Passed one today somewhere west of Fort Stockton, TX. It was sitting on the westbound shoulder of I-10, on 🔥. I don’t mean smoking either. Flames coming from the hood area were at least 3 feet tall. The cabin was also on fire. Nothing rearward of the cabin wad burning though. I guess the batteries are under the hood.

Must be something in the air, saw 3 different cars sitting on the sides of the road and on fire in the past week alone. All had fire personnel on the scene to keep them from being a bigger problem due to the fuel.

So, the batteries are under the floorboards and make up the lower deck of the chassis.... About 3" thick and go from axel to axel.

Under the hood is a storage "frunk", a heat pump, brakes, washer fluid, and a 12 volt "car battery".

Interesting that if it were a BMW burning (even an electric one) we would not think it noteworthy....

Just so happens that this was the first car I’ve actually seen burning on the side of the road. Have seen the aftermath of many, but never the actual process. Just happened to be a Tesla. Otherwise, I would have named the topic differently.

On the other hand, last night I had my first ride in a Tesla. An Uber driver was driving one. It was quiet. Other than that it wasn’t memorable.

You want an electric car, buy one. You don't, don't buy one.

Totally fair assessment.

Driving/owing are the real differentiators. Not better in all aspects, but in many. Not a panacea for automobiles.

It’s surprising how politically dividing non-gas cars are. Idiots like me assess them on the pure engineering cost/value proposition and the fun of the no transmission full power at all speeds thing. But for many, RWD gas drifters with loud exhausts are the only way to go. Or the simple joy of a truck that can roll coal - emphasis on simple.

But better or worse, like it or not, they will be the convention in years to come. Reminds me of when everyone thought the govmut was f*cking them by transition to unleaded gas.
