Just curious if any of you deer hunters enjoy a stick while in your stand. I do not but my relatives all smoke cigarrettes and have no problem killing deer.

I'm not a big-game hunter, but while the idea that the smoke could spook them SEEMS logical, I've got reason to believe it wouldn't hurt ...

Some of you may recall a picture I put up 2 years ago this past summer ... my wife and I were at our cabin in the mountains of eastern Utah ... I was sitting on the back deck, reading a book and enjoying a cigar when 2 moose showed up within 25 feet of me ... not only did the smoke not put them off, they almost seemed to be investigating it ... I made the comment at the time that I thought the cigar smoke had been a magnet ...

Now I know you might be saying that moose are not as easily spooked as deer are and you're right, but the smoke sure doesn't slow down the deer who arrive in quantity every evening to drink from the stream that is immediately behind the cabin ...

It isn't the smoke that spooks a deer or any creature.. it is the human scent.. animals have a very keen sense to them... like dogs for instance they can sense a person fears them, they are the first to alert on something being wrong... deer and other animals in the wild can also do the same.... they know every inch of the wooded area of their travel... thus with age they become more keen... I smoke while hunt and fish.. but I always take out with me what I went in with... I field dress my cigs and don't leave anything around the area that can alert an oncoming possible...

I hear ya. That's why I prefer to be 30 feet up. The scent tends to stay high.

My thoughts are that the deer will smell the smoke. It is not a natural smell for the woods so does it make them so cautious that they will not approach or do they investigate like what Steve encountered? Maybe I'll try it the 2nd season.

Never tried it, but I'm sure it wouldn't be any more off-putting than the sandwich I'm eating or the coffee I'm drinking. I agree that it's the human scent that drives them to the next area code in a big hurry.

Nope pissin in the woods will send them as snowwolf says into the next zip code...

If you can place your stand in an area where the wind is in your face and are higher up then any ridge around.. you should be fine...

My brother and his wife have one of the best places I've seen for hunting deer... I've only hunted with them a couple times and both times came out of the woods with deer... they've got a ravine (bottom area) that runs through their property... and when the shootin starts these deer will head for the low ground and high brush area's... I've seen deer crawl to try and get past ya.. Next Year I'm going to give bow hunting a try again...

Most years (this being one of them), after late Oct, a snowmobile would be required to get any closer than 10 miles down the canyon ...

I carry my whole house when I hunt.
The last 4 deer I killed, besides with my truck have been from my back porch. There is a herd that lives right behind my house. They are used to smelling coffee and cigar smoke from my back porch. As a matter of fact, I harvested a 6 point this morning, while enjoying a BBF.
I just finished gutting and cleaning the meat. The backstrap is now on the smoker.
Happy Thanksgiving guys.

i'v killed many deer when i smoked ciggarettes in ground blinds, including a very trophy 8 point at 50 yards.
right now my stand is 16 ft up, 8x10, with 5x8 cabin space, 5x8 deck space, and i don't worry about cigar smoke, being that high up.
