They later tried too blame, 'fluxuations' in bookings for the problem.

That $800+ they didn't want to pay is going to cost them million$. After the civil trial, a hate crime trial?

I hate airline with a passion, United sucks even more now.

I heard what actually caused this was that United had four employees they needed to get to Louisville....so after realizing they over-booked they simply decided their employees getting to their destination was MORE important than getting their PAYED PASSENGERS there ans so ripped this man from his seat.

well, it's a damn good thing it wasn't me they decided to force off the plane ... good because at my age, I'd have no doubt sustained injuries that I just can't be sustaining all willy-nilly, but also because there'd have been a much more X-rated quality to the now widely seen video ... and, I'd be suing United and the police agency that abetted them for enough money that not only would I never have to consider whether my cigar purchases were within my budget, my children and grandchildren would be in tall cotton for life ...

Easily one of the more outrageous things I've ever seen or heard about in the way of corporate abuse (and I'm generally on the corporate side of "issues")

That depends. Lots of "what if's." Does the plane fall under federal or state jurisdiction?

In at least one scenerio the police were right (I haven't seen the video). Suppose the incident took place in state jurisdiction. If there is a law where the owner, or agents for the owner can ask someone to leave and they refuse, then I can see probable cause to arrest and charge a person with trespassing or something similar. If that's the case and he was given a summons or booked absent any other obfuscating detail then I'd say the police did their job properly.

Clearly not handled well by anyone involved.

But, when did it become ok to disobey flight attendants giving lawful instructions (orders?)

I thought that they have been anointed with a certain level of authority on airplanes that (probably?) includes asking passengers to disembark. Not saying that United and probably the LEO's weren't wrong. But I think the passenger bears some responsibility, as well.

Why didn't they just reaccomadate the 4 employees with a flight landing at the same time, or pay them the 800? They whole, by purchasing this ticket you agree to anything we say stuff either.

I don't think they had another option on the flight crew. If they didn't catch that plane it caused a cancelled flight the following day, but seems that the option for a stand by crew in Louisville wasn't a better option or even available. What I didn't realize was that they can randomly pull people off. If I booked a flight 6 months in advance I have the same chance of being bumped as one who booked last minute. I guess I assumed once the flight was near full the tickets sold near the end had a note saying that there is potential that you will be bumped. So how random was it? Did they just pick passengers that booked a single ticket? What if I was flying with my spouse and one of us got the random draw? We wouldn't go without the other. Would one of us then be voluntarily giving up a seat without compensation?

To be able to pull random paying passengers off and wrecking their plans seems like poor business practice to me.

We once got bumped because we paid the least for our ticket............ We booked 6-7 months in advance. We were the first people to check our bags at the counter. The first through security... ( it was a real small airport). Just about to board, and they called us out of line. The bitch of it, was that a family of 4 with all kinds of luggage showed up late to the gate... They held takeoff... And then said we got bumped cuz the plane was over weight. I couldn't believe they said we were picked cuz we paid the least for our seats. Brick wall

I think this needs to be a thing.
Airlines have been doing this too long. Apparently this happens about 40k times a year.... where no one volunteers to give up their seat so someone is... "selected". It's bs.

Doesn't matter who it is or what they're travelling to do. That's their business. They arranged with an airline to be transported at a specific day and time. The airline put that arrangement at risk by intentionally selling more seats than they had, for no reason other than to maximise profits. It's the airlines responsibility to find people willing to renegotiate their contract... I don't care if they have to offer $5000 and a BJ to get people to voluntarily renegotiate, in this case it is in no way the passengers problem.

it absolutely needs to be adressed, but won't be... the airline will quietly settle the matter and ensure the affected party signs something promising to keep his mouth shut and we won't think anything about it until something exactly like this happens again in a few years...

I'd be more sympathetic if airlines were accommodating to people when they need to change their plans. But they're pretty draconian on ticket changes unless you pay a premium. So they should pay a premium to be able to change a person's travel.

The airlines will fix this in the usual way. They'll call up the members of the parliament of whores they own and have them pass a bill requiring the following admonishment:

"Your place on the plane is crapshoot, even of you pay cash in advance the airline can refuse to carry you to your destination for any reason."

This statement will be conveniently located 88 screens deep in the online terms acknowledgment you have to click to buy your ticket.

Nope, not at all. Two different issues. One civil and one criminal. Regardless, it's still a BS way to handle a customer.

Thankfully I've never been assault but I've been f#$%ed by airlines a gazillion times as a last minute traveler for work. The two times I've been "denied boarding" they didn't allow me to board the plane and compensated me 4x my ticket price for the delay in excess of 4 hours. There is some law about that when you are denied board which is different than a safety, weather, or volunteer your seat for a **** voucher situation.

Also airlines have special rules and when they say GTFO a plane, you're supposed to GTFO. My fiance was on a flight back from London when a group of dudes got way drunk before the plane even took off. One of them urinated in his seat prior to take off and they removed him from the plan (less violent cause he was piss [get it? I'm punny.] drunk and didn't resist). Then his buddies all got beligerant and were removed from the flight as well.

Unfortunately the pee chair was not cleaned, just covered up so nothing like 8+ hours sniffing piss.

That being said... seriously F$%# united. THis was super ****, their PR response was even worse. Also chicago PD or whichever law enforcement agency released a statement is retarded as well. THeir statement makes no **** sense and directly contradicts all the cell phone videos.

CELL PHONE CAMERAS ARE UBIQUITOUS NOW. EVERYTHING IS BEING FILMED. THAT GOES FOR EVERYONES!
