Im contemplating getting some sort of smoke eater/air cleaner in order to smoke in the basement over the winter and or when watching games. Does anyone have anything they like or that works well? I just started looking into this and dont know a whole lot about these units so any help would be appreciated.

How about an exhaust fan, like the ones they put into a bathroom, to pull the smoke out of the room through a vent and pushes it outside? I'm thinking of doing that in the "man cave", a converted one car garage.

I have something exactly like this in my man cave. It works alright, but not fantastic. I would love to get a legit air purifier. I feel like they are too expensive though.

Csonka™ Super Air Care Purifier

I've got their automotive units in each of my cars and have had one of the large ones in the house ... fact is, they work and work well ... there are those who don't care for these inasmuch as they generate ozone ... I don't know what the drawbacks are in that regard but have experienced no negative effects to my knowledge in the years I've had and used them ...

(edit) I've got two exhaust fans in my 'cave' ... they help, but don't completely get the job done

How many cubic feet is your man cave, and what size fan did you use, Hank?

(edit: same question for Steve)

My only thing against an exhaust fan is if a powerful fan is running for long periods of time wont it also suck out the warm or cool air as well? Maybe its what you have to give up to clear the smoke.

...and you have to have an opening into the room to allow the air to exchange, replacing what the fan is pulling out...

So it looks like the best solution is to do both. What about noise levels while both systems are running?

I think like 300...not sure though. It is basically a second garage attached to the back of my garage. Same size.

I have a czonka smoker cloaker I got from Cbid. It works, but I rarely use it any more.

I have a quiet cool whole house fan now, so I just turn that on and smoke away. The exhaust port is in the ceiling of my man cave. I don't smoke anywhere else in the house.

How big of a space can this thing clear? Would it clear a full garage area?

The smoker cloaker doesn't clear anything... it just eliminates the smell.

Gotcha.

Is there anything out there that will actually clear the smoke AND clean the air?

Actually, you want a negative pressure in your basement cave vs the rest of the house. This will keep smoke from escaping the basement and getting into the house.

Bathroom fart fans aren't sufficient. they tend to be 30 to 100 CFM. You are likely going to need more ventilation than that.

That's an intake port. Exhaust is either into the attic space or directly out the side of your house.

Glad you were a good MAC, cuz' you suck as a BT (or MM - can't remember what you started as). ;)

That's kind of a low flow rate for a whole house fan. Are you sure about that rating? They do exist in that size, but that would be a very slow air changeover for the size of your house. Your house should have at least at 3500 CFM I would think...

I think it's rated at 1527 cfm. It's the Quiet Cool 1500, and my house is only 1400 sq ft.

I use a 6" Max Fan Pro for my 8x12 cigar cave. On low it moves 291 cfm, medium is 379 cfm and high is 420 cfm. With just for me in there, the low setting works fine- never had anyone else smoke with me in there, but am sure on a higher setting it would be ok.

I have the fresh air supply directly across from the exhaust intake in the room, with my chair set up under the supply side vent. As the smoke rises, it get's caught in the air stream in the room and straight to the intake and out the exhaust pipe.

I used a magnetic flapper vent cover with a screen to prevent animal intrusion. Plus once in awhile I throw a couple moth balls outside on the ground by the vent.

My man cave, a single car garage, is about 250 cubic feet and has a single room ac/heater. The previous owner used it as a home gym. Anybody think that ac/heater will be enough to exhaust the smoke and keep the air fresh? I have my doubts, since it smelled like a locker room...
