The most attention getting time was at a speech at the Memorial Wall, after a visit at CIA headquarters in Langley, a "hallowed ground" honoring the men and women who have died in the line of duty doing intelligence work. Google "inauguration crowd size" for a full list of times Trump has brought it up, if you're interested.
It's important to some people because he seems to be wasting a lot of time and energy on something so trivial, and it has actually taken the focus off of stuff that he could've used to enhance his perception. That seems to be his motivation, to inflate his image. He should just let it drop.
The cynics might say that it is more than wasting time. They might even say that this was actually subtler messaging. Message to the Park Service and Interior Dept to toe the line, be loyal to a fault. Message to Spicer and other main staff that defending his 'honor' and priorities is job no. 1. "Facts are interpretable. Interpret them MY way...and fast." Get out in front, loud and often and the accolytes, sycophants, and such will follow...faith over fact
