Bad, sour taste

I just lit up a Macanudo and with the first puff the thing tasted foul. Either sour, burnt, or ammonia. I can’t exactly put my finger on it but it was God awful and something I never tasted in a stick before.
I guess every once in a while you get a bad one but wow!

Afaik, bad tasting cigars are generally due to poor storage, i.e., too dry for an extended time. Not saying that you stored them incorrectly but depending on where you got it from, there may have been lapses of proper humidification.

I have them in a newly established Tupperdore withe cedar trays, bovedas, and 68% Rh.
I’ve smoke out of this Tupperware recently and no issues. I will try another Macanudo tomorrow

Another possibility is they were a shipped too green and need some time to age a bit

Your answer to every question seems to be to throw cigars away. I’m not sure I understand your point.

Macanudos aren't that bad. I have enjoyed a few. But none lately I will say.

They did all right for me early on, and I'd still probably smoke some of the Inspirados if one was handed to me.

98.2% of us all had a similar journey. Hell, if I tried an LFD Double Ligero too soon in that process, I probably would've thought I didn't like LFDs.

Been smoking for years. We all smoke what we like. Nothing wrong with Macanudos.

Well I met some bad influences fairly early on too that led me down an expensive road. You've seen a couple of them post above

My advice is to let them sit and smoke other stuff for a while. Return to them in a year, and see if they're better.

I bought some MoW Puro Authenticos a while back. Smoked one and was disappointed. I let 'em sit for a while, and eight months later, they were much better. A year later, better still. I smoked one the night before last, and thought it was pretty excellent. And, I like that I only paid about $2.50 a piece for them.

I've had numerous similar experiences. They could be too green, weren't store properly for a while, etc. Give 'em time.

Nitrogen. Either too young or another period of fermentation.

Or just bad tobacco, only Macanudo If smoke is a Vintage 97 maduro.

It was a vaguely chemical taste so yeah Nitrogen sounds likely. Thanks much!

My guess would be ammonia. Your cigars are too wet and/or pretty young.

Nitrogen, in and of it's self, is tasteless. 78% of the air we breathe is nitrogen and air is pretty tasteless.

As for Mancanudo, this is what started my journey into this craziness of enjoying a real cigar. Was at a bachelor party in a pool hall where the best man handed out cigars of a few different types. Mac is an easy find, relatively inexpensive, and mainstream so it works for most folks who are both new and seasoned. If I remember correctly I selected a Macanudo Maduro Prince Phillip.

Would I buy some again? Prolly not as my preference has developed more to the fuller bodied stuff but I wouldn't turn one down as giveaway.

In the first few months of getting into premium cigars, HOnizuka gifted me a Cafe Hyde Park...and I liked it! But I was into my "Bid on everything Fuente" phase so never got around to getting any Macs. Eventually I forgot about them.

There are expensive cigars that do better with age. Age them for 6 months then try them again. I usually smoke 1 rott and then rest for a few months.

Thanks all. I think I got one that was just too young. The others from that same 5 or 10 pack have been just fine.
I appreciate all the help and Happy Holidays to you all!

I haven't smoked a Mac in several years. Not impressed with them, but I have picked up a few in the past year or so and plan on letting them sit a bit more before burning them.

Tony track down a 97 maduro, not too expensive and really good.
