It's is ridiculous how they are processing claims.
On 9/2/2016 I handed my flood policy dec page to a FEMA counselor at North Park. That dec page clearly stated that I did not have contents coverage.
As of 9/9/2016 I was still being denied assistance because my flood insurance covered contents.
I'm being told that apparently my dec page still hasn't been scanned into the system.
For the life of me I can't understand why no infrastructure exists so counselors can import that data while they are talking to you. Instead, she told me she would fax it to the data center so they could scan it in.
Giving the councilors the ability to do so would eliminate the possibility that paperwork could be lost and not imported.
In addition, there is a real threat that FEMA is going to require tens of thousands of homes to be raised at a cost of $50-$65 or more per square foot for houses on concrete slabs which account for more than 75% of the homes in our community. Though it sounds good on paper, in reality it will turn this area into a ghost town.
Most homes in this area average about 1800 sq ft. To raise that home it would cost the homeowner between $90,000 and $117,000. My mother's house is 1790 sq ft. She's in her 70's and lives on a fixed income. She doesn't have that kind of money. As it stands right now, she has to submit a written estimate from a licensed contractor as well as an appraisal in order to get a permit to start remodeling her home. If the estimate is above 50% of that value, she will be required to raise her slab before she can get a work permit. If required to do so,
She will have to walk away because she can't afford to do so. I'm not an attorney, but it seems like they S would be considered some sort of seizure. If I'm not mistaken she would have to be compensated by the government at fair market value if the seize her property.
