Actually, some years ago, back before the days of the internal combustion engine or new forum format, the much-missed Lluvia started a thread that was basically a virtual coffee shop for folks to virtually hang out drinking invisible coffee consisting entirely of electrons. There was an...antagonistic and unwelcoming atmosphere on much, though certainly not all, of the forum at the time, and she wanted a place that was designated “no azzwholes allowed...well, okay, EVERYONE is welcome, but leave any and all azz whole behavior at the door or the bouncer will kick you to the curb” where the drama-averse could find a little peace and civility and noobs could mingle and get to know people without trepidation...as long as everyone played nicely and used their grownup manners.

On the old format, a thread would only show the first 500 posts, so the person to post #500was responsible for starting and naming a new cafe thread.

It has lost a significant amount of momentum since she backed away from cbid - Erica was one of the most genuine, clever, creative, kind, insightful, funny, fierce and caring people I have ever chatted with. Actually, she still is...she just doesn’t hang out here any more.

That being said, could someone hook me up with some peppermint tea, please? Dying of plague, here...

Mmm Hank found us.

Pass me that bottle of JD, I need it now.

Not meaningless Hankie, we come here to unwind, chill, have a smoke and a beverage of your choice.

Sometimes folks will step up and fire up the grill and offer a meal, others tend bar, hang Christmas lights, sponsor an Easter Egg hunt.

It's familiar and comfortable.

Take off your hat and pitch in, you'll have more fun that way.

Hank, this is the one place on the board where people are civil and nice. I'm drinking a nice red cote du Rhone, you are welcome to a glass as is everyone else. I had a rough day at work, knee pain, and am trying to unwind now.

Day four home sick. Bleeeeeecccchhhhhhh. My class is going to be off...the...rails come Monday - they’ve had a different sub every day. They have my favorite sub today, however, which makes me happy and...nervous. She’s the most experienced and knows ALL of these kids, and can handle anything they throw at her, but she has been In another class all week. Moving her on the last day makes me think that my kids may have tried to eat one or more the previous subs.

Hank, you’re in luck -the only oolong I even HAVE is looseleaf! Don’t let it over-steep - it gets bite-y. I also have a wonderful dragon pearl jasmine, if you’re interested.
Speyside, if you have any more of that vino, I’ll have some. Otherwise, I’ll have a nice toddy...the one that’s mostly bourbon and honey, please!

Hope you get well soon Queenie. Hot toddy coming up! If I can't warm your exterior, I'll try to warm the interior.

BTW: Hank, Queenie is among the most interesting posters on the boards, and keeps the cafe amused with her stories about life in the trenches in a grade school, teen-aged angst in the family, managing a princess, getting along with neighbors, interesting gossip, good reads and eats...all while proving that prose can be stylish, spelt correctly and grammatically precise...

Okay, that’s it...((((swapping BBW vanilla body spray for Crisp Linen Lysol))))
GROUP HUG!!!!!!!

Deb, you and Tank were the second best part of our trip - love you guys❤️!

I’m down for a shot of that Patròn - silver with an orange slice is one of my favorite indulgences!

Feeling worlds better today, Delta - thanks! About time, too...I’ve spent waaayyyyyy too much time alone with my own brain this week. I mean, it wasn’t COMPLETELY unproductive; had a lovely pity party, put together a sign up sheet of people to say nice things at my wake & got the whole business planned out: cremation via bonfire with a marshmallow roast, piñata, taco bar, burned a music playlist for the affair (Frank Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Buffet, Two Cellos, ABBA, Songs of the Humpback Whale...okay, it was just a copy of my road trip playlist. Don’t judge me) etc. I thought a barbecue might be nice, but I was worried that combining it with the smell of my burning flesh would either throw people’s appetites off or INCREASE their appetite...both of which are kind of concerning (the latter somewhat more than the former,) and both of which can cast a pall on what I hope will be a decently festive event. So I’m opting for a taco bar. Anyway, tacos go with the piñata I’m requesting, and if there’s trouble lighting the cremation pyre, any decent hot sauce can be used as an accelerant. Plus, every time people smell cilantro, they’ll remember me...which is oddly appropriate, given that cilantro is such a polarizing condiment.

I also had time to do a little linguistic musing. Have you ever really considered the word “phlegm”? When you say it, it doesn’t sound like the right word. But, when you WRITE it or see it in print, suddenly it sounds EXACTLY like the substance it represents. It has six letters, only one of which is a vowel - I’d suspect it of being Welsh, if I didn’t know it was Latin borrowed from the Greek. (I was previously unaware that the human body could produce such a ridiculously large volume of the stuff, or that it came in so many interesting colors.)

And THIS is what you get when I 1)run out of crossword puzzles and 2) am under the influence of an inadvisably large dose of sudafed (not the OTC - the kind that you have to provide picture ID, DNA cheek swab, six personal references only two of which can be related to you, and a handwriting sample in your own blood in order to obtain) and a bourbon cough toddy.

I've said it before, but you may have thought I was just being kind...I could read your brand of prose all day long. Is it possible to call one's writings a structured stream of consciousness?

If I read slower than you write, I catch tons of clever phrases (clauses?), but the above writing sample features a bit more of the manic phase of what is now called bipolar...I blame or credit sudafed.

cilantro really is a polarizing condiment, and that may have been my first hint.

I really never planned to go public with this, but I also have pondered the word "phlegm". never investigated its origin, would have accepted Welsh considering that you would have been my source...

sorry for the interruption.

I am glad to hear you are doing better. I had something similar in December. My cough persisted for another week after I felt better. I did think about Bourbon and honey, why waste good Scotch when you have no sense of smell or taste at the time? In the end I went with a silver Tequila and blue agave nectar. I hope you enjoyed the wine, I thought it was quite nice. May I please have a cup of the dragon pearl Jasmine, it sounds quite delicious.

HAAAA...”polar”izing! I see what you did there!
Lol - you should see my sub notes! My preferred sub has requested that I submit them a day in advance so that she has time to read them. The fact that the last edition was seven pages long may have inspired the request 😂

You ARE kind, Frank - and I love ya for it!

Fortunately, bipolar isn’t a concern - Between odd perspectives, chronic irreverence, and serious word-nerdery, my little pea-brain pretty much always works this way. I think it’s just what happens when you give an INtrovert an OUTlet! In person I’m practically ESL. My brain isn’t connected to my mouth - it only communicates with my hands lol.

seven pages! tell the sub to double the usual adderal dose and try again.

every sentence has at least one word play worthy of comment, but I fear losing what's left of the audience so will resist.

Oh, while you were away, I kinda spazzed out about LOL being insincere. Even got a thread to run into double digit posts...but I'm so low tech I'd never be able to find it. HA!

Speyside - yeah...not looking forward to the lingering cough. I’m pretty vertical today and have my appetite mostly back, no fever...but this cough is going to kill me. Trying to be glass-half-full about it and call it a core workout, but I’m pretty fed up hacking like a tuberculosis patient all day. Don’t mind me - I’ll just be over here coughing up a lung.
I’ve had good old influenza B three times now, and this is by far the mildest it has ever been (not saying much, but I’ll take what I can get,) so I’m crossing my fingers for an abbreviated run of the residual cough.

Oh, waiter? While you’re grabbing NapalmMan’s tea, would you bring one for me, too? English Breakfast with a scant spoonful of coconut sugar and a splash of half & half, please.

Tons better already, Thanks Drafter! Speyside nailed it though - the cough hangs on for...e...ver. Blech. I historically get sick once a year, so I figure I get to coast for the next 11 months!
Unfortunately, it also means that it’s not something I handle gracefully, since it’s so far out of my usual (quiet chuckle for Frank.) Kind of the way I respond to being sore after exercise class...LOL!

I’m told that Influenza b only affects humans and seals, though, so I recommend limiting your exposure to fur-bearing aquatic mammals, just to be on the safe side.

Do we have any ice cream? Ice cream sounds really good right now, doesn’t it?
Also, if anyone has snow that they don’t want, please send it our way. This “winter” has been absolute crap so far this year. If we’d had any decently cold days, all the germs would have frozen and died by now...because that’s exactly how pathology works.
