California Fast Food Workers Short Lived Pay Mandated Raise

Now that California has mandated another $7 an hour raise the next step will be even fewer fast food jobs. Seems like when they started kicking around the last raise from $7.65 to $13 an hour many outlets invested heavily in kiosks and reduced workers and/or hours. Now that they’ve instituted another huge raise I suspect the fallout will be even worse for those meant to be helped than the last ill advised mandate.

At some point one would think the idiots in Sacramento would realize taking orders at McDonald’s isn’t a career position.

Well, the reality of it is that for a sizeable portion of the folks currently doing the job, it IS a career position.
This isn’t like yesteryear when McDonald’s predominately hired pimply faced high school kids who served up your fries and burger.
Lots of elderly folks, marginalized folks, semi retired folks, immigrants and so on work in the fast food industry.
For many of these folks, it’s one of the few options they have.

So you are saying that a lot of people will lose their jobs and will have to find another?
But LEFTY Progressive theory is if you artificially raise hourly pay above market prices by government fiat, the proles will get richer. Confused

Some would say that we don't want or need businesses that do not pay their full time people a living wage, as they wind up being of food stamps and so on.

Others will tell you that leveraging down labor costs is the only way to go, as nothing is so American as wage slavery.

But the concentration of wealth goes on unabated.

You lefties with your "living wage" and "wage slavery" shtick. You've got a lot of nerve since your progressive policies are most responsible for making people poorer.

My buddies in CA already sent me pictures of the new Kiosks in McDonalds. Nobody was taking orders.

Companies will automate or vacate. Mark my words. California politicians are bending Californians over.

I heard they going to fix that concentration of wealth thing by making people "pay their fair share" so the Democrats can have a greater concentration of more wealth.

The quickest and fairest way to fix this is through a free labor market. The government meddling never stops and it never helps. Also put tighter restrictions on entitlement programs. When businesses won’t pay labor enough to satisfy their needs then labor will follow the market where conditions satisfy them appropriately. Competition is good for labor and it also produces better, more efficient small and big businesses that benefit consumers. Let freedom reign.

But Lefties say that if you leave wages to the free market, evil capitalist employers will only want to pay SLAVE WAGES.

I learned that from Brewha.

LEFTY economics has consequences.

Burger King, In-N-Out, and Others Raise Prices Significantly 2 Days After California’s $20 Minimum Wage Kicks In

by Samuel Short, The Western Journal Apr. 4, 2024 7:00 am

Quote:
Californians are getting a lesson in economics courtesy of the state’s new minimum wage law.

A new law, taking effect this past Monday, created a minimum wage for fast-food workers of $20 an hour.

The New York Post reported that many chains in the state have already increased their prices to deal with the new wage.

Which chains are affected by the new wage?

The Post reported, “The law applies to restaurants offering limited or no table service and which are part of a national chain with at least 60 establishments nationwide.”

The old minimum wage for these restaurants was $16 an hour per state law. With an increase of $4, the Post found several chains have increased menu items to offset that.

The Texas Double Whopper meal at Burger King went from $15.09 on March 29 to $16.89 by April 1. The Big Fish Meal went up from $7.49 to $11.49, with other items on the menu going up by 25 cents to $1.

In-N-Out Burger saw burgers go up 25 cents and soft drinks by a nickel. Hart House, owned by actor and comedian Kevin Hart, increased all milkshake prices regardless of size by a dollar, sandwiches by 50 cents, and large fries by $1.10 going from $4.49 to $5.99.

While Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s haven’t seen price increases, one would have to imagine they are on the way.

Just got a text from my buddy in CA.

McDonald's drive thru is closed. Nobody taking orders. Only option is to go inside and use the kiosk.

Huh... looks like the $20 min wage is closer to $0 dollars and unemployed.

It's true that McDonald’s has become a luxury that fewer and fewer people can afford. A Triumph of Progressivism.

I saw that even before the $20.00 minimum wage dicktate, earlier in the year Micky D's restaurants in places like San Franciso were already charging over $7.00 for an Egg McMuffin. How high can it go now?

It's interesting that the Egg McMuffin was invented by a franchisee in Santa Barbara, the original price being 63 cents.

Its garbage food. Its just convenient. When the 2 McDoubles and a large coke pushed 9 bucks I swore I was done with them. That was years ago, and I haven't been back. It's just not that good.

The people thinking burger flippers and fry cooks should make 15 bucks an hour or more have lost sight that its an entry level job. It was never designed to sustain buying a car, a home and paying for college.

Can't remember the last time I had McDonald's. I do love their fries... but they're a heart attack in a cardboard cup.

And out of an abundance of caution for our health concerns they’re now only giving you about 6 fries in that tiny cardboard French frie holder for your $6.99.

There is a local popular Mom & Pop chicken place in town that has been around for like 3 generations. Many years ago they use to have a chicken farm out back the small restaurant out front. The chicken farm is not there any longer but the chicken place is still running strong. Chicken of various versions like a whole chicken, chicken meals of selected white and/or dark meat, chicken tenders, chicken wings, burgers, fries, cheese sticks, fried pickles and stuff like that.

Other than the owner and his family and the cooks, it's mostly high school or college kids running the front. The place gives back to the community by donating food to the local food pantries, sponsoring little league sports teams and stuff. They pay above state minimum wage (I think MA minimum wage is around $16/hr) to support the kids but if they were mandated to pay $20/hr they would probably pack it in and call it a day. The community would probably lose the donations that they offer and jobs for the kids. That's a negative.

Minimum wage is not meant to be a livable wage to support an entire family with bills, insurance, food, housing etc.. If you expect taking orders at a fast food joint, being a cashier at a grocery store, handing out doughnuts and coffee in the drive up window and so on... if you expect that income to support a household then you need to reevaluate your expectations. It's a starting wage and use it and the other opportunities available to start your way to get you going so you can move on to get further skills or education to achieve a true living wage.

Kind of like welfare, it should be a temporary solution to get somebody on their feet, not a permanent position. Make welfare workfare and see how many want free money for providing nothing.

I heard California will lead the way to Civil War by splitting in two by secession. Free California will join with Texas with help from Florida. The Union will invade the rebel alliance and start slaughtering.. More states will then join the insurrection.

I saw the movie trailer.
