Not much of a scary / horror movie fan but iffin’ I hadda name the scariest, most horrific that I saw in the theaters, they’d be:

Jaws - the music was everything in that movie

Exorcist - imo, the Mt. Everest of the horror genre

The Conjuring will get your attention.

Insidious and Annabelle also get favorable mention. Been watching a lot here lately. I love it.

I saw Jaws in the theater with my family when I was 12. The place was packed and we couldn’t find seats together. They decided that me, the youngest should sit by myself. Frying pan

When my GF (…now wife…) and I went to see “The Exorcist”, she hid behind her sweater for more than half the movie.

Last night I started to think out loud about borrowing it from the library but before I could finish my sentence, she emphatically said “NO!”

Love...love...LOVE Vampire films! Especially John Carpenter's, Dracula 2000 and Queen of the Damned. Nosferatu, Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Underworld saga, Salems Lot, Lost Boys, Daybreakers, From Dusk Til Dawn...doesn't matter how many times I've seen them...I'm there.

For sheer horror...it has to be Hellraiser. They're scary good and scary awful. The first one...I couldn't eat spaghetti, lasagna or anything with tomato-based sauce for months!

I got spooked by that one, too. Used to enjoy going out to scary movies with my daughter, who loved them when she was a teen...we liked the Friday the 13th and Halloween movies ...but we ended that ritual after the Skeleton Key

I sometimes watch movies alone in the man cave, but never a scary movie...I'm just a big chicken...

Can't wait to see the Exorcist remake. Saw the original version as a teen and didn't sleep right for a week, read the book shortly after and didn't sleep right for a week after that, saw the directors cut when it hit theaters around 2001 or 2002 and didn't sleep right for a week and a half. Honestly, though it was good, I don't recommend reading the book it's even more disturbing than the movies. I think I'm going to hell just for reading it. Also I second whoever said that movie is the pinnacle, the Mt. Everest of the horror genre.
