The moral necessity of DeSantis’s immigrant flight It was necessary for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to fly illegal immigrants from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. If you want to know why, look no further than President Joe Biden's interview on 60 Minutes on Sunday night.
Given at least 15 minutes to ask whatever questions it thought important, CBS News made no mention of border security. Not a peep. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Yet illegal immigrants are crossing the southern border at a record pace . The number passed 2 million this fiscal year, according to data released on Sept. 19.
As a direct result of these record high illegal crossings, record numbers are also dying on the southern border — 750 so far this year, which is 200 more than last year and 500 more than in 2020. These deaths are all due to the chaos caused by Biden's catch-and-release border policy. CBS News either doesn’t care about these dead immigrants or does not want to embarrass Biden by asking difficult questions that the public deserves to have answered.
Sending a few immigrants to a Democratic enclave inhabited by liberals who mostly support Biden and are plenty rich enough to look after the new arrivals is an effective way of drawing a national crisis properly to national attention. It also puts those responsible for the crisis on the spot and asks what they propose doing about it.
Nor is it only Republicans who are trying to get Biden to pay attention to the disaster he has caused. The mayor of Yuma, Arizona, asked the White House this May to stop busing immigrants to his small city of 97,000 . Yuma’s leaders told the White House it should bus immigrants only to communities of a million or more people because small towns don’t have the infrastructure to shelter, feed, and educate so many families.
Biden has ignored Yuma’s pleas, and the buses of immigrants have kept coming.
The Democratic mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, also reached out to the White House for assistance with immigrants flooding his community. “I would like to hear a plan as to what they're doing to counter the possibility of a surge in people on the border,” Mayor Rolando Salinas told the Washington Examiner. “Nobody has reached out to me or to the city. I haven't heard from anyone.”
The situation in El Paso, Texas, is even worse, with immigrants sleeping on the streets all over town. The situation has become so bad that the Democratic mayor has already sent more than 50 busloads to New York City, over and above any sent there and to Washington, D.C., by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. These buses have been arriving in New York since August, but CBS News did not bother to report on them.
Communities on the southern border are being overwhelmed by the sheer number of immigrants arrested and released into the United States. Biden would prefer to ignore the crisis his policies have created, and his media allies are helping him. That is why DeSantis’s immigrant flight to Martha's Vineyard was necessary. It has forced the media to pay attention to a crisis they are trying to ignore in order to protect Biden.
It is unclear what exactly was said to the immigrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard or by whom. If they were lied to, that was wrong, and there should be consequences for those tricking the immigrants with falsehoods. DeSantis, for his part, has said he simply gave them a free ride to help them reach a "sanctuary" jurisdiction. If the immigrants were told that they had a better chance of finding work there, that is probably true. As one immigrant told reporters, "I didn’t expect it to be like this, but I feel comfortable here. I want to be here.”
If you want to know what real cruelty to immigrants looks like, just look at what Biden did to Haitians living under the International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas, exactly one year ago. For months, he had released Haitians into the U.S. after they were arrested after illegally crossing the southern border. This policy signaled to thousands of Haitians who had been living peacefully throughout Central and South America for years that they could now enter the U.S. So many of them came that the Border Patrol couldn’t process them fast enough, creating a shantytown under the bridge. Embarrassed by the images of chaos in Del Rio, Biden changed policies and, instead of releasing Haitians into the U.S., started flying the immigrants to Haiti even though that wasn't where many had come from.
“How could Biden do this to us?” Haitian immigrant Sonia Piard asked reporters after being forced off a chartered plane in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital. “We did not know we were going back to Haiti,” Piard continued. “Nobody told us we were going back to Haiti.”
Where were all the Democrats and editorial boards calling Biden’s Haiti flights a “crime against humanity” back then? Martha’s Vineyard is a paradise compared to that hell on Earth.
Residents of Martha’s Vineyard did not let the immigrants stay on their island. Despite having hundreds of huge homes now empty because summer is over, and despite having a nonprofit organization with $16 million in assets created to remove “the barriers that prevent equal rights for us all,” they called on the National Guard to help ship the immigrants to a nearby military base. If only Yuma had thought of that.
Flying immigrants to random cities throughout the country is not a solution to the border crisis. If it were, Biden would have already solved it — under his direction, the Department of Homeland Security has been building tent cities designed to process immigrants into the U.S. as fast as possible. That strategy isn’t working. It is only encouraging more immigrants to come.
The only way this border crisis gets solved is if Biden is forced to end his catch-and-release policies that are creating it. Democrats have long been effective in executing political stunts to embarrass Republicans. It is good to see Republicans like DeSantis fight back by taking decisive action to elevate this problem in a way that exposes the Democrats' hypocrisy and Biden’s policy failure.

I'm all for governors doing what they're doing to raise awareness on the border debacle. They're fed up. They're being drained and it's all solvable. What Biden did with the policies Trump had in place (which were working!) is his and his parties pride dictating the ruin of this nation. If we don't have a secure border we won't have a nation for much longer. Stop pretending we do.
