Books suspended by Va. school for racial slurs

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. -- Two classic American novels have been temporarily banned from a Virginia school district after a parent raised concerns about the use of a racial slur.

The use of the book’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” were suspended from Accomack County Public Schools after a parent raised concerns about their use of the N-word, CBS affiliate WTVR reported.

“There’s so much racial slurs and defensive wording in there that you can’t get past that,” the mother said during last month’s school board meeting. “Right now, we are a nation divided as it is.”

She filed a complaint through a “Request for Reconsideration of Learning Resources” form.

WTVR reported that now a “review committee consisting of the principal, the library media specialist, the classroom teacher (if involved), a parent and/or student, and the complaint will convene.”

Combined, the two books use the N-word more than 250 times.

Some parents told WTVR that the use of the racial slur is unacceptable.

“It’s in a book and they’ll feel that they are able to say that to anybody, and so I don’t feel that that should be done,” Teresa Wilkins, whose children attend ACPS, said.

However, not all parents agreed.

“I think we’re sending a message to our children that if you don’t talk about something, it doesn’t exist,” Donna Natoli said.

The superintendent said there is no set date for when the recommendation will be made.

OUTRAGEOUS!
The parent(s) must be completely ignorant… and stupid. Pansy-ass liberals who obviously have never read the books, or have no reading comprehension at all!. These are classics of American literature, and where required reading when I was in school! Harper Lee was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for "To Kill A Mockingbird"!

Oh #@$% these people... To Kill A Mockingbird? Seriously? One of the single best novels ever written and not a tinge of racism in the book that isn't 100% condemned in the book...

"To Kill" is one of my favorite books (I even have a copy that Harper Lee signed). My son just finished reading Huckleberry for school last month.

People are just too sensitive about some things. And it's not just from the liberals. Conservative Christians threw a fit over "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and the Starbucks cups. fog

Some people are so narcissistic that they think their time (now) is the only one that matters. You can learn history without judging it through the lens of the "now".

Somehow everyone that isn't Christian is offended, or feels left out and discriminated against. But we all supposed to accept Kwanzaa, Rosh Hashanah. and the Ramadan! Hypocrisy at it's best. d'oh!

Wonder if the idiot parents find Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" offensive??

I'm gonna try to throw a bit of perspective here.

I don't advocate banning any books. I think literature is our most valuable asset.

But don't you think it's funny that a bunch of older white males (most of whom probably used some racial or sexual slur at some point in their lives to intentionally hurt someone) are now saying people should just "stop whining ". None of us know what it's like to be on the other side. It seems to me that some parents are trying to keep their kids from being exposed to something that they had to endure in their past.

Whether they are going about it the right way or not is debatable. But a bunch of white males saying "get over it" is probably not a productive way to resolve the issue.

Every time I hear you guys whine that "this minority is upset about something I don't think is anything important " I get images of a guy whining about his hang nail while his wife is in labor....

Pics would indicate that you are one of if not thee whitest guy here Victor... so your attempt to throw "a bit of perspective" is actually just adding more white opinion, regardless of whether you agree with the other white opinions presented... you're trying to diversify marshmallows by adding marshmallow fluff...

I did say "try". Not necessarily succeed. I don't claim to know what a minority perspective would be. The point of my post is that no one saying "quit whining " has any idea what it is like either. Seems like the sort of situation where we could be more productive by not telling other groups how they should or should not feel about things we would never experience.

Well that's a load of BS. My family has been discriminated against and bullied because we where white. Discrimination happens on both sides - black or white, or yellow, or purple, or even with polka-dots.

How can these parents expect their children to understand what it's like, or the history of their plight, if they can't read about it? Fuq'n idiots. If they actually read the books they would understand how far the Nation has come, instead of ignoring it.

when I renewed my license, the DMV darkened my pre-existing picture from 8 years ago by several shades... not sure if they thought I was black and the pic had just lightened over the years, but if you look at my drivers license, I look full on black... so stop whining...

Dammit...
.... normalization of discrimination. None of us would know what that is like. Day in day out on all the media in every interaction. I'm simply suggesting we not make assumptions about whether someone should get over something

Try 5,840+ days, and being one of very few white families it was a "complete societal normalization" in that neighborhood.

You really are a privileged, sheltered, white boy born with a silver spoon.

Cacman... "in that neighborhood ". You still had the entire nation showing your happy white face doing happy white things. Just like I did.

But to further make my point, see how angry you are that I'm not understanding your suffering and how marginalized you felt? You feel like there's no way I could understand it because you're sure I was born with a silver spoon... heck, my lack of understanding is certainly entrenching you further in your position.

The same thing is happening in your reaction to this person's opinion.

My outrage comes from the hypocrisy of banning classic literature because of how it makes a small number feel.

Wouldn't be surprised if the parents listened to Tupak and on the way home from the meeting.

Except I stated at the beginning that I don't believe in any literature being banned, and you still called me "privileged sheltered white boy born with a silver spoon in your mouth".
Clearly you have an issue with me and your issue with me must not be about books.

book banning is scary.

I'm not much of a reader of novels the last few years, but I get shivers now when thinking about a book I read a couple of years ago It Can't Happen Here, Sinclair Lewis circa 1934
Government crackdown on newspapers etc.

Oy.

Wrong.
Christians are indeed too sensitive at times (I remember when they condoned seeing monty pythons life of brian).
But the Happy Holidays fury wasn't against that phrase. It was the reasoning behind it.

And nobody was REALLY upset starbucks outside of the faux outrage vehicles such as a cigar forum.

Nobody is offended by Happy Holidays.
Nobody feels discriminated by it.

People used to say it frequently years ago. But it was meant to be all encompassing. To include Thanksgiving and Christmas. Or Christmas and New Years.

But one day, the nation was told that it is offensive to say Merry Christmas because many are not Christian.
The term Happy Holidays was a forced replacement.

Don't confuse the issue on this one.
Christians have many faults like anyone else. They needn't be saddled with this false impression.

I guess we can't make laws to punish a murderer unless we've killed someone.

I'm white.
I've used racial slurs in my lifetime. Mostly in jest, but I'm sure I've said some things that were hurtful on purpose. Just like I've said things to people who were fat, or ugly, or geeky, or too feminine/masculine, or based on ethnicity etc. to hurt them with words. A verbal punch, so to speak.
I don't remember specifics, but I'm sure I've done it.

So what?
Doesn't mean I don't have empathy.
Doesn't mean I feel those people are somehow inferior.
It would have been said in anger. Maybe in response to an action or word they said. Or maybe they were just Jets fans...
Point being, we have to stop being so hyper sensitive and inconsistent.

On one hand, we begrudgingly support the Westboro Church when they poke fun at dead soldiers, while we simultaneously vilify a politician or celebrity who uses ONE nasty word that's on the liberal do-not-speak-if-you're-a-white-male list.

It's disingenuous at the very least.

Call a spade a spade. If someone is an azzwipe, let's say it. If they're a good person who let slip an inappropriate term, discuss it and move on.

In other words, Get Over Yourselves.
Whatever happened to sticks and stones?

Which part didn't you understand?
I'm serious.
The words "happy holidays" are not the issue.
It's the REASON behind them.
I don't know why that's so hard to comprehend.

In the meantime, it is kinda funny.
