2018 First Annual GOM Tuna Charter???

Was wondering if there is any interest in a Yellow Fin Tuna or other type of fishing charter out of Venice, LA. During late Jan through February large yellow fin tuna run in the Gulf of Mexico. During these months you can expect to catch plenty of 70-120 pounders. On a good day you'll also see a few 150-200 ponders landed.

Cold weather really isn't a concern since we don't have a winter down here, just a few cold snaps.

If not a winter trip, there are other seasons as well. Depending on the time of year, one catch:
Open Water:
Mahi Mahi
Marlin
Wahoo
Blue, Black & Yellowfin Tuna
Spanish & King Mackerel
Swordfish
Triple Tail

Bottom Fishing Around Oil Rigs:
Red, Mangrove and Lane Snapper
Vermilion Snapper (not really a snapper, but very tasty)
Cobia, actually a top water fish that hangs around the offshore oil platforms.
Red & Gag Grouper
Amberjacks & Jack Crevelle (pound for pound the hardest fighting fish you'll ever hook)
Gray Triggerfish

Comments??

Edit 1:
Coon Pop Charters does a 6 person offshore trip for $2500 all inclusive except food & drink. He is out of Grande Isle, instead of Venice. But he fishes the same area. I have fished with him at least a dozen times. We caught limits on all, but 1 trip. That was an inshore trip in crappy weather. Though we didn't catch specks that day, we caught a limit of huge 30+# redfish (red drum).

He owns the Tradewinds in Grande Isle. They have a restaurant & bar. We have to smoke on the porch though because you can't smoke in bars in Louisiana. He also has rooms for rent. $100 per night and they sleep six people.

Sounds like fun. I fished Venice a couple years ago, nearly froze my butt off but did catch some nice yellos. This year has been pretty good down here (South TX) so far, quite a few Makos also.

Where in south Tx? I'm in Denham Springs just east of Baton Rouge.

I will admit though, I'm not much of a fisherman. So if this is one of those "everyone has to know what they're doing" type trips I'd sink the boat. Lol

We fish out of Port Aransas, my son has a boat there. I run the boat most of the time on two day trips. We do some trolling, deep dropping for swords and night fishing for tuna.

You'll be fine. Capt. Lance "Coon Pop" Schouest is a really great guy. He's been a charter captain since the 70's. He's always had lots of patience. He's also one of the top tarpon guides in the GOM. We'll fish with him or his son Lil Coon. Both are excellent charter captains. Coon fishes from. 31' Fountian, Lil Coon has a 34' Venture.

Up here in Austin. Relocated freshwater fisherman from Tennessee so the whole Texas fishing has me off a bit. Really like Port A but don't know when, where to fish down there.

Certainly a possibility - especially for 2018. Keep me in mind if this moves forward. I am a short day's drive away.

Unfortunately we're not blessed with the smoothest of gulf waters down here most of the time. Compounded with the long (150 mi) offshore runs means we have to pick our days carefully if we don't want to get beat up too bad. That's also why we almost always do two day trips. The fish are there all year but the weather often won't cooperate.

LA has lots of protected (from wind) water and gazillions of oil platforms. Even on bad days good fishing can be found somewhere. Usually less wind as well.

Sounds like fun: rent a room and herf the night before, go fishing the next day, cook up some fresh fish (or have Coon Pop's restaurant cook it for us) when we get back, herf, then get some sleep before heading home the following morning...I'm in!

Is the room rate per room or per person?

Per room Al, split 6 ways. About 1-1/2 hours from New Orleans. 2 1/2 from Baton Rouge. New Orleans is prolly cheaper to fly into.

I could easily pickup 3 ppl from the airport. I've got an F150 Super Crew Lariat 4x4. If Victor comes down he can ride in the middle in the back seat, as long as he keeps his hands to himself.
