Solid.

My latest drams:

FR Elliott's Select
Laphroaig 10
WT Master's Keep
Elmer T Lee

I believe those are the only four whiskies I've had so far this year.

And I can't figure out which difference you're referring to!

Blanton's is expensive and OGD/BH are relatively cheap.

Blanton's is a lower rye mashbill than OGD/BH but is BT's High Rye mash.

OGD/BH are Beam Suntory and Blantons is BT?

OGD and BH are 80 proof and Blantons is 93?

IS BLANTONS EVEN THE NOT LIKE ONE?!?! HALP

i enjoy ryes

but i buy the ogd for mixing with warm cider for fall parties

usually drink scotch and bourbon neat
ogd is just not my preference neat - even gave it two 3 finger chances
i have heard there is a "bonded" version that is pretty nice but i do not believe my run of the mill 80proof was that

but thanks for the history lesson :)

I popped a bottle of OF 1920 last night...absolutely incredible bourbon.

Elliott's is good but not mind blowing to me. More dry and savory than I expect for 4R.

Four Roses makes some of the best bourbon I have ever had bar none..........based on barrel select bottles from Maisano's.That being said,of their shelf whiskey I prefer their small batch to their single barrel.Personally I think their best barrels are being sold off to the highest bidder.

I know right? I haven't really been paying close attention to bourbon for more than 2-3 years. I found an email from Xmas 2015 where if you bought 4 bottles of Four Roses Private Barrels, they were $30 each. I bought 4. I found another one from a few months before that where they were $35 with no limit. As recent as 6 months ago I paid $45 on sale. Regular price now is as low as $52 at one place but most are at $65.

Now all the stores are saying the private barrel program has been much more selective and they won't get as many barrels so they're not on sale. F#$%

Let alone the price hikes on everything else =( Forget about limited releases. Paid $25 for Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit on sale previously. Never on sale now and always $50. Same with Russell's Reserve Single Barrel.

Smooth Ambler discontinued their barrel program. Bought the ryes for like $50 a bottle a year or two ago. Now they sell for $200+ on the secondary market. Used to pay $40 for the old scout bourbon store picks. I bought out the remaining stock in Big Red Liquors at $60 a bottle the other day when they discontinued this program as well.

I didn't partake in the Cigar Boom of the 90s, but I sure remember Beanie Babies ;D

WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END?

Yeah selection as of late has been poor locally, and the prices are stupid. When it's close to scotch, I buy scotch.

Or I say FU and get rum.

So I want to pick up a bottle of rye. I'm thinking angels envy. Any other suggestions in the $80 to $90 price range. Perhaps whistle pig? I like 95% to 100% rye. I don't know rye to well. Thanks.

Sazerac.......$25 and a helluva lot better than those selling for 3-4 times as much.

Sazerac 18.......not sure of the price but it's worth it.

Hard to believe of all the price hikes this magnificent Kentucky concoction can still be had for under 30 bones.

I do believe you've made my mind up as to my pour tonite.

If you've never had the Angel's Envy Rye I strongly suggest trying before buying. As the Rye is finished in wine casks or whatever like their bourbon it really picks up that flavor and tasted to me very much like a super sweet desert liquor. I would say its like a ****tier High West Midwinter Night's Dram. Where as I like the HWMWND a lot, I did not enjoy the AE Rye at all.

Other good ryes:

Rittenhouse BIB - Good for sipping neat or making cocktails at 100 proof. Good spice

MGP Rye - Smooth Ambler Old Scout (these are starting to be worth a fortune if you can find them), Willett, Redemption, Templeton, Bulleitt Rye, all the other Diageo Ryes are MGP (dickel and more) so many others somewhere Sku's Recent Eats Blog has a list of all MGP buying NDPs.

Of the MGP ryes I really like redemption, willett, and SAOS the best although some SAOS has a strong dill flavor.

http://recenteats.blogspot.com/2014/05/how-do-you-know-its-sourced-whiskey.html

http://recenteats.blogspot.com/p/the-complete-list-of-american-whiskey.html#IN

FEW Spirits Rye was a good craft Rye. The Willett 2-3 years old was a good craft rye as well (distilled by them). Considering they are craft...

HW sources from MGP, sourced from Barton, and maybe sources from others as well. I like all of High West rye products. Can find the Double Rye on sale for 27.99 sometimes.

Also as already stated the buffalo trace ryes kick ass.

Thomas H Handy, new Sazerac 18, and Sazerac 6yo or Baby Saz or just Sazerac are all one mash bill.

EH Taylor Rye is expensive but good. Its a different BT recipe than the above.

Old Sazerac 18 and lolVanWinkle Family Reserve Rye (which was a 19yo rye until they used the last this year) are unique and will be extremely pricey. I've traded for samples online and had in bars for 20-30 bucks but 2ndary market on a bottle is like 500 for Saz to 800+ for VW now.

If you didn't pick something, remind me when I get back in town next week. I may be able to assist you in determining what ryes you like before you buy.

If you're serious about getting one it was $150 at Xmas during the big red liquors pappy fest. I said earlier but I'm still kicing myself in the ass for not buying it was delicious.

I will definitely get one next year. Say the word and remind me when its time and I'll get one for you as well C+S.
