I've been thinking about the whole placebo effect w/ cigars. What I mean is, it seems lots of times you buy a $10 cigar that you've heard SO much about, keep it for 3 months finally light it up with anticipation and you've already determined that this thing is going to be good no matter what - even if maybe it isn't. So I was wanting to test my taste buds. I was thinking we could do a trade for three gars - one premium, one middle gar, and one crapper - but w/o the band - and then after I've smoked all three, the sender would tell me what I smoked. Might be interesting. That way I know I'm evaluating the gar w/o any prejudice. The three would have to be something I couldn't identify immediately by sight (like a Trilogy or short story)Anyone want a similar test?

Penguin13 & Jd1 did this sort of thing several months back. They were some of my favorite threads (check them out by searching Penguin #1 thru #10).

It would be a great thing to do again, but my palate is not nearly discriminating enough to provide knowledable reviews. I'd be happy to pony up an unbanded sampler though.

I'm with wer. I was very interested in the taste test that they had going, but I can't do that. I almost never taste all those fancy flavors. I just know if I like it or not. Go for it and we will all stay tuned.

Anyone willing to put his reviews on the board "blind" like that is a masochist. Probably more than 50% will not agree with any review. And worse, you risk the possibility that you really like dog rockets!

Yaup...those Penguin #1 through Penguin #10 were great...alot of anticipation from alot of readers...

Blind test is always the most honest way to try different cigars.

I wouldn’t mind doing it. I did something like this on my web page but I sent the same 3 unbanded cigars to 3 different people. People wrote their own review and I posted it along with a pic of the cigar.

This is a great idea. I've seen a few sites that do reviews. Some use a checklist. Might help with smokers who might not be as eloquent or discriminating when trying to describe a flavor. Such as...

Construction: A)Excellent b)Good c)Satisfactory d)Poor
Draw: A)Perfect b)tight c)loose d)plugged
Burn: etc

Could get some reviews from the average smokers as well.
Just an idea.

Would it be better to put blank bands on them? Like maybe red, white, and blue. That way, the tasters shouldn't get the cigars mixed up. Only the sender would know what they really are, and everyone would be on the same page.

The colored bands is a good idea...especially if you send me a 5x50 and 5x49...sorry, I wouldn't be able to tell.

Ethan do I get to have my rum and if so how the heck would I know about the cigar lol. I'm out this time but yes I like the idea. Although I have had some 7-$10.00 that I was disappointed in. hey Dave Harley how was the smoke I sent you to try ???

Ok, first of all - I NEVER said I would POST my reviews!!! I certainly don't think that much of myself!

I can see it now...... "the construction was top quality, the burn was flawless, the flavor was rich and full..." - cigar: Dutchmaster

Maybe I'll post my reviews AFTER I find out what the cigars were and know that I won't be humiliated! I did read some of the Penguin/Jd1 threads, and they were very interesting....

So anyway... thanks for all the replies. Sorry, I forgot to leave my email. Whoever wants to do this with me send me an email. We can do 3-5 ranging from bad to premo. I might do this twice, depending on the emails I get.

jd shot straight from the hip and his reviews were right on :) I said as a rule in my blind taste test was I never gave a stick I didn't enjoy myself. Except for the Pimp stick. I hate those but wanted to get an honest review of it. Have fun with this.

From the few that I've had, yes, of course I agree... but I'm pretty sure there are a few premos out there that I would give a bad review to from lack of a developed palate.... and maybe some as well known as a PAM.... I guess we'll find out!!!

... after thinking about it, though, I'm not QUITE sure about that PAM... so Dave, maybe you should send me one (unbanded of course) so I can give my review and then we can see.....
