Interesting commentary by Will. I don't know whether to be optimistic over his assessment or frightened. I think he misses a significant aspect of America by casting it as a balance scale either tilted one way or another in the extreme. If national elections are any measure, the scale is far more balanced than Will is portraying it as being here. America is more like a bunch of countries than one in some respects. Certainly the coasts have different political sentiments, on average, than the south and midwest. Averaging all the spread out regions into one, then applying an average can be misleading. Will, like many commentators makes the mistake of not specifying in enough detail what Joe and Jane Public are supposed to be liberal or conservative on: fiscal, constitutional, judicial, religious, defense. Liberal & conservative, like many generalities, break down upon application to particulars. If anyone ever asserts a thing or a person is "conservative," "good," "liberal," etc., one must ask, what do they seek to "conserve"? what do they seek to "liberate"? I think Will is painting in too broad of strokes here, leaving huge gaps of ambiguity, although there is certainly a lot of historical validity in some of what he says.

Any mistakes made by the author are dwarfed by the over-generalizations and stereotyping done by the liberal establishment. Read the boards on here, just as an example. If you are a Conservative/Republican, you are assumed to be inconsiderate of the poor, bent on forcing your own religeous beliefs down everyones throat, and of less than average intelligence. What facinates (and nauseates) me, is the extremes to which the Liberal/Democrat establishment is carrying the matters to in this election. We have a slam-dunk case for CBS being wildly biased at best (in an interview with George Kelloughs widow, they mentioned they did an interview with Bush's former roomate, but weren't going to use it because it was "too pro-Bush"!) and an outright arm of the Public Affairs Office of the Democratic National Committee at worst! (depending on the credence placed upon reported conversations between the head of CBS, Kerry's campaign manager, and the source of the forged documents) Funny how all the news about that episode has died down, even in competing(?) media outlets. Let something happen that embarrasses the Bush White House, and it'll never get off the front page! (Abu Ghareb, HOW many days on the NY Times front page?)(casualty counts every day, but any stories about the medical programs our troops are involved in, schools being painted, rebuilt, reopened? not one!) People are arrested for vandalizing Bush/Cheney signs in supporters yards, and in response the Democrats say, W"ell ours are being vandalized too, we just didn't report it". Sure, why not, they've reported enough that wasn't true, why miss something that actually happened? Shots fired at Republican canpaign offices in Knoxville TN. These are supposed to be the ones who will SAVE the country? Sounds like Brownshirts to me!

Yo Rick:

If speaking the truth about GW as I do is biased, well then I'm guilty as charged.

I feel very strongly that once kerry is soundly defeated that will be the beginning of the end of the democratic party as we know it. I feel that once the democratic party breaks up, half will venture out to hollyweird to search out acting positions and the other half will look for busboy jobs in your better New York restaurants. JMHO

JonR,
You Wrote?? "If speaking the truth about GW as I do is biased, well then I'm guilty as charged."
I guess you are the only person who "Knows" the truth about this president. The only "Truth" that I know about this president, is that he Lies, alot. His administration, is cloaked in secrecy, and constantly takes his opponents words out of context, to use against him.
As far as Modern Democrats being Liberal. The modern Republicans, are some of the most Liberal, on fiscal issues of any administration in the last 20 years. I have left the Republican party, for the Libertarian party, as I have seen the spending habits of the Republicans are more liberal than the democrats.

Dave, I'm with you. Reps and Dems are not far apart. They are like two sides of the same coin shouting at each other. They are both beholden to their chosen special interests, and both want to exert control over the populace in their own special ways.

I realized years ago that the Libertarian ideas made the most sense to me.

Wow,
Nobody here wants to challenge my assertian that the modern Republican party has liberal spending habits?
Back when I was a young man I believed as I was taught that Democrats would tax and spend this great nation into the poorhouse. I rejoiced when the Republicans gained control of the Presidencey and both houses of the legislative branch. They have spent way more than the democrats, but have borrowed the money, hence the deficit, rather than increase the income, through raising taxes, have actually lowered taxes, while increasing spending. That means with the accrueing interest, that taxes will have to be raised higher, to keep up.
Shame on the Republicans.
They finally gain control, and sell their supporters, and their kids down the river.
