Ban on Cuban cigars, rum lifted: Travelers can now bring them in from anywhere

The Obama administration has lifted a ban on some of Cuba's most sought-after items – cigars and rum.

The White House announcement clears the way for travelers to purchase unlimited quantities of cigars and rum in any country where they are sold, as long as they are designed for personal use, USA Today reported.

Currently, travelers coming back into the U.S. from Cuba are limited to $100 worth of alcohol or tobacco products. Purchasing Cuban-made cigars, rum or other alcohol made in the country over the internet or while in a third country, such as popular travel destination Mexico, is illegal.

That will change Oct. 17.

Restrictions on online ordering and wholesale imports of Cuban cigars and alcohol remain. Anyone bringing in the items for personal use are subject to duties and taxes.

The announcement is part of a wider effort to expand trade with the country following the restoration of U.S.-Cuba relations in 2014.

"The Treasury Department has worked to break down economic barriers in areas such as travel, trade and commerce, banking, and telecommunications. Today's action builds on this progress by enabling more scientific collaboration, grants and scholarships, people-to-people contact, and private sector growth," Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew said.

Other changes include allowing U.S. medical researchers to engage in joint projects with Cuban scientists and opening the possibility of Food and Drug Administration approval of Cuban-made pharmaceuticals.

Victor, his "most transparent administration ever" just got done crippling the domestic cigar industry most likely killing boutique brands and ruining charity work. NOW has begun steps to finalize normalization with Cuba. Their manufacturer's aren't subject to that new 499 pages of beurocracy.

Yeah. If Cuban cigars legally brought back to America in this way truly won't be subject to the FDA's new draconian rules, then this whole situation is Cuba's wet dream.

The federal government will have chopped off the non-Cuban cigar industry at its knees with regulation, while allowing in unlimited amounts of unregulated Cubans via a quick drive or flight to somewhere as close as Canada or Mexico.

Raul Castro couldn't have designed it any better himself. Just, wow.

Victor, no......I'm anti FDA 499 pages of bullschit.

This is OBVIOUSLY not fair market practices. It's clear that his own departments are either clueless, leadership is clueless, or he knows exactly what he's doing. None of which are good IMO.

If this was an intentional plan by the Obama administration to cripple non-Cubans with FDA rules while allowing in Cubans that don't have to follow the FDA rules, this is how you turn their little plan around on them.

Non-Cuban manufacturers merely start selling their wares, completely without regard to the new FDA regulations, at lots of shops in Canada and/or Mexico right along the US border, including lots and lots of post-2007 and brand-new blends and vitolas, completely unaffected by the draconian FDA rules. No applications for approval, no giant warning labels, NOTHING!

They'd get brought in via the VERY SAME loophole that's being opened to allow FDA-regulation-free Cubans to come in.

It's always so fun to use someone's plan AGAINST them. :)

There is an LCdH in Playa del Carmen, about 15 miles away. There is also one on Cozumel Island, and one in Cancun.

As these are Cuban state / Habanos authorized stores, the cigars will be legit, but don't expect any bargains.

Very possible. I'm just saying not to expect gray market internet vendor pricing at an LCdH, even less so at an LCdH located in an area driven primarily by tourism money.

The emperor calls for 30 more days of bread and circuses.

Hurrah hurrah hurrah chants the crowd.

No mention made by obama that Russia is in the early planning stages of a new military base in Cuba.

I've been wondering that for a while. Guess that will all be worked out long before Cubans ever hit retail shpos here.

Inventory dictates price. There will be a run for a bit. Then when $10 doesn't move off the shelf, it will turn into $9. Etc, etc.

So you fuggers quit buying so I can get a deal....;)

This won't be an issue until the embargo is lifted and the direct sale of Cuban goods on US soil is legal.

At which point, probably nothing will happen. There will be cigars with one name that say "Habana" on the band, and other cigars with the same name that don't. Altadis USA owns about 2/3 of the names anyway, their parent company, Altadis SA owns the controlling majority share in Cubatobacco.

Wouldn't even worry about it.

****, I didn't realize that Altadis own all the brands they do. Well that simplify most of the issue.

Thanks for the info TG, now excuse me as I go waste a few hours learning more about parent companies.

Not only that but it appears that much of the current non-cuban brands have rebranded their look to make it even easier to distinguish which ones are cuban and which ones are not.
