Some great ones already listed, including Johnny Cash, Live at Folsom Prison, and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Will the Circle Be Unbroken (can't hardly believe it got a mention on this board though).

Metallica, Black Album is great, Pearl Jam 10 is great, ect. etc.

One that is not listed yet is Live, Throwing Copper. Great album.

I somehow forgot about Operation Mindcrime- would definitely include that one.

I just got a copy of Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 yesterday. I have only listened to it twice, but I would have to put it on the list also. Every song is pretty good.

Abso-friggin-lutely!! That album is a blast to listen too. You can tell how much fun those guys were having. Another in that vein is Little Village. John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner. It's AWESOME!!

Out Of The Blue...ELO

Anything...anything at all...from The Moody Blues circa 1969-1970: Days of Future Past, In Search of the Lost Chord, To Our Children's Children's Children, A Question Of Balance, etc.

Thoughtful lyrics, lovely melodies.
Would be considered laughable and pretentious if played today to kids under 18yo.

"Musically better than anything listed so far....."

Sorry I didn't mean to sound arrogant. I love many of the albums listed but for my money the above jazz albumns and others in the field are so incredible, there is not much to compare at least within the broader context of "modern music"(that is unless you are talking about classical forms from someone like George Gershwin, Dmitri Shostakovich etc. ).
Best
Q

PS Now if we are talking fussion:
Al Dimeola, Dixie Dregs, Mah. Orch.,Return to Forever etc... there are some real interesting bands.
Or the blues, now do not get me started lol.

You'll laugh, but I used to love Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground.
This is prolly considered "pop" jazz, something for the masses.
I are a "mass," I guess. LOL.

"Uncle Tupelo's sound was unlike popular country music of the time, drawing inspiration from styles as diverse as the hardcore punk of The Minutemen and the country instrumentation and harmony of the Carter Family and Hank Williams. Farrar and Tweedy lyrics frequently referenced Middle America and the working class of Belleville."
