I’m not exactly a noob since I’ve been smoking for 20 odd years but there are aspects to it that I’m just getting into, like aging.
My usual process is yo bid, win, get the sticks, and then smoke em. Never gave a thought to aging.
So how do know if I have to let them sit? I actually prefer not to have to wait ( and I realize I don’t have to) but I want to maximize the taste,of course. Is there a date stamp or something on the packages that I’m missing? Is it a touch or feel thing? I’m lost here!

The key to aging is to buy so many cigars that you don't have a place to put the new ones. So you come up with makeshift storage, and keep smoking the stuff that you already have. Eventually, you remember that you bought cigars a while back, find wherever it was you put them, and they have aged.

In terms of what to look for, try one every 6 months or so and see if the taste has changed, whether you like it better. Etc.

There are people on here who will tell you that any cigar you buy should sit for a year before you smoke it. Can't say that I think they're wrong.

I thought this thread was going to be about getting old. I'm rather new to aging too. Sometimes when I wake up, a part of my body aches and I did nothing other than fall asleep.

OP - sounds like you never got caught up with the “collecting” (…aka “hoarding”…) of cigars. Good for you! Applause

But yes, there are cigars that, while tasting and smoking good fresh, are even better with longer (…as in years…) humidor nap / resting time. Then again, after 20+ years of smoking freshies, your palate may be so ingrained that you won’t enjoy the smoother, less spicy, rested ‘gars.

So out of curiosity, how many cigars do you smoke a day / week / month?

So this depends on your tastes and here’s why. There’s a couple things aging can do IMO rounding a blend and mellowing it somewhat. Many BOTL prefer some blends not aged (stronger cigars that will lose their “edge” in taste and or nic hit. On the opposite end do you want a really light cigar to turn into an airball?

Just something I’d consider. Two things I really like aging myself are Cubans and strong habano wrapped cigars but that’s my personal generalized list. Some specific cigars that age well IMO are Fuente Anejo, Ashton VSG and ESG, Tatuaje Brown labels, Perdomo Habanos, Fuente Hemingways.

Some cigars I’m not big on aging are Tatuajes with CBL wrappers, Viajes in general and Ligas. Not that I don’t have any of these but it’s not something I aim for I’ve gotten them aged from buying and not smoking them all.

Simple formula……but you have to have storage in place.
Buy TWICE the number of cigars you smoke per month…….every month, for two years.

Then, after two years, simply buy roughly the same amount per month that you smoke.
You’re welcome. You will now have a constant supply of well rested cigars.

I guess I can do 2-3 per week, weather permitting. sometimes its less (here in NY its frigid so I spent the whole day dreaming about a good smoke, but not able to do so).

I certainly dont have a refined palate. Honestly, a lot of these things taste the same to me. I LIKE that taste, but going from Cohibas to Camachos isnt a big stretch. Cohiba to Man o War Virtue or Kuba is obviously more of a leap. I get that, and I can definitely taste the difference, for sure.

Here is where I currently stand...I have a desk humidor and a tupperdor that I just completed with cedar trays, cigar oasis hygrometer and Bovedas. Desk humi has the same setup. The wood humi has some Kubas and Acids, that I dont really care for, but keep them around. The tupperdor has about 20 or so Cohibas, Camachos, a few Macunudos, and Rockys. Not much.

So, while I dont smoke daily, I do want to smoke good stuff when I do. I cant say money is NO object, but I can pretty much buy what I want, within reason. I dont buy boxes though, I usually do 5 and 10 packs. That works for me, though I have split a box of whatevers with friends over the years.

Funny, my friends think Im smoking the "good stuff"! I dont think Im smoking junk, but thinking maybe its time to smoke better and really get into it...I love just having the cigars. Like coins or comic books...just having them makes me smile.

This is probably way too much info for you all, Lol.

I started with one 105 qt ice chest. Then bought a 115qt tupperdore container. Now I have the chest 4 115 qt tupperdores a 40qt and a 300ct and 400 ct humi . So I am aging and not meaning to . I have boxes that have never been opened. I got hooked and have not quit buying. Multiple boxes of cigars I like all the Viaje stuff that has come out lately except for the hamaki or what ever the hell it was. This hobby can consume you before you know it.

No, but your going to need a bigger tupperdore

Odd cross section of publishers, but I'll allow it. Batman is undeniably cool even if he is DC. I'm primarily X-men and Ghost Rider with a couple different offshoot interests.

I’m a DC boy mainly. I read the stuff on line now since I don’t have room for any more boxes of comics! 45 years of buying, off and on!

Everyone, well, most people, will eventually settle on an cigar count “zone”
Might be 50-100 cigars.
Might be 200-500, 500-1000……..there are folks here with 5,000+ cigars

A lot depends on how many cigars you smoke on a regular basis.

Yeah, I decided to focus on completing the old stuff once I got sick of the sales boosting rebooting games. Now I'm down to mostly ones I can't afford

My biggest concern is running low, so whenever I see open space I start looking to buy. A few years ago I emptied a cooler and imposed a storage limit. A gurkfest or 2 or 3 got rid of a lot of the unremarkable stock and left room for more tasty stock to age. My biggest concern now is stock getting over aged. I've had some so called top of the line cigars fade out of flavor.

I write the date I received the box/five pack on the packaging (or a tiny sticker on singles). I used to smoke a cigar right off the truck, but I stopped doing that when I realized that most cigars need to 'breathe.'

My personal method is to let 'new' cigars rest in the humidor for at least 2 weeks without cellophane before I smoke one.
