My Paw Paw passed when I was about 16. He smoked Keep Moving Goodies. Back in the early '70's I'd spend the weekends with him and my Maw Maw.

Coyell Bay ran a couple hundred yards away on the left and behind the house. Between the bayou and the house was a swamp. I used to swipe cigar butts from the ashtray of his 1950ish white step side FORD truck, put on a pair of hip waders and then head into the swamp with my .410 or .22. I'd smoke 'em while I shot anything that moved. Once done hunting, I'd go to this little mound of high ground, build a small fire and roast what ever I shot, squirrels, birds, etc...

Used to run crawfish traps in the swamp as well.

Life was simple back then.

A Pollock (sp?) in the woods behind my friends house in 1967. I was 12. My friend lifted a couple from his dad. I'll never forget the box. It was firm white cardboard with a cool black design and a top to match. Between the nervousness of the moment, no idea how to smoke a cigar and zero tolerance of tobacco, I got sick as hell! While I might be a bit jaded at my ripe old age, it's my guess they would qualify as dog rockets....

Suffice it to say, I recovered from that first experience tho I didn't try another cigar again until I was in my late 20's...........

^ very "pinky raised" classy for a first smoke.

Damn, there are some very good, colorful stories here. Gotta check in more often.
Makes me think that I may have tried crappier stuff earlier than the King Edwards but either forgot or blocked it out.

I believe it was a Tiparillo I bought from A&P when I was 9 or 10. Me & my buddy Shane would tell the cashier that the smokes were for our pops. It worked a couple of times. I remember smoking them under the train trestel & then before going home we would roll around in the dirt & leaves to try & get the smell out off of us.

Thanks for making me remember that!

Good Times!Herfing

believe the first was a padron x000 robusto, based on a recommendation from a friend. Group of us would meet up at murphy's for a burger, then go and smoke a cigar in the quad before class.

of course, being young and dumb in those days, there were plenty of back woods smoked on Friday nights while emptying bottles of Absolute Beer

I was funning with ya...the 5V Gold Maduro has been widely bashed here as one of the worst cigars ever, and I was thinking that if you survived that as your first smoke and have continued smoking...you're quite a tuffie....

I mean, I'd have to say a Garcia y Vega candela or Phillies maduro in high school, but we were just filling the wrappers with good Detroit boo at the time.

An aged Gurkha G3 in Spring 2005 at a Huichol Community Fire is what got me smoking good cigars regularly.

That's funny.
Candelas are a little too greenish for me... I know it's psychological. lol

Btw, not all drug stor/gas station cigars are bad either IMO. About a year ago I was in a pinch and bought a glass tubo Garcia y Vega. I was expecting the worse but was pleasantly surprised by the flavorful, mild smoke.

Smoked a Bances from my Dad back as a teen in 1972. Was about as green as the cigar when I finished.

After graduating college, I went to work for the family business. You could tell when we had "made payroll" each week when Dad lit up a cigar in his office. The aroma wafted throughout the office, usually on Thursdays and sometimes on Fridays. That year for Christmas, I bought Dad a box of nice cigars for Christmas (Arturo Fuente's) and included a note about how I knew it was a good week when I could smell his cigar on Thursday. The following week he called me into his office to share one of the cigars on Thursday to celebrate making payroll.

24 years later, we were clearing out his home office desk after he had retired and passed away from cancer, and there was the box with two bands and the note inside. Mom just handed it to me. No words were necessary. I fired up a special cigar to him that night.

My first cigar was a Don Rafael Connecticut on my 18th birthday. My dad gave me the smoke when we were hanging out around the fire pit. Now, when I'm in town (and weather permitting) we still share a stogie around the fire pit.

swishers or chocolate phillies in high school. One day a few years ago (im 27 now) I walked into a cigar shop just to look around, wasn't even why I was in that shopping center and didnt plan on buying anything. Walked out with the AF holiday box, a xikar humidor and a cutter. Just like beer I wish i would have never tried the good stuff because Phillies and bud light is a lot cheaper than opus X and double **** ale!

Cool to read everyones stories about how they started this expensive ridiculous hobby!

Fun thread... brings back a lot of great memories. My first stogie was a Hav-A-Tampa Jewel w a wooden tip in the summer of 1976 accompanied by a 6'er of Genesee beer. My first premium handmade was a Macanudo in the summer of 1989 by a campfire in the hills of Tennessee.

Sad story about the upcoming closing of the Hav-A-Tampa factory later this year. They started in 1902:

Wow, third one. Since you made it, I hope it's your last and glad it wasn't the last, if that makes any sense. Good to "see" you, Bro.

IDK.

Mebbe you shoulda turned left instead of right?

Mebbe you shoulda bet on red, not black?

Mebbe you shoulda gone dumpster diving for lottery tickets instead of ordering waffles?

Mebbe you shoulda invested $500 with that guy named Bill when he said he and his friend Paul were gonna get into this thing called “computers”?

Mebbe you shouldn’t have used $100 bills to light your cigars?

So many variables but you had your chances! ram27bat

Investment decisions would be easier if that dam crystal ball would work better.

1st premium hand rolled was the Ashton one of my groomsmen gVe me prior to my wedding. 1st I actively chose was an alleged cc Monte in a jewelry store in Jamaica. 1st rerolled was a Philly blunt back in the college daze

I smoked back in 04 or so then a cigar or 10 a year. Mostly just crap
Still had cigars from when I started for all those years. They were still in pretty good shape Smoked all of them back in 17-18 bought a brick of perdomo frescos or frescoes. Liked them. (Still do) tried an Oliva melanio and that’s what kinda got me more into cigars.

I remember smoking cigars when I was a teenager in the 80s. Swisher Sweets, sometimes a Dutch Master. I did the thing someone earlier mentioned about biting the end off it like Clint Eastwood (cause that's what you're supposed to do). I didn't realize that it had a hole in the end so that you didn't have to do that. Frying pan

My first premium was in the early 2000s. A client gave me (sorry, "gifted" me) a sampler from Holt's. I appreciated the thought but left them sitting in a ziploc bag for a couple of months because I wasn't a cigar smoker. I eventually tried one, and it was SO MUCH BETTER than the crap I smoked as a teenager. Holy Cow! I also remember my mouth watering like I had rabies or something.

I don't remember what was in the sampler except for a Connie named Ramundo. They were a house blend at Holt's that were pretty good. It was a bundle cigar, but not inexpensive. Alas, they don't sell them anymore.

My first cigar was a mild perdomo 6 years ago. No idea which one. We were celebrating a friend dropping out of college to join the Navy. It was a very sudden thing and he wanted to have one last get-together before he left to his hometown (and then basic training). The dude said he wanted in-n-out and cigars at 11pm. So in the dead of night, we decided to get cigars and drive to the closest In-n-Out (which was 1.5 hours away). None of us but one had ever smokes a cigar before, so he cut all of our cigars and lit them for us. Like a bunch of hoodlums, we walked around a town we had never been to at 1am, laughing, and talking about our big dreams for the future.

Makes me miss undergrad, when I could just spontaneously go on a trip at 11pm.

White owls I swiped from my Dad's stash in the garage in the early 80s. Tasted about as good as my first beer... not at all. Spit them both out. I ended up trying cigars people gave me along the way and didn't pay attention to what they were but they must not have been great because when I finally got interested and bought some descent smokes I really enjoyed it and have ever since.
