Self-assigned. I prefer initiative with the occasional beat down over hanging back and watching. Speeds up the learning curve.

Defs not trying to run it. Just quicker on the trigger than some of the vets in the earlier time zones (or with earlier bedtimes).

"Cranking" may be the best thing I see on the inter-webs today. Wonder if the new PC Navy is either gonna outlaw it or give it some new, sensitive name.

Many years ago, Bur...."Food Service Attendants"...."FSA", for short is OK, also....'Crank' was outlawed some 15 years ago...maybe more, IIRC

Oops, can you tell how long ago my one surface tour was on a ship before getting to go EOD? Heck, I haven't even ridden a ship as a "guest" since late 2001.

Yep... back in 19 hundred and eighty eight... when I was but a wee lad of 18... I was mess crankin'. Some years later, as Dave said, they started calling mess cranks FSA's.

Shellback initiation was severely tamed, then all but outlawed.

Chief's initiation was severely tamed and then called "transition".

Now the ratings are gone.

The ol' gray mare just ain't what she used to be.
