On my recent trip to Santa Monica, the hotel had a sundeck which was perfect for a cigar one evening.
Except the following sign was on the door leading to the deck:
"As a result of smoking, this building contains materials known by the state of California to cause cancer"
A "no smoking" sign was OUTSIDE on the deck.

We still, however, enjoyed our Black Pearls....

too bad you weren't a little closer, 'gater ... I'd loved to have joined you on that deck for a Black Pearl

I noticed in a hotel I stayed in recently that the same sort of things were posted. Again california.

p.s. since we couldn't smoke in the rooms, my brother0in-law and I decided to grab a couple of cigars and head down to union square (we were in SF) we lit them up and were enjoying them thoroughly in the middle of the night, when some guy comes up and talks to us. As he was talking, he asked if he could have a puff on our cigars. We both told him "no" so he grabbed the one out of my brother-in-laws mouth, took a drag and walked away. Being as the guy was a little crazy, we let him go, but man was it a bummer.

uh, huh ... Union Square at night ... that figures ... I pretty much saw that coming from the beginning of your story ...

Now then ... next time you're staing within easy walking distance of Union Square, you let me know ... no need to put yourself in a position of having some wino grab your cigar when you can sit back comfortably indoors ... in a leather chair ... with bar service at your disposal ...

Like I say ... drop a note ...

thanks for the offer, we had just got done eating at The House of Prime Rib and were in no condition to do anything but walk. We also had to get up pretty early the next morning and go to mountain view for the Bridge School benefit concert.

Yo lukin:

If someone did that to me I would crush my cigar out using one of his ears for an ashtray, (it wouldn't matter how big he was). Most likely all the bath-houses were closed and he needed something to suck on.

A bum looking for a free puff of a cigar owned by a hard working person? is refused then just takes it anyway

Sounds more like a democrat trait to me

Definitely a democrat out of work and nuts. Being in S F he was probably gay and had aids. I would have let him keep the cigar and go on his merry way also. You don't want him bleeding on you! I live in S D, go Chargers, which pulled through for Bush.

Steve, thanks again for your generous offer. My trip was short and busy.
As for the sign, it was the wording that shocked me. The building contains cancerous materials???
Massachusetts is going crazy over the current no-smoking kick, but our buildings aren't cancerous.
At least not yet.

Gater

They soon will be if they follow the Califonia model! You couldn't get smoking rooms in the hotel?
