Is Exercise Stupid?

Best shape of my life was probably when I was in my early twenties. Working seven days a week on our dairy farm. Bailing hay, making fence, shoveling chit etc. Was still too skinny 6'2" and 135. Not enough protein or calories coming in.

Knew people who ran every day. Thought they were nuts. Pounding their ankles, knees and hips on pavement day after day. My skinny/fat ass laughed at them.

Fast forward through almost 30 years of being a desk jockey in corporate america contributed to my sloth as I climbed to 212 pounds at my worst.

Its been about 15 months since starting light and about 4 months into moderate exercise.

A knee and a hip have gone from inconveniences to soreness to stiff and achy. My running friends from the 80s and 90s have stopped running. One has bone on bone in one knee.

I look and feel better (other than the knee and hip). BP and cholesterol both down. But at the cost of knee and hip issues? Maybe replacements?

Is exercise stupid?

Exercise is for the "rich and very well off $$$"
They are so bored with life in general and the current gash they are banging they gotta go to the gym and try and impress strange gash...

If I didn't have to scrounge thru trash and dumpsters every day to survive...I might have time for exercise?

scrounging thru trash and dumpsters sounds like exercise... you could make and sell a video... '5 hours abs by Scrounging'... maybe even play some oldies to go along with it... 'Scrounging to da Oldies' or somethin... Think

Pick a better exercise for yourself. Stairmaster? Elliptical? Adaptive motion trainer? Hell, just walking is good for you if you do it briskly.

Tank wants to smell every fkn pole and hydrant, not to mention patches of grass... so brisk is not happening until the last mile of the walk when his mind goes off of other dog smells to his food bowl.

Just staying out of the easy chair is gonna help. (Not suggesting you sit around a lot). I don’t exercise but I’ve always been very active. Ive been fairly lucky as I’m in pretty good shape so far. Guess we’ll see how Father Time treats me

Exercise is not just running, biking etc it’s getting off your dead ass and moving. We were made to move and not watch the tube. Ever see what peeps looked like 50 years ago when they did manual jobs?

We have become a bunch of fat fuqs due to our lifestyles . MOVE!

At 29 yrs old, I was warned by a young orthopedic surgeon at the Kerlan Jobe Clinic, who later became the team doctor for the L.A. Angels, that my knees were not equipped to withstand running and tennis...twenty years of running and tennis later, knucklehead me had my right knee replaced...

he suggested alternate forms of exercise, like walking, swimming and bicycling...

so yes...the wrong kind of exercise is stupid...

That won't work. If you have enough cash, strippers won't run. If you don't, you'll never catch them

+1

After I had my 2nd shoulder surgery, my orthopedic surgeon recommended swimming as part of the rehab process. Initial efforts left me pretty winded even though I was in good tennis shape. Should have kept up the 3 times a week sessions, I was kinda decent after 3 months.

Swimming the breast stroke & side stroke is best after a shoulder acromioplasty, I know from experience back in 1994?....not freestyle or butterfly( the stupist swimming stroke known to mankind)..

Walking also but it has to be brisk or hilly climbs ...flat walking is worthless...
Biking is great too...just put on strobe lights as not to be run over by FOSSILS WITH WRAP AROUND SUNGLASSES WEARING WHITE VINYL VELCRO STRAPPED SHOES PURCHASED FROM THE BACK OF THE SUNDAY PAPER PARADE RAG/MAG.

It pains me to watch people run. I can just feel the the impact on my ankles, knees, hips, back. If wanted to do some serious exercise, I would go with a pool if you have one available (that's a whole body workout). Our local community college has rather nice workout center. Pool, racket ball courts, workout gym, etc. Free for enrolled students, probably $25/month or non students. Also have a Planet Fitness and a few locally owned gyms

Biking is good to for lower body and cardio if you can find a place that has hills and stuff.

I bike a couple miles nearly everyday. But to conserve my energy, I typically use it in full electric mode.

While at "work" I probably walk 10 miles a day. It burns calories but it's not a cardio workout.

Walking Tank, told an older couple who were running that walking the same distance burned the same amount of calories.

It's a fact. 5 miles... running or walking... same calories, different time. Faster running, slower walking, same energy burned.

I was convinced after the move (and not looking at a scale for months) I was close to 200 lbs. I'm 184. All I have been doing is walking Tank. Maybe eating a bit less.

Isn't it better cardio though? Not that I'm advocating running. I absolutely hate it. Ran cross country for three years in high school and hated every second other than the finish line

I ran distance for 42 years. Anything from 5 miles per day to many full marathons and trail running. We were made to walk and run. If done correctly it never caused problems, but I tore my knee up playing pickleball.

Still walk about 5 miles each day.

Cardio is weird. My experience has been early on in May, I couldn’t get into the cardio zone. Heart would flutter and feel funny. For a few weeks, I could comfortably get into that zone. Over the last month, I’m doing pretty much the same amount and type of exercise, but not getting into the range.

Maybe that is because I’m getting in better shape it’s harder to get and maintain a heartbeat of 120+?

Swim laps.
Great cardiac, musculoskeletal, etc. Prolonged buoyancy relieve neck and back issues.
Can't hurt you knees, hips or other joints. Improves ROM.

As the said in GOT, Winter’s Coming. It isn’t reasonable to believe I’d regularly get dressed, do the 15 mile round trip, get changed, wet and dried on a regular basis. Perhaps that is slothful. Am just being straight with myself. There is a YMCA five miles away. Maybe I could run in place while being in a sauna. That could speed the heart up.

Or, wait until November and swim everyday in HD’s Texas pool.

Yes, I could did some of that in the 80s. We lives on the top of a large hill. Had much fun gradually going downhill. A fun 30 minutes. The two hours back up the hill, less so. Cute aside. Was dating my now wife for a couple years when we went with a bunch of people. She didn’t want to do downhill skiing because of the possibility of injury. She went cross country skiing instead….. and broke her elbow. Mellow

Used to use one pretty regularly a couple years back before my laziness resurgence. I liked it better than ellipticals and cycles for cardio. Felt like it worked more of the body and was low impact as far as the joints. Can be a pain if your back is acting up though

Used a rowing machine back many moons ago. One of those that was tied to a flywheel type of thing. Pretty good full body workout along with cardio. If you have back issues, I wouldn't recommend it. Using good posture while doing it, it can help strengthen your back but if used poorly will exasperate back issues.

My weak links in my body result from a previously stupid stuff when I was young.
- Broken ankle (sliding into 2nd base in beer league softball in college) that aches sometimes and arthritis in it as predicted from the orthopedic doctor some 30 years ago.
- Sciatica in the back (blew it out lifting and twisting putting in a huge window AC - it flares up if I'm stupid and don't lift $hit with my back and not my legs)
- A shoulder that was separated back in high school wrestling along with a partial break of my collar bone. Again, doc predicted I'd have some arthritis in it when I get older.

From what I have seen, your body has a "use it or loose it" clause.

So while I have always had a desk job, I always do my own chores for the exercise value of it.
I mow, trim, edge, rake, paint the deck, all in the great out of doors.

And when I'm tired of that sh1t I go play golf.....
