give you a feeling as to whether or not you have any faith in how the auctions proceed

Interesting new occurance (at least new to me)...

https://www.cigarbid.com...-maduro-cigars/4823620/

High number of lots, but high starting bid on these... In regular (5 lots available) I have seen these recently go for $13.50/fiver...

Here there are 75 lots, but the starting bid is $17. For some reason, all the smaller lot auctions for these right now are all also at $17/fiver...

Is the fix in?

List price at JR Cigars for a 5 pack of these is $21, so you know nobody is paying that as they send out a 25% off coupon almost every day, making even the JR price $15/5 pack. I don't think I have ever seen an auction with 75 units available, and that is an unreasonable starting price. Could it be Camacho is setting their pricing or they are trying to send Camacho some message? Whatever the case, I seriously doubt they will get 75 bids at this starting price, or even at 13.50 for that matter. 17/5 is $68 per box so I don't think there is any chance of someone buying them all. With JR Cigar's normal 25% off coupon, they will sell you all you want at $60/box.

This is holiday season and there are a lot of large lots being offered at the moment.

Look at these more as a "buy it now" type of auction. They are around from time to time (different offerings) and they get traction from people who just want to pop in and buy. If there are other smaller lots of the same cigar during the auction period, they often go for less. Sometimes buying is about convenience and I'm sure cBid knows how to sell cigars.

A good number of folks don't "value" shop. At least not for every purchase they make.

You see the 10 pack auction is at $17 at the moment as well. Currently (9am 12/4) all lots are one buyer at $16 with 2 days to go. See how that one ends......

haha, thanks for that 10 pack news. Makes the 5 pack thing seem like it must just be a typo?

I'll have to try and remember to tune in for the end of that 5-pack auction.

It's not a typo. It's just an easy buy for some people I suppose. Occasionally there are auctions with 250 or more units. Right now they have "over 25 stocking stuffer" auctions. Click the banner at the top of the cBid home page and they will all be displayed.
