From our local paper, The Augusta Chronicle, Letters to the Editor:
Life would be so much easier. Promise the moon without any concern as to how to pay for it. And if you're a liberal politician, say whatever you want to say and your accomplices in the media will provide as much cover as necessary.
And break campaign promises? Don't worry -- it won't be reported, except maybe a slight mention from time to time on that far-right extremist news outlet called Fox News.
Best of all: If I were a liberal, I would be very, very smart. I would have all the answers to all of our problems. Because as a liberal, I would be smarter than those common folks in "fly-over country." At last check, most liberals are on the extreme Left -- I mean West Coast, and the upper Northeast.
On the downside, I would be condescending from time to time. It is just part of the personality of your average liberal. Life's not perfect or fair, sometimes even for liberals.
It gets even better being a liberal: Use everyone else's money but your own, by taxing all those evil rich people so they will quit investing and creating jobs. And spread that money around to the current 35 percent who depend on others' hard work.
You also get the opportunity to provide many wonderful organizations with someone else's money, such as ACORN -- an organization that must be OK, because it has been very supportive of our president.
To wrap up why life is so good as a liberal: no accountability! You can get away with murder (almost literally), especially if you're a liberal politician. And don't worry about facts -- mere conjecture works if you're a liberal.
On the other hand, if you're a conservative, life can be tough. You worry about the present state and future of this great and possibly declining country. You have this thing called "responsibility" that keeps weighing on you when you see so much irresponsibility going on in places such as our White House. You know this country yearns for leadership that has been nonexistent for a while.
However, somehow, someway, optimism and hope keep occupying the gray matter of a conservative. Most conservatives believe that good, old-fashioned hard work and self-reliance -- and, for many, reliance on a higher power -- are the key ingredients to success and freedom.
Most conservatives do not believe our problems are solved by Washington, D.C. They believe that Washington creates the problems and resolves very few.
Stay awake and stay informed. As the saying goes: The cost of freedom is eternal vigilance.
