I little while back, I purchased a CI smiley face humification disk for an old humidor that I had, it was my first one and I've had it since I was 18 (11 years) and needed to replace the old disk. I set it up, put some sticks in it and gave the box to my mom, (yes she loves cigars). A while later, she comes up to me and says that the box smelled funny and the cigars tasted weird, so I lit one up and noticed the same thing. I lit another after just in case it was me and I got the same thing. It ruined the box as well as the cigars, plus I annoyed and angry my mother had to experience this.... Check your disks ppl

See the metal mesh keeping the beads in? It rusted and that rust smell and taste spread throughout the box.

Don't even mess with these things.

Air out your Humi.
Throw that crap away.
Clean it with distilled water.
Add BEADS to it.
Snap it back together.
Wet it and forget it.

Reaper0582 - Trish is working on this now. I have to ask, have you been using tap water? It's very important to use only distilled water. This is the first time I've seen this happen. Scary.

When I opened it, it scared the crap out of me, I even double and triple checked the bottle just to make sure that it was distilled, then I had to check the other humi I have just in case, and nope this was the only one... I got an answer from customer service to a technique on how to possibly fix the issue at least with the box, which at this point I'm will to try anything... However I gave the box to my mom and fully stocked her, and I'm down an entire box of sticks... Thats my issue..

I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

Thank you for still loving us Reaper! I'm so sorry this happened to you and really dumbfounded, I showed the picture to our Merchandising Team to get their ideas and opinions. Most of us have been using these things since we first started selling them and this is truly a first for us.

We need to get it back so we can send it off to the manufacturer. You've been working with Christy so she'll provide more details. We'll work with you on some of the other issues as well.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

Yes the mesh is stainless.

It can not be rust.

IMO.By looking at the crystals it seems to be that they were cross contaminated with something.

It looks as though one or some of them my have ruptured and spilled out onto the screen.

Thus discoloring it.

That REALLY sucks. The humidor I am sure will make it. Sadly the cigars probably won't.

It just so happens that I have a freebie box looking for a good home. PM me your addie and we'll get your mother taken care of........

Oh, I always put my beads in plastic - I never have a rust issue. And, I've never seen anything rust like that....weird........distilled water is critical in a clean process.

Whether the water was distilled or not. If it is not galvanized or stainless steel it will rust, distilled or not.

Trust me ppls, I know about distilled water, but as said above, if its not galvanized, it'll still rust. And I've never seen this either that's why I'm so weirded out!

I agree, I deal with this alot where I work, the product/cleaning acids/glycol/ will turn 316 stainless a rust color, which is actually called rouge. The stainless then needs to be derouged using other chemicals.
There's no doubt that a bead or 2 broke and caused the bad smell and taste, and the rust/rouge of the stainless screen.

Umm i dont know what kind of stainless steel your used to working with but it takes quite a lot to make it rust. Tap water wouldnt do that. We run acid, caustic and other chems through stainless pipe all the time. No rust.

How do we know it is 316. There are so many grades of stainless.

When I was new at cigars and was given a humi for xmas by my wife I put tap water in it. It rusted and ever since I have used distilled and also I stay away from metal. I only use the block humidifiers that are all plastic.

Mostly now I just use beads. Even in my big humi with 4 humidifiers I have several pounds of beads in there just to keep things stable.

Well, if you've seen that disk, its the beads inside the plastic covered by the mesh... And I think I'm gonna have to just find the plain beads from now on.
