Al - I still think addiction is not a 'disease', but a series of bad decisions that lead to mental instability. Most (not all) people who are drug or alcohol addicts have an underlying MH issue that they are self medicating with drugs/alcohol.

though it does happen the way you describe, I think it is very well documented that some people are just wired for, or have a genetic predisposition toward addiction...addictive personalities if you will. I think that can qualify as a disease or a syndrome...

I'd just quibble with your time line (which came first?), I think many addicts started with "mental instability" leading to the bad decision to self-medicate. Bipolar people, particularly when in the depressed state, are off the charts as personalities that self medicate, but the drug use decision doesn't cause that psychological condition/MH issue. It can cause job loss, alienation from family/support systems, divorce,homelessness...and those can certainly make a predisposition to depression worse.

^ #50 ...So, MACS,you'd like to lock them up, including Limbaugh? Although I think that is a good idea, as far as he goes, I don't think criminalizing possession and personal use of small amounts of some narcotics is the best and most cost effective practice for our country. Long-term jail sentences for people in those cases are what has led to the very costly and overcrowded state prisons...and local law enforcement costs for the war on drugs include distrustful relations between local police departments and the communities they serve.

Nope. He's not more powerful. HE'S FIRED!!

Meh. I watched his show a few times back when Bush and Gore were battling for the presidency. He was almost tolerable back then. He's so damn smarmy he's hard to watch.

A little surprising, considering his viewers ramped up his ratings immediately after the sex allegations were publicized. He was the highest rated and considered the most trusted conservative on the opinion shows on cable TV. I guess the advertising boycott was the decisive blow...

Recap:

The same people who supported Bill Clinton through his sexual harassment allegations wanted to fire Bill O'Reilly for the same.
Seems they want the talk show hosts on stations they don't watch to be held to higher standards than their president.

^ this

And Al, Clinton was accused of harassment, assault and rape. The charges were long standing and from before he was president. You know, before he lied under oath about another marital indiscretion....or we'll call it purgry.

O'Reilly apparently got his just desserts, and it was Rupert's sons who led the charge (both lefties btw).

For someone who scolded earlier posts for not taking O'Reilly's accusations seriously what would you say to Clinton's accusers (including the one that was rape)?

We see what we want blah blah blah......

And who do you think was pressuring the advertisers? There's no big group going after MSLSD's advertisers or Cresent News Networks that I've ever heard of....the far left is a real POS lot. And I'm no big Republican fan either.

Not denying Clinton had his issues, and American history will always say that his Presidency has a permanent stain...one of only three ever impeached...

...so now, when the right says "Clinton" when questioning the values of the left, the response will be "O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Nixon"

Neither side has a claim to moral high ground, but the right seems to act as if it is their home turf...

So you lump a television host and a radio DJ in with a President when comparing partisan wrongdoing?

Because the TV host and the radio DJ had more influence in shaping the opinions and beliefs of, and are more trusted by, a large segment of the American people...they do have a big impact, like a President, in shaping America's values.

Meh.....whatever. I wish I could grab a broads tit or whatever he did and be "fired" with a multimillion dollar golden parachute. He'll be fine. My only issue with O'Reilly is the fact that he's a damn smart guy that went down the populist road to appeal to the average dumbass. Yeah his ratings would have been less but at least he would have had some dignity. It's a shame that intellectualism is no longer "in vogue"

Impact aside, they should not be held to the same standards.
The fact that many on the left blur the distinction is more a testament to their own values, or lack thereof.
