For rock artists or groups with at least two full length albums, what’s your favorite debut album?

After much consideration, I’m going with “My Aim Is True” by Elvis Costello. It’s an album we constantly played when I worked in a record store.

I also considered the following:

The Cars
Chicago Transit Authority
Led Zeppelin
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood

How ‘bout you? Think

Wow, tough call here, but off the top of my head I'd say a toss up between Metallica "Kill 'em all" or Guns 'N Roses "Appetite for Destruction"

Kind of a hard pick since there are many flavors of music to pick from but if I had a gun to my head I would say Led Zeppelin.

"Been dazed and confused for so long it's not true."

Way to many to choose from depending on your flavor of music.

Many folks love the guitar (I do too) but I love listening to the percussion. John Bonham, Neil Peart, Keith Moon were the foundation of their bands and inspired many other bands.

But are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful

Jimi Hendrix Experience, debut album. Yeah that's on the list for sure.

It's so hard to pick just one. Way to many to pick from. Lots of genres and styles. Classic rock, heavy metal, alternative, punk, country, western, folk, rap, jazz, hip-hop, classical, blues, funk and so on.

Pick your poison. As long it fits you, who am I to say that your are wrong? But if you like hip hop... you are wrong. (I had to toss out my opinion)..

Strangely enough, my first Hendrix album was “Electric Ladyland” and I played the heck out of it. By the time I got “AYE?”, “Ladyland” was entrenched in my psyche so while “AYE?” is a GREAT debut recording, it’s not in my Top 5.

Hendrix did a ton of great music. He did some covers that where written by others such as Like a Rolling Stone, All Along The Watchtower. Some great albums from him. Live stuff like Live at Winterland, Live at Monterey. Studio out takes and music like Radio One. Then you got his performance at Woodstock doing and the Nation Anthem. Some say it was a not the way you play the Star Spangled Banner but I thought, and still think, it was cool.

Shoot, I wasn't even born yet when he played it. He died about a year after I was born.,, I didn't have any part of his death no matter what Jonsie says.

This was a purdy good one too:

I’mma so old I actually saw Jimi live. It was his last American show so a bit historical.

I'm surprised Boston hasn't been mentioned.

Not a bad song on that album and if you believe the story behind it, Tom Scholz pretty much did everything in his basement and the demo was pretty much released as it was.

Van Halen - Self-Titled.

Yeah, I said it.

Now, go back to your headphones and listen to Led Zeppelin I and VH I back to back and you'll hear it too.

So you are a Voodoo Child too?

I played the heck out of that one also.

It's nearly impossible to pick just one. So many musical styles and types, it's hard to pick one.

I'd add this to the list, not a favorite but it has a place in history.

You can eliminate a few due to thread title, But even then there's a metric chit ton of sub genres under the rock heading

Is the System of a Down self titled a contender for metal debut album? Longshot maybe, but there's a lot of heavy hitters out there. However, one of the best nu-metal debuts? Without a doubt and one I played to death at the time

NiN - Pretty Hate Machine possibly the best industrial debut ever, but I don't know that I'd put it up against LZ 1.

So a list is hard and the lineup of such would change with mood. I love the two listed above and they make their rotation through my favorites consideration.

And let's not forget the Who - My Generation as well as the first Sabbath album

The downside of working in a record store - we listened so much to that album BEFORE it became a big hit that by the time the general public “discovered” the group, we were moving onto newer music. However, customers would come into the store and ask to put Boston on while they were shopping. Eventually it would become one of the many albums I would grow sick of ‘cause I was forced to listen to it ad nauseam.

I still remember putting the album on for the first time and the sound that just exploded out of the speakers. It was a great Sunday morning, crank it up LOUD before we opened up the store album. Luckily it never became one of those albums I got sick listening to.

I loved both “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and “Voodoo Chile”.

I may have told this story before but I bought a used copy of “Electric Ladyland” and because I played it so much, at some point, there were more pops and crackles than most of my records. However, as a side benefit to working in a record store, I exchanged my worn-out copy for a fresh one. But I still remember the slight horror of taking out the new records and noticed the difference in the labels from the old one. Was hoping like heck that my manager (…who did all the returns…) wouldn’t look and discover my unauthorized exchange.

It's a toss up for me...loved the The Doors...never thought another first album would impact me like that one...my fave

then a couple years later came Led Zeppelin...a second fave

a couple months later, Chicago Transit Authority...a third fave...

honorable mention would be The Eagles, 1972, but it just wasn't as full of great sounds like the top three...

I agree with MACS...Boston's first album was just as great as my three faves, but by then (1976) I was in a haze at the time, had stopped buying albums and couldn't really appreciate it like the others...I played the three faves over and over and over, wearing out several needles...

I’mma changing my choice. “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” by Derek & the Dominos replaces “My Aim is True” from Elvis Costello. While DntD only released 1 studio album, there are two live albums from the group so they fulfill the parameters.

As far as “LAOALS” goes, I’ve owned 5 copies of it in various forms:

Vinyl
OR Double CD
Remastered Single CD
Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary 3-CD box set
SACD

I don’t play it as often as I used to but still keep a CD copy in my car for whenever I feel like listening to it again.

Was reminded of Joe Jackson's "Look Sharp!" Should have definitely considered that one too.
