Do any of you guys have experience with fishing waders? I have the opportunity this year to do some river fishing that will require waders. I generally buy from Cabelas as I have their credit card and get money back. When I search Men's Waders I get 92 options and have no clue where to start. Generally I want to spend under $120. Thoughts on each of the below:

(noting that I need chest high)
-Thickness
-Insulated/Not-Insulated
-Material
-Types of soles/connected boots
-Cleated/not-cleated
-Anything else I need to consider

If you want to really help out, take a look at the Cabelas site and look at all of the ones under $120 and let me know what you think my best bet is.

Neoprene is my preference as you won't turn into an anchor if you get water in em.

Get some with shoulders that buckle not just adjust. A belt above the waist is nice too. Chest pockets are also nice. Insulation depends on water temp. The type of boot to get will depend on the river bottom. A rocky bottom with faster current will be slick and big cleats will suck. The cleats will help sinking so much in a real muddy bottom though.

Whatever you get make sure to poke holes in the bottom of the boots though, this will help drain them when moisture is trapped inside.

Unless you're an excellent swimmer, in real good shape, and you know you'll be able to shuck your outfit QUICK should you stumble and fall in the water.
Even experienced guys out here have died on the Chetco and the Rogue.

I suppose my water skills are still extraordinary.......I usually swim the length of our local lake,3 miles,at least 2-3 times a year.

I've seen dead bodies with the plain rubber waders rush past my fishing spot. Twice.

Breathables with a belt or two, and a PFD.............prolly fine.
Still, if there's current, cold water, dicey bottom?............neoprene for me.

Anyone wearing those old school rubber units is a fool.
In fact I believe the guy who drowned here recently was wearing just that sort of getup. And he was standing in 2 or 3 feet of water............initially.

My guess is bloated. And couldn't be too new if the bodies went past more than once.

But nice post

I've used neoprene stockingfoot waders and felt soled boots for cold western freestone rivers. Uninsulated, you can always ad some long underwear if need be. And with a stocking foot you can switch to fins if you use a belly boat sometimes.

Years ago I had some flyweights. They were nice for hot Summer fishing or warmer waters.

Went from rubber, to neoprene, to breathable stocking foot with felt soled boots.
Felt vs lug sole is sometimes dictated by state law, i remember in CO i was not able to pick up any felt soles.
Terrain also depends on what material youd want, but breathables are easier to patch. For bootfoot waders, once the seals around the boots crack, which is unavoidable over time, they are pretty much gonners. Hope thats somewhat helpful

I didn't want to swim out, he was obviously dead......but I did get a beer out of his cooler that also washed down. Heap beer but it was cold, just like the owner buying cheap waders.

My preference is non-insulated "breathable" waders. As far as wading boots are concerned it is better to get ones without felt soles because they are not allowed on some streams/rivers. I've got the hip waders (https://goo.gl/dBhcDo) and wading boots (https://goo.gl/wdTVMR) from Cabelas and both work fine. I also have non-insulated "breathable" chest waders that I've used for years from Orvis that I got on sale several years ago on sale. I had the Orvis waders flooded in Alaska while fly fishing a stream and I didn't have any problem getting out and to safety with them full of water. Best of luck and try to catch Cabelas when they are on sale and they are a bargain.

I've got a boot foot pair of breathable waders size large that are collecting dust if you are interested. Let me know if you have any interest in them and I'll dig them up and get you more detail.

There is no scientific consensus about felt soles and regulation about such things puts the felt industry into a death spiral. Save the felts.. clean felts matter

I heard him sing this to Frank the other day

Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful
Makin' love with you is all I wanna do
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true
And everything that I do is out of lovin' you
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
Do do do do do

No one else can make me feel
The colours that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime
'Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day of my life is filled with lovin' you

Lovin' you, I see your soul come shinin' through
And every time that we, ooh
I'm more in love with you
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
Do do do do do

No one else can make me feel
The colours that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime
'Cause lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful
And every day of my life is filled with lovin' you
Lovin' you, I see your soul come shinin' through
And every day that we, ooh
I'm more in love with you
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
Do do do do do
Na, ooh, la la la la la la la la la
Do do do do do

.........If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
Come on, sugar, let me know
If you really need me, just reach out and touch me
Come on, honey, tell me so, tell me so, baby
He's acting shy, looking for an answer
Come on honey, let's spend the night together
Now hold on a minute before we go much further
Give me a dime so I can phone my mother
They catch a cab to his high rise apartment
At last he can tell him exactly what his heart meant
If you want my body and you think I'm sexy
Come on honey, tell me so
If you really need me, just reach out and touch me
Come on sugar, let me know...........

C'mon Rick.
You're one of the locals and should know the reference.

If not, ask Frank.
He was there.
