Welcome Jim,been playing any tennis lately? Are you talking about the DR Monte #2 or the Cuban version? X

Huge difference between the two. One is a Cuban benchmark of fine cigar making...the other an over-priced, over-rated wannebe. This is of course only my humble opinion.

You are correct sir. Although, the Dominican Monte is a well made and tasty smoke, I have trouble rationalizing it's price tag of almost $180 a box. Likewise with the Cohiba Dominicans. I'd rather plunk down close to a hundred for some AVOs or CAOs.

Hey Jim, I would recommend to you to try the regular Padron line. Excellent construction, great taste (with a particular "nuttiness" that a lot of the Nicaraguan cigars have...) and very consistent at a very reasonable price. It's a good proxy for Nicaraguan cigars. As you progress in your new odyssey of the world of cigars, you will begin to notice peculiarities of taste of cigars from different regions. Pay attention to where your cigar is from, the principle regions being DR (dominican republic), Honduras, and Nicaragua. There are many other cigar producing regions in the world, but those are the principle (besides of course, that small island country off the coast of Florida that you will see mysteriously referred to here as ISOM... i'll save you having to ask in a later thread... island south of miami) In addition, many of the cigars are rolled with tobacco from several different regions, so, for instance, a DR cigar may have some honduran or nic in the blend. Ah geez, i was gonna keep this simple and short. Forget about the blends for now, just enjoy, explore and ask where the particualr cigar is from. You'll start to notice similarities of flavor based upon where the cigar is from. One last word: when you ask what's "good" you'll get a myriad of responses. It all boils down to personal preference.. what YOU like is good. Don't get caught up in any BS or snobbery crap. Just enjoy. Welcome to a world of comraderie and good times, my friend. NOW GO LIGHT ONE UP!

When you're done with the Padron's try Bucanero. Especially the Full Sail line. Your pocketbook and tastebuds will thank me!

Although many cubans sold are counterfeit, I've purchased them through legitimate Habanos retailers in many other countries other than Canada. I'd check your cigar guy's medicine cabinet for cat tranquilizers.

Madd, I'm afraid that Full Sail will knock him right between the eyes. But agreed, Bucanero's are great! Aren't the Peg Legs a little milder? Or the El Capitans?
I think the suggestion to start off with Padrons is a good idea. And maybe Mayorgas.

A Bucanero Full Sail is not a good place to start ... not, IMHO, because it's too strong, but because it's too good ...

Hey JC,

As long as folks are handing out suggestions, let me throw in my two cents worth and recommend the Avo Domain. Of course, the ISOM Partagas and Cohiba Special Reserves sitting in my humidor are nice, too :) And speaking as one who has enjoyed cigars for over 20 years now, allow me to humbly suggest that you try lots of different brands and sizes. I've found that variety is indeed the spice of life, and thankfully this is one pasttime that offers enough variety and nuance to suit any mood or occasion. And just when you think you've found the best ever, another great experience is always lingering around the next corner. That's what makes it so fun...and addicting.

A must try would be CAO cameroon. Considered pricey to some, considered not so pricey to others.(It's all relative I guess.) But it's defiitely one of mine, and many of the guy's here's favorites. Any naysayers?

I agree with many of the suggestions, however, I think he's looking for a milder smoke. In that case I recommend an Ashton Double Magnum (same price as a Dunhill, but 100X better) or an Avo XO Maestoso or Intermezzo.

Charlie ... The entire Bucanero line is good ... the cream of their crop IMNSHO, is the Full Sail ... I also like their El Capitan maddies and Windjammer Belicoso maddies ... I've had the natural Windjammer too, but as in the Ivory Soap percentage of all other cigars, I prefer the maddie ...
