Why is he "self absorbed"? He is doing nothing that most of us would do if we had his resources. He wants the very best for himself and those he wishes to gift, and he is willing to pay for it. Tuck

#48 "Tuck, when did you become a cigar slave? I'm sort of picturing Chicken George of "Roots" fame, with you rolling around trying to curry favor with the high dollar tastes... "

He's a friend, he thinks I know more about cigars than himself, and he asked graciously for my help. I said I'd see what I could do. I'm doing it. Same as I'd do for you if you needed help. It was actually a pretty casual thing. And it's for a friend who has been very generous to me in former years . . . offering his planes to get me somewhere, asking me to join him on his boat (big boat!), etc. Just doing a friend a favor. #6 ". . . Besides, I share my favorite top shelf cigar with the guy and he goes out, buys every one in sight, drives up the price, and I'm left to smoke the every day stuff...every day? Sorry, I don't have much time for people who take themselves too seriously, and I'm not about to help some wanker empty the market of my favorite once in a while cigar."

Pretty much of an overreaction. I really doubt it would make much difference in the universe if my friend should buy several hundred boxes of a cigar most of us rarely smoke (or see). Even limited releases are produced in pretty huge quantities for one guy to monopolize. And I doubt he would buy that many at one time, even if they were available. Don't panic, I'm pretty sure you're safe. But maybe not . . . he does have three main homes, several offices, and three boats. Tuck

"He has enjoyed fine cigars for years, and is fairly knowledgable."

Which is why he asked you to find him a rare cigar?

Um... yeah... okay.

Here. On CBid. Instead of the 2 boards you usually post on.

Check.

I'd ask him for airfare and accomadations to Miami to research cigars and explore the possibility of having his own line rolled.......I would need an expense account as well to sample many possiblities and I would also see if there was a mirobrew to brew a compliment to the cigar.............

Tell him to pass out the boxes of 5 (they only sell them as singles or in 5's) ... of the La Flour Dominicana 'Mysterio'.

At arond $20 a cigar ... they should impress anyone enough ... without makingthenselves look like a real 'poser'.

Being medium to full-bodied with a nice complexity ... and not 'so many' that to overwhelm the recipient (in case they don't like his 'signature' cigar) ...

... and besides being a damn good perfecto, the two wrappers (Sun-Grown and dark Connecticut) set it off nicely.

#53 Well, I have this funny notion that we are all entitled to our opinions. For instance, I think someone who would send a plane to another country to buy pickles is an ****. Really, think of the good things he could have done with the money that cost. He could have probably helped a single parent with a downpayment for a house.

Plus, the guy wants to hand out his "signature" cigar to impress people. If he actually knew something about cigars, that'd still be a dubious move, at least a tad egotistical. However, he wants to rely on the knowledge of others to impress people, as if he actually had the brains and taste to seek out a singular specimen of a cigar. That's posing, my friend.

And you claim he couldn't skew the market because there would still probably be a large quantity of cigars left out there, yet your original post indicates that he clearly wants a cigar that is rare. Can't have it both ways.

Lastly, I'm not even close to panic stage. You may notice the only cigar I named was White Owl Pineapple tubos. He can have every last one on the planet for all I care. I'm not about to share any "secret stash" type of cigars with this d-bag. He may be generous to a fault with you, but what he's done is say "go ask some of your cigar friends to find me a really rare cigar that I can use to impress people far and wide".

Like I said, he's an ****.

How about the Gurkha his majesty's reserve? If he likes that idea and offers me a box or two for a finder's fee. I promise I'll share with everyone on the board!

Actually I find him a very interesting man, loyal to his friends (even as far back as high school), tough in business, but very generous with his fortune where appropriate. He didn't inherit, made every penny of his sizable net worth.

What I do find terribly humorous here is . . . . he holds the same opinion of attorneys. And I've never heard him sound so bitter and unhappy.

Thanks for all the good suggestions, several very good ones.

Well Pacman, you and I don't agree a lot. But I am on the same page with you here.

Unless of course, "Pickles" is a high end (pardon the pun) stripper.

Hey Tuck...........

you ought to post this inquiry on the other cigar sites you frequent.........instead of the one you have disparaged.

Thanks for the suggestion Andy. I rarely post or sign on anywhere anymore due to personal problems. I stop by here on occasion to find a bargain, and while I was here . . . .

Does this man, by chance, have a dream to one day hold the Woody Woodpecker Balloon in the Thanksgiving Day Parade? Some people find his laugh intoxicating.

For what it's worth:

If you know someone like this, you will often find that they do one thing VERY well, generally their work. The rest, they get help, opinions, instruction. Be it golf, wine, art, cigars, etc. They are usually so entwined in thier occupation they would rather hire someone who knows something about their secondary interest(s). This person points them in the right direction and then they are able to fully enjoy that secondary interest without all the time spent researching and searching for.

I know a couple of people like this.

Don't know if it qualifies for "ultra premium", but I really liked the Jose Seijas Signature. You don't really see it much, but it's a well made, fairly expensive (though not on par w/ DC Max, Opus X, etc.), and comes in a 50 and 52 gauge. Just an idea.

La Aurora 100 Anos would do the trick.

Aged rare cigars is where I would go. Try these:

Casa Fuente
Anejo Shark 77
Opus X Rising
Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario cigars

We are just talking money here. He could probably fly around to all the B&Ms in the US and Europe and pick up the remaining stock of Cien Anos.

Couple of mentions of Partagas. I think the Decadas would be a little easy to keep stock and taste as good as the 160.

This is a weird situation, but I agree with Slimboli. The La Flour Dominicana 'Mysterio' would be a good choice or the LFD Small Batch.

Andy is just busy I believe and doesn't smoke cigars as often since he got into running.

Tom has health issues, and I think he's taken an Internet break.

For this guy, I would recommend the "Soy Mejor Que Todos" in the "Lleno de Inseguridad" vitola.

If he can't find that, I hear the "Narcisista Rico" in the "La Gran Fanfarrón" vitola is quite excellent and suitable for his needs.

They're so exclusive that you won't find any details about them on the internet, but Google Translate will tell you what the names mean. Herfing

Eleven years later . . . I'd like to know the final outcome of this story.

If a suitable cigar was not determined, maybe he should ask frankj1 for suggestions.
After-all . . . he's like a genius, ya know !

Ha! You expect him to consider these cigars of the COMMONERS? For SHAME, sir! This man is magnificent! He does not wish for cigars that ORDINARY peon men can obtain! Surely not!

He requires cigars that no other men can have, so his howling pit of insecurity in the very seat of his soul is continually reassured of how TOTALLY AWESOME and IMPORTANT he is!
