For years, the 82nd Avenue of the Roses parade has kicked off Portland’s annual Rose Festival and marked beginning of the Oregon city’s parade season.

But after a threatening email was sent to parade organizers - singling out members of the Multnomah County Republican Party (MCRP) who were planning to take part – officials have decided to cancel the family-friendly procession in an effort to avoid any clashes between protesters and marchers.

“This would have been the 11th year of the parade. This is culturally enriched community that has grown very diverse over the years,” Rick Jarvis, a spokesman for the Rose Festival Foundation, told Fox News. “The association has worked very hard to get everyone together in one common are and the parade helped served in that function.”

Local media reported that the email was sent from "[email protected]," and said that if members of the MCRP marched on Saturday they planned to have “two hundred or more people rush into the parade into the middle and drag and push them out.”

“You have seen how much power we have downtown and that the police cannot stop us from shutting down roads so please consider your decision wisely,” the anonymous email said, in reference to the violent riots that broke out in Portland after the 2016 presidential election, reported the Oregonian. “This is non-negotiable.”

While the author of the email did not mention any group or particular affiliation, the message did include links to two different Facebook pages set up for counter-protests; one by Direct Action Alliance and the other from Oregon Students Empowered.

Direct Action Alliance has shut down its counter-protest since the parade was cancelled and said that a different event will be held but they will not organize it. Jacob Bureros, an organizer with the Direct Action Alliance, told the Oregonian that he is sad to hear the news that the parade was cancelled.

"We are disappointed that the parade was canceled," he said. "We're members of this community and this is an awesome parade."

I'm glad to see laws in place limiting where they can be and it never hurts my feelings when the get beat up or otherwise harassed in some way........BUT........Gaddamit, this is America. We have Freedom of Speech. We do NOT have freedom from being offended nor do we have freedom from repercussions of things we might say. I respect their right to do what they do. I also respect that they will likely be $hitstomped for doing it.

I do not patronize any Berkeley business, irrespective of however much I might otherwise like to do so ... there are, for example, any number of good restaurants there who are having to get along without my patronage and I have shared my feelings with others who might agree with my thinking ... insignificant, you might say, and you'd be right, but it's all I have control over and I have chosen to boycott them ... the sanctuary city bulls*t might cause me to expand my parameters ... that could be a bit problematic for me, but hey ...

Didn't say that. My point is that you have the right to Free speech however disagreeable it may. You are NOT free from any repercussions of that speech. Furthermore, if you were given a free pass to ass kick one of those ****heels at the funeral of a soldier and you say you wouldn't do it, I would question your word at that point.

A) "if you were given a free pass" to my way of thinking means you'd not be prosecuted for battery ...

B) But, if those a$$wipes were to show up at the funeral of someone I cared about, I'd risk it ... though, at my age, I'd not be getting a pass for doing serious injury to myself in the process ...

Context is everything.
Those westboro deekwads certainly have the right to think like they do. And to say what they say. But their methods are intended to incite disruptive behavior (at best) and should absolutely be banned or otherwise dealt with.

What they say is disgusting, but protected.
How (when and where) they say it needs to be outlawed.

I have very mixed feelings about what is comfortable/sensible vs rights with teeth. I am more worried when hate groups go underground. On some level, I'd like to have a Nazi Cable Network!
