i have an assortment of drill bill sets from home depot and a few other placed like that. mostly the small ones are broken, the rest i use for wood, and they make nice round holes.

i tried to drill through conduit and saw lots of smoke so i guess these bits are not very good.

i do have a set of bits i bought at a tool show. no name, but on the bits it is stamped HSS. they cut right through the conduit.

what does HSS mean and what does case hardened mean if anything.

HSS High Speed Steel...

Temperd better then cheap bits...

Rick add the non HSS to a garage sale cheap so they'll be gone and always use the better bits to get the job done...

are the HSS the strongest and most likely to cut and hold their tip or what should i look for in a good set of bits.

what does case hardened mean if anything.

there are many types of drill bit to do the different types of drilling.. above is just a couple links to places I have ordered from...

I have also been buying from Amazon check in their tools/hardware area...

HHS drill bit are a good bit for drilling steel as are other better tempered steel bits.. for woodworking bits the temper does not have to be as high on the bit, but also the speed at which making the cut could dull a bit on wood if the blade gets to hot...

Masonary bits are just that for cutting into concrete/mortor etc... a HHS bit wouldn't last 3 twists in concrete and vise versa masonary bits wont scratch
