Lance's box arrived early last week, but life has been keeping me busy.
Here is the list of contents, first the smokes...
3 beautiful looking toros with custom Patriots logo bands, all marked on left side of the Flying Elvis "CigarBid Blind Tasting"...and to the right side of Pat's logo "Spring 2021"....awesome bands, one Red, one Pewter/White, and one Dark Blue.
Hitchhikers included...

La Aurora Belicoso had before and smoked this right away

Cuban Aristocrat nh

Oliva Ct. Reserve had and really enjoy these

La Palina Paley's Vault in glass tubo nh

Ave Maria Immaculata perfecto(maybe?)nh, but have a couple in waiting

Black Market Filthy Hooligan had...actually my local just got these in a week or so ago, and I've had 3 or 4 recently(love these)

Perdomo Slow Aged 826 had several (one of my first purchase on cbid)

Now the swag...

A big bag of homemade? jerky...really delicious, and about gone...nom nom nom

A nice little Packet of the Patriot's logo bands, in the above mentioned colors, marked "Rick Amann Personal Collection"(really cool and distinctive, and much appreciated)Beer

A "Humidor Notes" pocket notebook, with spaces for recording notes on cigars smoked...pretty cool,I've never seen one like this...blank spots for brand, country, date purchased, price, food and drink accompaniment,weather....and several more also includes glue dots for affixing band into notebook.

and last but not least, a sealed envelope marked "open after smoking blinds"

That covers it, and Thank you very much Lance...
I have already smoked The La Aurora and enjoyed it...

I have also dipped into the Blinds, and started with the Red banded Beauty...I have no idea what it was ,other than FANTASTIC!!!...I will smoke the others in the near future...I'll fire up the White/Pewter band Monday night, after work.
I'm fairly confident the red band will be hard to beat, but I'm gonna keep an open mind until I burn through them all, and then I'll post my reviews and guesses once all the evidence has been smoked.

Also enjoying reading all the reviews from everyone...great job guys...flashed back to an old Windowpane I had reading your reviews opel... very interestingApplause

Rick

I am glad you enjoyed your box. I am interested in the results and your thoughts of the Blinds. I like making bands not so much of Patriot bands but we do things for BOTL.. lol

I just started making homemade beef jerky so I am glad you like it.

The Humidor Notes is a book I found a few years back and I like them. I usually note in the book the first time smoking a cigar or special cigars. Then I am not using up all the pages on everyday smokes. FYI I don't use the glue dots provided but I use a glue stick to secure the band to the page.

Enjoy and I can't wait to read your reviews.

Review #2

My second time.

I think she was Nicaraguan. Her skin was dark and slightly oily in the twilight. She may also have been partly Dominican or even Peruvian. Exotic. Mysterious.

She wasn't nude, but her covering was completely see through, so I took it off and felt her up. Nice full body, thicker than my first, but not too thick. She was a hardbody as well, but soft in all the right places. She was shorter than my first, but that just made her average height.

I started her up, and she immediately let me know she was spicy and not weak.

From the beginning to the end, getting something out of her was easy. But not too easy.

She had a beautiful ash. It was white/gray, but somehow went well with her dark skin. I wasn't put off.

As I got deeper into her, she mellowed some. She wasn't as bold as in the beginning but had become a little creamy. I like creamy.

I thought she seemed to finish up a little quickly. I could have gone longer, but she just didn't seem into it. But, hey, an hour is about average isn't it? It was good while it lasted.

Her taste stayed in my mouth for a while.

Conclusion:

Good mid-grade cigar. I'm interested in finding out what it was. Nicaraguan and maybe Dominican/Peruvian? But it reminded me of a Perdomo.

I'm basically talking out of my @ss at this point. I'll stop.

TY. I only said that because RyJ Reserve Maduro has some Peruvian in it, and the cigar kinda reminded me of one of those. But spicier.

Alright Jake, let's get #3 sparked

RIP Keith.

There is a blue foot band on this milk chocolate Toro and im unsure if it's a clue or a distraction. Double cap (I think) with some visible seems and a bit of heft in the hand. Velvety wrapper with a faint manure and almost no smell off the foot aside for a very faint tobacco. I clip the cap and the wrapper splits around 2 inches exposing the binder. Draw is perfect and after spitting some tobacco shreds out of my mouth it tastes as the foot smells: almost like nothing.

1st
Low end of adequate smoke production. Light pepper transitions into cherry and some sort of baking spice similar to cinnamon. Judging by initial looks and the two cigars I already sacrificed I was guessing this to be the low end but I'll admit the initial flavors and draw are very nice. As I progress the cherry gets a little absurd and I'm not sure if it's koolaid or fruit roll up but it's that pronounced and almost chemically. I'd really like a little more smoke but that's my only gripe really. Im picking up some cedar but it really is in the background of a very prominent berry or cherry sweetness. The finish is medium and while the flavor is full the strength is mild thus far. Either this is something I've never had or I contracted a Biden super strain of covid that enhances the taste buds to a euphoric, opel state. The ash is uniformly light grey and splitting into a perfect Y.

2nd
The wrapper is super thin and has bulged and flaked at the foot. The cherry has eased off a decent bit but fruity sweetness is still prominent. Cedar has grown and the finish has lengthened some and tastes of sweet tobacco. The smoke production isn't unacceptable but hasn't improved. The burn is good and the split wrapper isn't causing any problems on either end. The ah has been strong for 2.5 inches at a time. It's a lovely spring day here and this cigar at times tastes like one of my favorite summer desserts: angel food cake with strawberries and homemade whipped cream. Im surprised to get this mitch flavor from a cigar whose foot and cold draw were a total air bomb. However, it's almost as if my diabetic neighbor came to dinner so rather than using sugar to make the whipped cream we used stevia. The cigar is flavorful but not strong and I think it would be perfect for someone who is new to cigars.

3rd
Im trying to parse out what im tasting here aside from the sweetness and I think im picking up a little hay that has been developing and a sprinkle of cayenne. The fruit is there but im going to say that maple syrup seems to be coming to the forefront which I like better. This final third is definitely more to my liking and seems less artificial. If this is low end then it's very interesting and probably a great value for anyone who likes a sweet cigar. Im at an hour and eighteen minutes and with 2 inches left the stick is starting to smoke a little hot. The ash is over 3 inches long and taking a 45 degree turn so im going to tap it off. I touch up the burn for the final run and the smoke finally picks up to slightly above average. The baking spice is back and I'll put the cigar firmly in the medium category (at least by my standards.)

Jake, great cigar selections. I think im ready to be embarrassed with my final tally.

Final guesses (drum roll)

#1 something by Roma craft and mid range
#2 pam64 Maduro (high end)
#3 I'm going to risk embarrassment and say it's a Dominican hybrid that I've never had before and was a lower end cigar that out performs its price range and is a good option for someone who likes a very sweet cigar

#1 pepin blue (original) toro
#2 padron family reserve no 45 maduro
#3 puros huerfanos by drew estates.

The fact # 3 didn’t put out a lot of smoke sucks. It must have been a dud. They’re usually more than plentiful with smoke.

I honestly thought I might have been able to trick you with that one. I smoke them a fair amount. Usually the smoke output is absurd.

Good guesses gummy. Glad you enjoyed them. I sent you another pepin blue in corona. I like that cigar very well

I've never had a family reserve and almost wrote that I could be smoking one on #2 but wasn't sure. For those of you who have had a bunch of them do you find them similar to the standard anniversaries? I find most padrons to be pretty similar but haven't had any family reserves until the other day.

Clintcigar's box landed sometime today. Just saw it on my desk in the basement now. Like most of us, this boy can't count. But he really can't count. The fiver is a tenner....

Nothing in the rest is anything I've had before.

Flores y Rodriguez Connecticut valley reserve with a blue label
Frat Ello gigantic cigar of some sort.
SLR natural broadleaf
La Herencia oscuro
Balmoral oscuro
Flores y Rodriguez Connecticut valley reserve with a red label
El Borracho something.

None of these have crossed my path, so I'm assuming the blinds are gonna be firsts too.

Starting on number 1. A short robusto, dark in color but not quite black. Clearly visible seams and veiny leaves. I prefer coronas and short robs so this should be right up my alley. Live posting the review on my phone in the garage. Will edit the post many times.

Pretty strong hay aroma precut.

Cold draw is pretty flat. A little hay/barnyard but not much.

First light very mild, but a harsh bite on retrohale. Not peppery, more just burnt wood. Smells of sweet light wood. Flavor is dry, mild, sweet and fleeting. I've not had this one before.

Ash is very loose and flakey. Flavor is getting richer. Reminds me of a LA Palina black label. Had one of those walking a golf course in Florida and I'm getting memories of that.

Flavor is still pretty barnyard/ hay and overall dry. Less harshness though, usually these flavors are accompanied by hot and harsh. So far it's relatively smooth, but quite dry/astringent.

Seems the prelight draw and the inch-in draw taste pretty similar. It's not bad, I'm gonna peg this one as the yard gar or maybe midrange. Nothing interesting happening as it burns down. But the burn line is razor sharp. Construction has me leaning to mid range. Flavor keeping me on the lower end. It's a one note smoke, I'm about halfway.

Just past halfway and it's changed. I'm really liking this now. Much less dry, more rich. Smoke production is minimal, not in line with the flavor. Lots of dark flavors nothing offensive. Almost fruity, but still kinda dry.

In the final inch its gone a little sour and more horse chit vs hay. I'm putting it down now.

It changed gears once, didn't have the first/second/third. Imma peg no1 as low-mid for now. Will place the peg more appropriately after the others. It was pretty one dimensional, well constructed, and inoffensive.

Imma do #2 tonight. Another robusto dark brown. Smells like hay and raisins. Jagged single cap. Wrappers got some veins but no tooth. Cold draw is sweet raisins. This might be a RB Genesis.

First light lots of woody flavor. Picking up some of the sweet raisin on the finish. A bit of pepper on retrohale but it's got a creaminess that I absolutely love. Cigars that coat the mouth like this are my favorite. It's like the insides of a Cadbury egg.

An inch in and its still tasting like a confectioners cigar. The burn line is razor sharp but the ash is splitting outward. Tons of smoke coming off the foot while resting. But the wrapper doesn't look oily enough for that. There's a slight sheen ahead of the burn line, but not sweating oil like a DE product.

Loads of sweet dark flavor like the innards of a fig Newton.

I'm still thinking this is an OR Genesis or a Tuxedo. Been a while since I've had either but the flavor vs appearance puts them in the running.

I've been out here for an hour and just hit the last 2". It's starting to get sour. Might be rushing it as I've grown a bit bored. I enjoyed this one too.

I'm gonna say this one's a low end ringer. Appearance isn't above entry level, but flavor and performance are mid-high. May change my mind after #3.

I smoked #1 blind cigar (April 9)

4 7/8" in by 54

It looks like a sun grown wrapper. Looks like Undercrown Sun Grown

Clod draw
Little tight - cream, leather, nut

First 1/3
Pepper / cream / leather/ nut / toasted taste
Even burn - tightly wrapped - then started burning uneven

This taste like an Undercrown Sun Grown

Second 1/3
Little pepper / big leather taste / nut
The burn evened out

Last 1/3
Cream/ leather/ nut
Even burn

The cigar producted good smoke

It was smooth and good cigar. This should be the mid range cigar.

Blind cigar #2

5x50 robusto light splotchy brown wrapper with a double cap, light glue markings where the band used to be. Almost no veins and barely visible seams. Preflight draw is sourdough and cinnamon. Paired with a Edmond’s Oast Brewing Bound By Time IPA and my Cake Pandora station.

1/3rd : like a salty graham cracker almost zero pepper, it’s very interesting and I love it except it has a weird oaky/pencil eraser finish. Beer is excellent. Burn is wavy and the ash is silver grey with black accents. It’s burning fast and that weird note is beginning to take over the salty graham cracker. Tastes like a Nicaraguan with an Ecuadorian grown wrapper.

2/3rd : no major changes, I miss how this started. The ash is getting stronger by the minute not helping my optimism. The beer is really good! If I’d have paid for this cigar I would have stopped by now to light something else.

3/3rd : some sweetness coming back but no other positive improvements and my taste buds feel shot. Feeling a bit of nicotine sneak in. Close to 2” left and I’m feeling defeated. This tastes like someone tried way to hard to blend something “cubanesque”. Got it to an inch and a half and I’m done.

Guess? Budget cigar. Brand? No clue....really. I’m assuming I’ve never had one before because I don’t remember anything like it. It started really good. But from there not so much.

Review#3

The last time I was with a cigar.

She was nude when she came to me. I'm glad. She had beautiful, smooth, dark skin. No visible veins. A square-ish body, but I like that. I think she was Dominican.

I knew she was out of my league as soon as I saw her, but I didn't care. She was mine for a while.

The smell of her foot reminded me of the chewing tobacco at an old country store surviving from the 1940s, the kind with lead paint and a paper calendar from the local drug store on the wall.

I put my mouth on her and breathed her in. At first she tasted like pepper, but that went away quickly. She was smooth and silky. Never harsh.

Although she looked great, beautiful, classy, sophisticated, and performed admirably, we really just didn't click. I don't think it was her fault. She was just too subtle for me. Too sophisticated. I'm a complex guy with simple tastes. It's a shame. It's almost as if part of me knew the whole time that I wasn't good enough for her.

(I thought her ash was a little soft, but I wasn't going to tell her that. Now that we're not together anymore, I don't care.)

So, that's my take on the three mystery cigars.
#1 - Honduran yardgar
#2 - Mid-level cigar - Nicaraguan, Dominican (and maybe some Peruvian, help me out here)
#3 - More expensive cigar - Dominican

That's the final verdict.

And I'm not hedging, BUT, it was a close call for me between 2 and 3. I liked #2 the best. It was more to my taste, and I thought more complex, more interesting. The appearance and subtly of #3 made me think it was probably the more expensive cigar.

Now Ron can reveal that I don't know Jackchit about cigars.Blushing

Plebian Palate Reviews – Vol II: The Musical

Mystery Cigar #2 (to the tune of Nothing Else Matters)

Wrapper’s smooth, with an oily sheen
Reddish brown, the veins barely seen
Six by fifty-four is hardly lean
This smoke is a toro

Ash is dark and a bit flaky
Knocked it off quick for crotch safety
Burn line’s good, if a little wavy
There’s no need to touch up

Pepper at start, but not throughout
Sweetness comes through, I have no doubt
The pepper then fades and I want to pout
And then there’s some raisin

Didn’t think there’d be some cream
Nor the taste so buttery
But it is

Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
Da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da
(^that was a guitar solo^)

Hints of pipe leaf persist in nose
Carbonated feel on tongue it grows
Pepper returns. My joy it shows
This cigar is intriguing

What this is don’t have a clue
Hope that Google tells me true
Durango?
(^haven’t had one and am staking a lot on the pipe tobacco whiffs I was getting)

Tentative Billboard Ranking: Premium Cigar
An interesting alternative tune with a funky beat

I've not had any of the banded cigars. They've got some age on em all. None short of a year. Probably more but I don't keep track. The CH was labeled by me as a 2016 acquisition but I don't know what it is.. The viaje could be 2012. I had it labeled 2014, when I got it in a trade.

Smoked number three in the dark last night so I’m breaking format here....

It was a very well constructed cigar, extremely firm, preflight was almost nothing flavor wise. Upon lighting it seemed familiar, it tasted like an LFD Cabinet but not an Oscuro. Great slightly sweet tobacco with raisin and molasses. I got 3/4 through this just like this....then on the last part I completely thought I was wrong, at this point it tasted like a Don Carlos but stronger. So now I’m totally confused.

This was a great cigar, I would smoke this again any time, really enjoyed this and it paired nicely with a few fingers of Old Forester 1920.

My official guess? I’m sticking with LFD Cabinet. Thanks Marcus enjoyed this, even the 2nd one was fun even though it kicked my azz.

No 3.

Pretty drunk at 2am. Probably not ideal butt fuggit.

Theres definitely a theme across the three cigars. They all have the same pre light aroma and cold draw. This one is especially funky barnyard/ hay, but could just be the drunky munchys heightening my taste/smell.

Smooth double cap. Visible seams but the leaf veins realign. Double wrapper? Color is uneven but the roll is tight and straight.

First light very mild very sweet. Nice little tickle of a pepper bite on retrohale. Sweet pecan and walnut with some cream are flooding in. I've not smoked an inch of this and I'm calling it high end. This is so good.

Not very smokey, wrapper is dry but doesn't dry my mouth. Sweet woody/nutty flavor right up front with a long creamy finish. 1 inch. Still sticking with high end. Sometimes I forget how good a cigar can be. Even high end smokes, when I go in knowing what they are I think it distorts the experience. I love these blind reviews. Plus it gives me an excuse to smoke 3 cigars in a week.

Burn line is uneven but ash is solid and dark. First tap on the ashtray so it don't go on my shirt. Ramping up the sweetness and legs. This just keeps going. I'm worried it'll go out between draws. Each pull just goes on and on.

1 hour in. I'm falling asleep in my recliner. About halfway but I can't do hour plus cigars so I'm calling it. #3 high end and it was delicious. Zero faults

After a long weekend at the lake with little rest, those fish wore me out,it's time for the big reveal. But first let me preface this by saying I am disappointed in Cigar #1,my second box of these were 50/50 plugged but the good ones were phenominal to say the least. My first box I think I found maybe 2-3 plugged sticks and I am now down to one,you got one of my last two sticks from my first box............. and I had such high hopes.Well all that being said it is time

#1 HDM Le Hoyo Du Dauphin (Jun 01)
#2 Tattoo (Aug 16)
#3 Alec Bradley Post Embargo (Nov 19)...................one of the only AB sticks I really dig

I do hope I found your sweet spot with some of the stragglers

Damn! I suck at this.

Thanks so much though. It was fun.

I swear I had thoughts about #1 being an old cuban, based on appearance (and being plugged) but I quickly set those thoughts aside.

Nice reviews Dan! Here is the reveal:

1. - JSK Tyrannical Buc Maduro - mid
2. - La Aurora 100 Años Maduro - premium
3. - Padilla Fumas Maduro - low

The Padilla had the most age on it since I've had them. Around 1.5yrs. They are deceiving. BigGrin

La Aurora can sometimes be rustic looking, especially the maduros that aren’t perfectos.

Blind #2 from RMAN443

5.5" x 46 (smoked 4/11)
Drank Yuengling Light with the cigar

It looked like a Habano wrapper. Cuban looking
V-cut / cold draw - little tight / cream / nut

First 1/3 - cashew/ cream / pepper / toothy
Burn was uneven with ok draw
Smoke was light

Second 1/3 - cream / earthly leather / oak / nut
Burn evened out
Smoke was better

Third 1/3 - cream / little leather / nut / toast
Even burn
Thick smoke and great draw

Finished smooth

I think it was a Cuban (Cohiba maybe)

blind review #1 from danmdevries

6x52 toro, darker wrapper but not quite maduro dark.

Firm roll, nice firm draw, some veins and smooth seams

1/3
Cocoa sweetness, some wood and leather. Lingering pepper, not creamy, a little dry smoke. medium+ body, mild-medium strength
a litte more pepper, i would say red pepper. Mineral flavor comes in, ash is stacking like dimes, gray/black color, perfect burn
long finish, sweetness and pepper stays on tongue
sweetness is more like sweet tea now, some charred oak notes
2/3
red pepper has ramped up some, razor sharp burn, ash still stacking like dimes, still lingering pepper and sweet tea on finish, some leather and mineral flavors
Medium+ strengh, moving toward medium-full body, got some metallic mineral taste. (the metallic taste could be due to my fasting)
I got wood on retro but I get that with almost all sticks, some wood on finish now, smoke is slightly creamy now, ash just dropped for first time
pepper has ramped up a bit more but not too strong
getting toward the end of 2nd, small burn correction. I'm gussing this is an LFD at this point. Maybe Dominican-Nicaraguan blend
3/3
strength ramped up to around medium-full, close to medium-full on body, some charred oak coming back in, sweeteness tamed down, pepper ramping up
still long finish, some metallic mineral flavor, construction pretty much flawless, sweetness died down more, got some leather coming in
prob bumping full body now, medium-full strength
pepper ramped up a good bit now, strength is bumping full for me now on empty stomach, metallic, mineral, earth notes with some leather
leather stonger now, barely dectectable sweetness, pepper going strong
still almost flawless burn, only 2 minor touch ups needed, stil have some sweet tea and metallic on the finish, ash fell for 2nd time

Total burn time 1hr 20min

This was a pretty damn good smoke, a little one dimensinal to me but the flavors were good. I'm guessing this is the mid range smoke.
Final guess: LFD Coronado

Blind Tasting #3

Pre-Light:
About 6” by 46 Corona Gordo. Light brown wrapper with spindly veins. Well packed, but not too tight. Notes of stone fruit on the foot.

First Third:
Spice right off the bat, gave a nice tingle in the nostrils. I’m picking up notes of hay/earth and a little bit of floral on the finish. Burn is not the straightest I’ve seen, but doesn’t require a touch up.. yet?

Second Third:
Burn has straightened out. Medium bodied. Still prevalent notes of hay/earth. Ash is a dark gray.

Final Third:
Draw is getting pretty tight at this point. Flavors are a little muted with not much development. A little bit of harshness has cropped up.

Final Impression:
I enjoyed this smoke, however it kind of fizzled out at the end. While it didn’t smoke like a yard gar, it was the least impressive as far as flavor goes of the three.

This was a tough one as none of the cigars seemed like yard gars, and I enjoyed all three. If I had to guess, I would say #1 is the premium #2 is the middle and #3 is the yard gar. That being said I’m not confident I. These guess and I feel like they could be completely wrong. Will open the envelope tonight or tomorrow and post the results. Thanks for 3 great smokes and snacks Sob. Really enjoyed them all.

Excellent reviews, Jason! I'm happy you enjoyed the smokes.

In the envelope you'll find labels for:
#1 - Nomad Signature - premium
#2 - Fallen Angel - Yard gar (though a good yard gar IMO)
#3 - Warped Futuro - Mid range

I'm actually a little concerned myself. Having smoked the 3rd from you finally, I'm second guessing some of my tentative guesses. Go with the gut, or overthink my way into a strikeout? Think

Ah 1/3 I’ll take 33%. That was a tough one! I really enjoyed the challenge and all three smokes! Thanks again for sharing the Chief Cool Arrow, I didn’t think I’d be able to try one of these sticks. Interested to read your final review and see your results!
