Congress had initially approved the Palestinian funding in budget years 2015 and 2016, but at least two GOP lawmakers — Ed Royce of California, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Kay Granger of Texas, who sits on the House Appropriations Committee — had placed holds on it over moves the Palestinian Authority had taken to seek membership in international organizations. Congressional holds are generally respected by the executive branch but are not legally binding after funds have been allocated.

The Obama administration had for some time been pressing for the release of the money for the Palestinian Authority, which comes from the U.S. Agency for International Development and is to be used for humanitarian aid in the West Bank and Gaza, to support political and security reforms as well as help prepare for good governance and the rule of law in a future Palestinian state, according to the notification sent to Congress.

It was just a cut and paste, it's not my words. I just wondered why too.

Much is made of the messaging that israel has no right to exist, but it really is the same message the other direction too (and actions). Until both sides move from that message there will be no peace. The same is true in our politics. As long as the other side is the devil not to be dealt with there can be no compromise. Staking out either side exclusively means not wanting peace in my mind.

Where is le HD when we need him. Reading his opinion on the matter softened my stance a bit. While not in total agreement with him, his thoughts were educated and well thought out. Maybe wrong at times but still worthy of debate.

One good thing is that none of the money will be spent for bombs, rockets or training suicide bombers.

I sense sarcasm. It's also good none of our money is spent to displace families and build settlements using military force if necessary. It's a vicious cycle.

They are the authority in the Arab side of the West Bank. The U.S. is trying to negotiate a lasting peace between them and Israel. In the past, unilateral negotiations backed by military force made the goal of peace impossible, so since the 70's(?)the U.S. has tried to appear neutral, or at least switch tactics from sticks to carrots...

We've been paying for peace all over the world, since the end of WWII...kinda why you spent some time in the Philippines (thanks for your service)...looks like Trump wants to put an end to it...lotsa hand-wringing among supporters of pay for peace...

LHD is probably just getting home from his birthday vacation, he certainly is thoughtful in his stance on this. I'm probably bout 90% with you here teedub.

I think most people's apprehension with this is what check is in place to ensure that is spent where intended. If it's for what it's claimed it's hard to argue.
