I am a big fan of Duck Horn.
At $25+ its a rare occasion as I drink my wine like I do JD, by the water glass.
However Duck Horn has a blend that rocks for under $20.
Hess is another, love their cab but I've discovered their Treo Blend and its very affordable as well as drinkable.
IMO, we have a bottle for tonight.

Trying a new to me Port tonight, I usually grab one from a semi local winery but changed it up and grabbed this

Warre's Warrior

Not bad but for $3 less I like my Jersey Devil better.

I like Ports, never know what to buy though. Tawny, LBV, $$$ or $$?

Charles & Charles 2014 Rose tonight. Columbia Valley, very dry and crisp.

Went well with shrimp & linguine with a slightly spicy red sauce once it warmed up a little.
Should have taken the bottle out of the fridge 20 minutes before pouring.

about $13.

I kind of lean towards the Ruby over Tawny, but I will grab a tawny when the mood strikes. I don't spend a ton on a bottle as I am not sure my palette is refined enough to notice much difference yet. I stay around $15 to $20 a bottle for the most part, the semi local Jersey Devil is $15 so that is perfect for me lol.

I usually will drink ports only during cold weather. Of course for Scottsdale that is anything under 60F.

Fladgate 12 year Tawny last night.

I have heard that Ports are cold weather wines. Goes kind of hand in hand with bourbon being more of a winter drink I guess because of the ABV. I had a couple bottles of ruby this summer that was nice after a BBQ to wind down.

Dow fine white port

giving it a taste and not sure how I feel about it. Kind of a mix of a ruby and tawny it feels to me. Drinking it at room temp which is about 68, might try another glass tomorrow night at a colder temp.

Brown County Winery Old Barrel Port - (20% alcohol) Bourbon barrel aged and smooth. Super good desert wine. I don't drink much wine. Will have to try pairing it with a cigar.

Ports pair great with a cigar imo. I actually like just about any red wine with a cigar not so much the whites but then again they are not my favorite to begin with.

Gnarly Head 1924 Limited Edition Double Black 2013

it's a red blend and I really like this one

Chaucer's Mead honey wine, gifted to me by one of my drivers.

I'm gonna refrigerate the rest and see what happens. Came with mulling spices, but I think I'll pass.

I helped a friend make a 15 gallon batch of Syrah in his LA garage a few years ago. Not bad stuff but we over did it with new oak that was not toasted enough. Ice wine/ late harvest sounds fun.

Icewine is a real treat! There are a couple made in MA, but the only type I've had has been gifted by a coworker who picks it up when he visits family in Canada at Christmas time. Something about harvesting the grapes in frozen December/January that makes the juice limited and concentrated, and the wine super sweet

Last year he gave me a 200ML bottle of Cabernet Franc from Henry of Pelham Family Estates (I suspect it may have cost $40!!). The other day he handed me another Cabernet Franc from Pillitteri Estates. Both wineries are in Ontario.

This will be slowly quaffed around a fire pit one cold evening very soon.

Nice, yes I enjoy Ice Wine and hoping this one turns out good, so far it is fermenting really well.

Next I'm gonna find something my wife will enjoy and ferment one of the kit wines for 5 gal batches. I have a 6 gal big mouth bubbler, a handful of 5 gal and 2-3gal carboys, now I just need the room to operate. Back problems don't go well with glass carboys, either!

so, can it be made with any grapes from anywhere, is it about the process, or do they have to freeze on the vine before harvesting?

Ice wine is made from grapes that have naturally frozen on the vine, then picked. I started mine from a vidal type from a kit/prepackaged wine grape juice (seasonal), otherwise, yes any grape or Muscadine will make wine, so will anything that will ferment

Cold out on the patio today (about 53) so I'm going with a Taylor Fladgate 12 year tawny with my PSD#4.

I think a late harvest Zin would work well about now also.
