Self Checkouts Sometimes Are Nice

I had to buy all new windows for one of my houses this weekend and of course the lines were a mile long at the registers. So I look over at the self-check lanes and they are wide open so I reluctantly go over to them. I scan the first 8 windows all goes fine but of course the last 2 will not scan. So now I'm waiting for a head cashier to come over and help me out and of course that takes 15 minutes to get her there. I explain the problem and she tries to scan one and has no luck then she starts typing a bunch of crap in the register. I'm watching her so I can see what she is doing so I don't get over charged and before I know it she says to me OK it's all taken care of and gives me my total. My wife steps up and pays and we load the truck up and start driving home and all of a sudden my wife starts laughing I ask her what's so funny and she tells me we got the 2 windows free. So sometimes I guess it pays to go through those self-check lanes.

Sounds like they had a buy four get one free sale going on.

My wife and I went to get some new cushions for our patio set. We needed six cushions so I just grabbed a box of six. I wasn't paying attention to what the cashier was doing and just paid the bill. When we got outside and I was checking the receipt she only charged us for one cushion. Packed up the car and went home.

Andy - I guess you can look at it that way or you can call severance pay for me having to do my own checkout. As far as I'm concerned teach your people how to operate your equipment and you wouldn't have losses.

^ And/Or teach them Patients...

in my case.. I was almost all checked out, and had people behind me.. when she couldn't get the produce button to accept the bananna's and weight.. she just said F'it and set them in my cart with a smile...

she didn't want to have to clear and rescan all my grocries I guess?

matter fact that was the last time I used one of those self checker machines because of that incident.. I avoid them as incomputent components..

The funny thing is the cashiers don't "get it" with those devices. If those things work great they the cashiers will have no jobs I tried to explain that to one of the ladies once and she couldn't grasp what I meant so I gave up.

I like to use the self checkout because it's usually faster at the grocery store. One lane at our local commissary has the bagging conveyer attached so you can bag your own, it's a 40 item or over self check lane.

One time I was using it and it scanned the 24 pack of Charmin bathroom tissue but told me the weight wasn't right and it backed it off the bill automatically. After three tries and three failures, I just tossed it over the conveyor into the bagging area. Do I feel guilty? Yes I do. and I punish myself every time it happens.

IMO you should get a few items for free. What the hell is the point in using the self checks if you get no discounts or specials? You are saving them money as well by not using an employee to check you out. Give me an incentive to use it. But not quicker check out. That's there issue with cust service. My favorite part is where they allow you to use a credit card but then someone has to come by to verify you and the card match. There goes self check.

I completely stopped shopping at HomeDepot because I hate the self check-out there.

Agree with Fenster. You should go back and pay for the 2 windows. But it sounds like you think you are "entitled" to the 2 windows for your trouble. Problem with your logic is, you chose to use the self checkout line. Just because there was technical difficulties with equipment, it does NOT entitle you to 2 free windows.

I really don't think I'm "entitled" to them, but I do think I'm "entitled" to a speedy checkout with capable employees. I also think I'm "entitled" to not be inconvenienced for an error that I had nothing to do with. So long story short it's going to be a bank repo with two free windows and a lot of sleepless nights dealing with my guilt.

I do all my checkouts by telepathy....You wouldn't believe the money I save. They even have these noise makers when I walk through the doors.....these make me so happy I run to my car with store employees behind me cheering me on.

A lot of stores have a policy that if they have self-check lanes and the item doesn't scan, then the item is free.

Since it was the head checker, and not a trainee, I wouldn't pay for anything because he/she should've known the system well enough to accurately determine the price of the item.

#15 Your wife must think you are then. Because she knew you weren't being charged for them, and didn't speak up. There is NO such thing as a free lunch, or windows. Someone pays for it. In this case, it will be Home Depot. But they are a business, they can afford it right?

And then you come on here and brag that you/wife stole 2 windows. LOL

Like I said lots of sleepless nights ahead and if you would have read I said my wife noticed it on the way home.(Explanation for those of you that are a little slow that means we were in the truck about 15 miles away from the store when she looked at the receipt.)

Last week, after a very trying day of shopping, we hit Texas Roadhouse for some chow.

I ordered a tall Sam Adams right off the bat and took a good long pull. I didn't think anything of it, but I felt some sort of deformity with my lips. My mind told me that it was probably ice from the frosted mug.

A moment later, as the waitress was taken our orders, I looked at glass and noticed a crack extended from the rim, straight down the side a couple inches.

It was then that I committed a sin by taking another long pull. The waitress asked me for my order and I said, "Hang on a second" and took another long pull (it was a 22oz beer).

I put the beer down......now 3/4 empty and pointed out the crack.

She apologized and assured me she'd replace it......then sort of laughed and asked if I wanted another sip before she took it away.....so I finished it.

It was in this manner that I stole a beer.

Now why you would come on a Cigar Board and admit to stealing two windows is beyond me. You admitted to standing over her while she rung it up to make sure you didn't get over charged, so you must of seen her not charge you.
The word of the day is Integrity. You either have it or you don't. You obviously Do Not.
And in case you don't know what that is, it is doing the right thing, because it is the right thing. Even when no one is watching.
But again, why you would come on here and brag about it is beyond me.

Not to shift the topic, but the grocery store we use has self-checkout lanes.

This is fine, but some evenings (midnight) they stop staffing all checkouts, and just set one employee to oversee the 4 self-checkout lanes.

This is a HORRIBLE policy. Because we roll up there with a cart full of groceries, and it takes us forever to check out. We can't scan an item once and then multiply, no, we have to scan every damn thing. And the area where you stack the groceries is not large enough, so when we remove items to stack them elsewhere it starts beeping.

The clerk has to come to our station multiple times.

^1, 6, 18 - (I'm hopefully assuming that 10 is tongue-in-cheek).....Wow - just wow.

IMO, it is exactly this sense of entitlement that is a major factor in steering our great nation into difficult times. At least in Hog's case he tried to work with the store and a store rep made a conscious decision to let it go (understandable since the value of the bananas probably wasn't worth either their time or the customer's frustration.)

But knowingly going home with two windows that you didn't pay for? Just blows my mind that anyone can consider that acceptable.

A little checking found this:

http://phoenix.about.com/library/weekly/aa111901a.htm

With 20 Compliance Officers to regulate all Arizona retailers, the Department relies heavily on consumers to be their eyes and ears in the marketplace. The Department of Weights & Measures advises consumers to do the following every time they shop:

1. Bring ads with you.
2. Write down prices. By law, retailers are required, upon your request, to provide you with a pen so you can write down prices.
3. Watch the cash register display at the check out counter.
4. Speak up when a scanning error occurs.
5. When you catch a scanning error, ask for the store’s written policy regarding errors in pricing. All retailers are required to have a written policy available to their customers upon request. *****Some retailers have policies that state items are to be given to customers at no charge if an item scans incorrectly.*****
6. Check your receipt before you leave the store.
7. Call the Department at (602) 255-5211 if a scanning error isn't fixed to your satisfaction
================================================

Note the asterisked area in #5.

See the "no charge" reference? Thats what the "head clerk" gave Cousin Eddie, the windows at no charge.

Maybe some of you should get off your high horses, and start living in the real world. If the store has a policy, who am I to not hold them accountable for their policies?

It wasn't "stealing". He went throught he register, and they couldn't scan the code. They handed him the window, and the receipt, and let him leave the store...
I've checked, THAT AIN'T STEALING where I come from.
