Without looking it up...

What instrument were the Doors lacking? A typical rock group of the time had 4: lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and drums. But the Doors only had 4 members, and Morrison only sang.

What were they missing (yet the music had a full enough sound)?

They didn't have a bass player.
